SUMMARY:Hilarious Comedy "The Foreigner" Returns to The Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:One of the funniest comedies of the 20th Century\, The Foreigner\, makes its return to The Great American Melodrama this month. The play\, written by Larry Shue\, was previously produced by the theatre a decade ago and remains one of its most requested titles. Featuring some of the Central Coast’s favorite actors\, and talented guest artists from across the country\, the show promises to be a crowd-pleaser.\nThe Foreigner features a plot guaranteed to bring the laughs. Shy Englishman Charlie Baker (Billy Breed) just needs to get away from it all. He finds himself in a rural Georgia fishing lodge run by Betty Meeks (Suzy Newman)\, and occupied by the local pastor (Jeff Salsbury)\, his fiancé (Eleise Moore)\, and her brother (Toby Tropper). Soon everyone comes to believe that Charlie can’t speak English. What could possibly go wrong? Well soon Charlie overhears some deep secrets and diabolical plans\, and that’s when the hilarity begins. Rounding out the cast are Lawrence Lesher and Melodrama newcomer Matt Katzenmeier. Artistic Directer Dan Schultz helms the production.\nFollowing each performance of The Foreigner is the Melodrama’s hilarious vaudeville revue\, The Library Vaudeville Revue. This side-splitting half hour examines all things book-related. From boy wizards to book clubs\, nothing is off limits — the show is sure to be a best seller. Full of comedy and song\, The Library Vaudeville is written and directed by PCPA’s Matt Koenig.\nThe Foreigner and The Library Vaudeville Revue perform January 19 through March 5. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm\, Saturdays at 3 and 7 pm\, and Sundays at 6 pm. The Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $20 to $27\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. Season passes are also available. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.

SUMMARY:Paula Poundstone @ the Fremont Theater
DESCRIPTION:Heralded as one of our country’s foremost comics\, Paula Poundstone’s quick-thinking\, unscripted approach to comedy makes for a perfect fit as a regular panelist on NPR’s #1 show\, the screwball weekly news quiz show\, “WAIT WAIT…DON’T TELL ME!\,” where she holds the record for game losses. “The others cheat\,” she says magnanimously\, “you wouldn’t think NPR would put up with that.” \nPaula tours regularly\, performing standup comedy across the country. Writes Nick Zaino with the Boston Globe: “You know she’s a great comic the way you know any fine performer when you see one – there’s a disarming ease in her craft\, an immediate sense that she’s so quick on her feet you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong… Paula’s interchanges with the audience are never mean or done at a person’s expense.” \nAges 13+

SUMMARY:PAULA POUNDSTONE
DESCRIPTION:Heralded as one of our country’s foremost comics\, Paula Poundstone’s quick-thinking\, unscripted approach to comedy makes for a perfect fit as a regular panelist on NPR’s #1 show\, the screwball weekly news quiz show\, “WAIT WAIT…DON’T TELL ME!\,” where she holds the record for game losses. “The others cheat\,” she says magnanimously\, “you wouldn’t think NPR would put up with that.” \nPaula tours regularly\, performing standup comedy across the country. Writes Nick Zaino with the Boston Globe: “You know she’s a great comic the way you know any fine performer when you see one – there’s a disarming ease in her craft\, an immediate sense that she’s so quick on her feet you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong… Paula’s interchanges with the audience are never mean or done at a person’s expense.” \nCo-presented by Cal Poly Arts and Otter Productions\, Inc.
