SUMMARY:ARTful Learning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:FIRED UP: HANDBUILDING CERAMICS \nOCT 21 – OCT 23 \nOVERVIEW // This three-day workshop will cover the techniques of hand-building with clay using coil and slab construction in a working ceramics studio. Students will learn the composition of the material and its working properties. The focus of projects will be directed towards functional objects like vessels and pottery. Demonstrations and finished examples will be shown for reference. Discussion may additionally include topics related to aesthetics\, artistic intention\, and personal experience.  \nWorkshop takes place in Trent Burkett’s City Art Plant Studio in Arroyo Grande. Students will glaze and fire their pieces after the workshop’s conclusion. Open to all levels of experience\, ages 16 and up. Students should bring a notebook and wear clothes that are suitable for class (closed toed shoes and aprons recommended).  \nAbout the instructor: Trent Burkett is an artist working across multiple disciplines from mixed media sculpture to functional ceramics and public art. He is former Full Professor of Ceramics and Sculpture and Chair of the Department of Visual Art at University of the Pacific in Stockton\, CA. Mr. Burkett started teaching at Pacific in 2000 and retired from the academic setting in 2014 to focus on his professional art practice and to continue to teach privately through his business\, City Art Plant Studio.  \nIn 2014\, Mr. Burkett’s ceramic work was awarded Third Prize in SLOMA’s 2014 “Dimensions” exhibition of fine craft by juror Carol Sauvion of Free Hand Gallery and the award-winning PBS series\, “Craft in America.” His sculptural and ceramic work will be featured in a solo exhibition at SLOMA’s Gray Wing August 5 – October 2\, 2016. \nDETAILS // $250 members\, $275 general. All materials\, including tool use\, clay\, glazing\, and firing are included with registration.\nOctober 21 – 23\, 2016. 9 am – 4 pm with breaks.  \nIn consideration of our instructors\, please review our cancelation policy: A $100 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of enrollment. The balance is required 30 days prior to the workshop date to ensure your space\, after which there are NO REFUNDS. If a class is cancelled by the Museum of Art\, the entire enrollment fee will be refunded.
