The Organization: What is the Chamber of Commerce?

The San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce is the oldest and largest voluntary organization in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. As an independent nonprofit corporation (not affiliated with government or any other agency), we uniquely serve the needs of our 1,400 members.

For more than 107 years, we've been dedicated to a single goal: enhancing the economic health of the San Luis Obispo area and the prosperity of our members.

Our philosophy is simple. We believe more business is good for existing business, an attractive and viable city attracts more business activity, and this additional activity benefits every business person and resident.

We succeed thanks to active, motivated volunteer business leaders supported by a highly regarded professional staff. This potent combination does what no service club, government agency nor individual business could accomplish alone: enhance and promote San Luis Obispo as a place to do business and enjoy life.

Economic Vision Document

The San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce released its latest economic vision for San Luis Obispo's future in January 2010 to help guide the city out of the economic downturn.

By looking to a time when business is again expanding, the Chamber developed strategies to ensure San Luis Obispo is poised to take advantage of coming economic opportunities.

In its third major revision since 1992, the Chamber’s vision of San Luis Obispo’s economic future features long-term objectives, core values and economic principles, and a six-point economic strategy for the future.

The document was officially released at the Chamber’s Annual Dinner gala on Jan. 23, 2010.

Chamber Structure

The Board of Directors serves as the Chamber's policy-making body. Its members represent the business and professional leadership of the community. The Board consists of 21 members. Eight are elected one year and eight are elected the next year for two year terms each. One is a designated member and one is appointed by the Chair of the Board. The Chair of the Board presides over all meetings of the Board. The Executive Committee exercises the powers of the Board between those times when Board meetings are held.

The Executive Committee consists of the Chair of the Board, Treasurer, Board Counsel, Past Chairman of the Board and Vice Chairs of the three main divisions of the Chamber. The committees of the Chamber harness the energies and abilities of our volunteer workers. Committees are responsible to the Board of Directors and report to the Board. Committee action is advisory only and does not become Chamber policy without Board approval.
