SUMMARY:Studios on the Park Gallery Show: Masquerade
DESCRIPTION:Ah the festival\, the celebration and all the people so happy\, pretending to be what they imagine. The mystics said that life is an illusion. And artist uses techniques of illusion\, such as colors\, lines and forms to turn 2D art into what appears to be 3D and that makes for an interesting work of art. PRAA artists could represent a festival or celebration or deceive us.” See how the artists responded. \nThe theme of each show is broad and open to artist’s interpretation. The fundamental elements of fine art are looked for across all mediums: i.e.\, visual components of color\, form\, line\, shape\, space\, texture\, and value.\nCan the artwork evoke a connection with you?

SUMMARY:Ralph Bacerra: Exquisite Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Collectors and viewers alike will relish this rare opportunity to view and acquire Ralph Bacerra artworks at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art from February 3\, 2017 until April 2\, 2017.\nRalph Bacerra (1938–2008) was a Los Angeles–based ceramics artist known for creating meticulous ceramic vessels and sculptures adorned with complex patterns and mesmerizing color. Jo Lauria\, a noted independent arts curator and author who specializes in decorative arts\, crafts\, and design\, was Bacerra’s student. Inspired by the undisputed master of surface decoration in ceramics\, Jo Lauria curated Exquisite Beauty for Otis College of Art and Design Ben Matz Gallery. SLOMA is honored to exhibit selections from this magnificent collection of art. \nBacerra had a profound influence on the ceramic art world. Minimalism and abstraction ruled the trends of the day; decoration and china painting were looked down upon. Bacerra challenged current conventions by combining Asian decorative ceramic traditions with boundary-pushing elements like aggregated design motifs and optical inventions. He utilized labor-intensive finishes to produce incredibly opulent artworks. This new\, unique visual vocabulary transformed a formerly “low” or minor technique into “high” art. The art world owes a debt of gratitude to Bacerra for the intense\, luxurious colors and patterns he unabashedly embraced. \nBacerra served as the head of ceramics at Chouinard from 1964 through 1971\, and then worked as a studio artist for ten years. He began teaching at Otis Art Institute in 1982. Appointed chair of ceramics in 1983 – 1996\, he shared an admirable camaraderie with his students. They learned by witnessing his perfectionistic process\, while sharing dialogue about glazing techniques\, ceramic material properties\, and critiques. Today\, many of Bacerra’s former students are prominent artists. \nThe San Luis Obispo Museum of Art\, dedicated to the education\, presentation and preservation of the visual arts on the Central Coast\, is located at 1010 Broad Street\, on the west end of Mission Plaza. Free admission\, donations are appreciated. For more info visit SLOMA.org.

SUMMARY:Hilarious Comedy "The Foreigner" Returns to The Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:One of the funniest comedies of the 20th Century\, The Foreigner\, makes its return to The Great American Melodrama this month. The play\, written by Larry Shue\, was previously produced by the theatre a decade ago and remains one of its most requested titles. Featuring some of the Central Coast’s favorite actors\, and talented guest artists from across the country\, the show promises to be a crowd-pleaser.\nThe Foreigner features a plot guaranteed to bring the laughs. Shy Englishman Charlie Baker (Billy Breed) just needs to get away from it all. He finds himself in a rural Georgia fishing lodge run by Betty Meeks (Suzy Newman)\, and occupied by the local pastor (Jeff Salsbury)\, his fiancé (Eleise Moore)\, and her brother (Toby Tropper). Soon everyone comes to believe that Charlie can’t speak English. What could possibly go wrong? Well soon Charlie overhears some deep secrets and diabolical plans\, and that’s when the hilarity begins. Rounding out the cast are Lawrence Lesher and Melodrama newcomer Matt Katzenmeier. Artistic Directer Dan Schultz helms the production.\nFollowing each performance of The Foreigner is the Melodrama’s hilarious vaudeville revue\, The Library Vaudeville Revue. This side-splitting half hour examines all things book-related. From boy wizards to book clubs\, nothing is off limits — the show is sure to be a best seller. Full of comedy and song\, The Library Vaudeville is written and directed by PCPA’s Matt Koenig.\nThe Foreigner and The Library Vaudeville Revue perform January 19 through March 5. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm\, Saturdays at 3 and 7 pm\, and Sundays at 6 pm.
