Point-Counterpoint: Prado Road initiative

Residents may be voting in November on a local citizens' initiative, designed to thwart the city’s plan to extend Prado Road to connect South Higuera and Broad streets. Prado Road has long been planned to be an important arterial road connecting future areas for development in the southern part of the city. Come hear Mila Vujovich-La Barre, one of the initiative’s backers, share why she believes the road extension should be prevented. Mayor Dave Romero will explain why he believes the road alignment is necessary. Weigh in on this important issue.

A hands-on approach to business

Which hand gestures can make or break a sale? What does your handshake say about you?  A person’s intentions, motives and concerns can be conveyed in a single, slight movement, and if you know what to look for, you can gain the upper hand. Hear Rich Ferguson, an expert in body language and sleight of hand, shed light on the science of hands. He will provide us with tips on what not to do with our hands and what to look for when doing business.

From fun camping trip to disaster:
could it happen here?

Summer is here and the time is right for camping. But the tragic Arkansas flood that killed 20 campers earlier this month has sparked questions about what local officials are doing to ensure the safety of our county parks and recreational areas. Hear State Parks Coastal Sector Superintendent Juventino Ortiz III talk about the emergency response management partnership State Parks has within San Luis Obispo County as well as some information we need to know about emergency management systems in general.

Local honored as state’s top AmeriCorps volunteer

A Cal Poly employee was recently named California’s inaugural AmeriCorps Member of the Year by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver. Megan Mastache was honored with the award for demonstrating AmeriCorps values, making a significant contribution to the community and committing herself to a lifetime of service. Hear about how Mastache got involved with AmeriCorps, her experiences as a local volunteer and what the award means to her.

Local schools: Will excellence continue?

San Luis Obispo's schools are progressive, safe and possess excellent faculty and programs but there are both political and financial threats that may change this. Dr. Edward Valentine, superintendent of San Luis Coastal Unified School District, is retiring in July after five years as superintendent and 13 years working with the school district. He will reflect on his career and tell us what the community should watch out for.

A blend of rock, blues, soul and country

San Luis Obispo County’s The JD Project has a style of music that is all its own, with a driving blend of rock, blues, soul and country that provides a pulse for any atmosphere. This local band has maintained San Luis Obispo County as its home base and is comprised of former members from San Luis Obispo’s national touring band Itchy McGuirk. Hear a sneak preview of its July 2 Concerts in the Plaza show.
