Of water and wine

Turning water into wine is certainly a miracle. But producing high-quality wine while conserving water is remarkable as well. That’s what Jean Pierre Wolff and family do at Wolff Vineyards, a winner of the inaugural San Luis Obispo Green Awards. Wolff will talk about his conservation efforts and how others can learn from what the winery has done.

Round two as No. 2

A few months ago, Bob Koob returned to Cal Poly, adding provost to the title of vice president for academic affairs, which he also held from 1990-1995. He left Cal Poly to become president of University of Northern Iowa, his alma mater, where he achieved substantial increases in the endowment, enrollment, federal support and scholarships. Koob will speak about how Cal Poly has played a role in San Luis Obispo's economic development.

The T-what?

Local hotelier, John Connor, chairs the board of the new Tourism Business Improvement District. The T-BID, as it’s known allows the city’s hotel industry to collect a special tax to use solely for tourism marketing. Conner, head of the T-BID committee, will explain the progress so far and how the money will be spent.

Chamber goals for 2009

Tom Lebens first served on the SLO Chamber Board of Directors when he was student body president at Cal Poly. Now he’s been elected to chair the board. Lebens, an intellectual property lawyer at Sinsheimer Juhnke Lebens & McIvor, will talk about the Chamber’s goals for 2009, which include working more closely with Cal Poly to foster economic development, especially in the technology industry. Lebens will be installed at the Chamber’s 104th annual dinner Jan. 24.

A local perspective on the Inauguration

Barack Obama will be sworn in as President of the United States on Tuesday. John Shoals – the first elected mayor of Grover Beach – will talk at Good Morning SLO about what Obama’s election and presidency mean to him, as an African-American, as well as to all of us. He’ll bring a personal and local perspective to this historic occasion.

Looking for advice dealing with today’s economic realities?

Don Maruska is accustomed to tackling huge obstacles. His Morro Bay consulting company helps firms solve million-dollar-a-day manufacturing problems, Fortune 500 companies launch new projects and government agencies deal with multi-million dollar deficits. Today’s economy is definitely a big obstacle, and Maruska will share his advice on strategies to respond and even thrive.

We’re gonna pep you up!

Our entertainment for the morning will come from 20 members of the Mustang Band, the “Pride of the Pacific,” which plays at Cal Poly’s athletic events. In the fall, the Mustang Marching Band plays at pep rallies, parades and football games. In the winter, they become the Mustang Stadium Band for basketball season and alumni events. In the spring, the Pep Band entertains during the university’s Open House and other events. It’s sure be an energetic start to the day!
