DESCRIPTION:The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art presents Six Squared\, an exhibition of traditional print media by the Central Coast Printmakers on view in the McMeen Gallery from April 7 – May 28\, 2017. There will be an opening reception for the exhibition from 6 – 9 PM on Friday\, April 7 in conjunction with Art After Dark.\nArtists were invited to create three 6 x 6 inch hand-pulled prints grouped in cohesive images that relate by color\, printmaking method\, and/or subject matter. These newly created\, never-before exhibited artworks include a variety of traditional printmaking media. According to Ruta Saliklis\, Director of Exhibitions at San Luis Obispo Museum of Art\, the exhibition showcases the significance of printmaking as a medium in today’s culture. The prints in this exhibition\, chosen from the talented Central Coast Printmakers\, demonstrate the range and expression available to artists today.\nThe San Luis Obispo Museum of Art\, dedicated to the education\, presentation and preservation of the visual arts on the Central Coast\, is located at 1010 Broad Street\, on the west end of Mission Plaza. SUMMARY:Muslim Scholar Dalia Mogahed to Speak at Cal Poly
DESCRIPTION:Dalia Mogahed\, a Muslim-American scholar and one of the nation’s most influential voices on Islam\, will present “Islamaphobia: A Threat to All” from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday\, April 29\, in Chumash Auditorium at Cal Poly. \nMogahed will explore the current environment for Muslim-Americans and address misconceptions about Islam. \nMogahed serves as director of research at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding and tours the globe speaking to audiences about Islam in the contemporary world. A board member of the World Economic Forum\, her analysis of the Islamic world has appeared in The Wall Street Journal\, Foreign Policy magazine\, the Harvard International Review\, the Middle East Policy Journal\, and many other journals. Former President Barack Obama appointed her to the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships in 2009.  \nAs executive director of and senior analyst for the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies\, Mogahed created the largest\, most comprehensive study of the Islamic world\, with more than 50\,000 interviews representing Muslims in more than 35 predominantly Muslim nations. The research led to a book she co-authored with John Esposito\, titled “Who Speaks For Islam?: What a Billion Muslims Really Think.”  \nHer popular “TED” talks have been viewed almost 10 million times. In 2010\, Ashoka: Innovators for the Public named Mogahed the Arab World’s Social Innovator of the Year.  \n“We look forward to Dalia Mogahed’s presentation\,” said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong. “We steadfastly support a multitude of perspectives and voices at Cal Poly and embrace all efforts to create a more inclusive campus community and increase appreciation for the many cultures and viewpoints represented at our university.” \nMogahed’s talk—sponsored in part by the university’s Muslim Student Association\, Office of University Diversity and Inclusion (OUDI)\, Cross Cultural Center\, Cal Poly Associated Students\, Inc (ASI) and Student Affairs—is free and open to the public and will be followed by a question-and-answer period.  \nThe Muslim Student Association has supported Muslim students at Cal Poly for more than 40 years. Its nearly 100 members come from across academic disciplines and from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. In this multimedia program\, she’ll discuss how her life and her musicianship transformed as she learned this notoriously difficult music. She’ll perform on the piano that belonged to Ignacy Paderewski\, who published editions of Chopin’s works and who has deep roots in Paso Robles. \nConcert will be followed by a wine reception with the artist.
