SUMMARY:Cal Poly hosts Talk on Diversity and Excellence in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Ochoa is the recipient of Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts Susan Currier Visiting Professorship for Teaching Excellence for winter quarter 2016. She is teaching two courses in the Ethnic Studies Department\, “Cultural Production and Ethnicity” and “Chicana/o-Latinas/os and Education.” Her April 7 lecture will be the culmination of her time on campus. \nHer talk will use lessons from her extensive study of high school students and her experiences at Cal Poly to explore how seemingly well-intended movements for diversity and celebrations of academic excellence can maintain the status quo and reproduce inequality in institutions of higher education. \nOchoa will discuss discrepancies between what individuals and institutions say and do to enhance diversity\, inclusivity and equity. By exposing and exploring those gaps\, her talk will highlight areas for individual and institutional transformation.

SUMMARY:Noah Gundersen @The Fremont Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Noah Gundersen is an American indie folk singer-songwriter from Seattle\, Washington\, and founder of the band The Courage. \nFor Noah Gundersen\, the past few years have brought about immense growth and change\, both as an artist and as a young man grappling with issues of identity and independence. It should come as little surprise\, then\, that his stunning new album\, ‘Carry The Ghost\,’ is so heavily influenced by existential philosophy. What’s so striking\, though\, is hearing a 25-year-old articulate such weighty themes\, packaging them into heartbreakingly gorgeous melodies with a plainspoken language that cuts to the quick upon first listen. Then again\, Noah Gundersen has never aimed for ordinary.

SUMMARY:SLO Little Theatre presents Sam Shepard's True West
DESCRIPTION:Performances of TRUE WEST run April 1-17\, 2016\, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm and Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 pm. A 1983 comedy/drama is considered a classic of modern American theater\n A tale of two brothers\, a movie script and a meltdown of hilarious and terrifying proportions. . All performances take place at the SLO Little Theatre\, 888 Morro Street in San Luis Obispo. Tickets at slolittletheatre.org or call (805) 786-2440. \nABOUT THE SHOW\nBrothers Austin and Lee are about as opposite as they come. Austin is a clean-cut\, responsible screenwriter living the safe suburban lifestyle. Lee is a reckless\, poorly groomed drunk who steals household appliances. After five years without seeing one another\, they cross paths in their mother’s home just outside of Los Angeles. Austin is housesitting and Lee has come to raid the neighborhood. The resulting epic meltdown is both hilarious and terrifying. Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for drama\, the play is often considered to be Sam Shepard’s masterwork. \nAccording to playwright Sam Shepard: “I wanted to write a play about double nature\, one that wouldn’t be symbolic or metaphorical or any of that stuff. I just wanted to give a taste of what it feels like to be two-sided. It’s a real thing\, double nature. I think we’re split in a much more devastating way than psychology can ever reveal. It’s not so cute. Not some little thing we can get over. It’s something we’ve got to live with.” \nThe Little Theatre’s production is directed by Mark Sitko and features the talents of Mike Fiore as Lee\, Marcus DiMaggio as Austin\, Tony Taylor as Saul and Sue Miers as Mom. Many thanks to generous show sponsors Catherine and Richard Luckett and Maryellen and Michael Simkins. \nFor more information about the San Luis Obispo Little Theatre or True West\, please visit or contact Patty Thayer\, Communications and Development Director\, at (805) 781-3889\, ext. 15 or pattythayer@slolittletheatre.org.
