SUMMARY:Cal Poly Art Gallery to Exhibit Stössinger’s ‘Type Design’
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit will open with a talk by Stössinger\, a Swiss typeface designer\, at 4:30 p.m. Friday\, Sept. 22\, in Room 123 of the Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering Building (No. 8) on campus. A reception will follow at 5:30 p.m. in the gallery\, located on the ground floor of the Dexter Building (No. 34). \nThe exhibition traces Stössinger’s journey into typeface design\, from her first published font family through her more recent work including typeface design\, sketches and lettering. Her documented processes\, explorations and final results will be on display. They tell a story of discovering the formal language of letterforms and the myriad forms they can take. \n“Good typography is essential to good graphic design\, and we can all benefit from what Nina can teach us\,” said Bruno Ribiero\, professor of graphic design. “The appreciation for the details in typeface design improves anyone’s skills\, not only in design\, but in any craft one chooses.” \nThe University Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. \nAbout the Artist\nNina Stössinger is currently a senior typeface designer at Frere-Jones Type in Brooklyn. She previously worked as an independent typeface designer\, typographer\, graphic designer\, and tool developer in the Netherlands and in her native Switzerland. \nShe graduated with a degree in multi-media design from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art Halle/Germany\, where she discovered her love for type. She also earned a Certificate of Advanced Studies in type design from Zurich University of the Arts and a Master of Arts in type and media from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. \nStössinger teaches type design at Yale School of Art\, serves on the board of directors of the Type Directors Club\, and has spoken at numerous international events and conferences. Her work has been awarded the Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Club\, the Certificate of Excellence from the International Society of Typographic Designers\, the iF communication design award\, the Award of Excellence from Communication Arts and more. After being featured in group shows across three continents\, this is Stössinger’s first solo exhibition.

Held on the fourth Thursday of each month\, local experts focus on a wide variety of community and business topics. Deadline to register is 5:00 p.m. September 26. \nThis month’s topics: \nWITH THIS APPRENTICE\, YOU’RE NOT FIRED\, YOU’RE HIRED \n\nApprenticeships are being hailed as a promising new strategy for technology companies struggling to find qualified workers. Locally\, the new SLO Partners program aims to open the door to people without a tech background and help companies find employees with desired certifications. Jackie Goeppner is one of the first round of participants\, and we invited her to share more about the program and her personal experience.\nARE WE DISASTER READY? \n\nFires\, floods\, hurricanes and earthquakes – calamity seems to be spreading all over in recent weeks. County Emergency Services Director Ron Alsop will address the region’s state of readiness\, lessons learned from recent disasters and what businesses and households should consider before it’s too late.\nA CLEAN START \n\nSomething as simple as a shower and clean clothes can boost health\, hygiene and dignity among the homeless\, but opportunities can be few and far between. Showers of Hope is hoping to change that with a new mobile shower trailer making its way around San Luis Obispo. Volunteer coordinator Tim Waag will talk about the program’s origins  and progress and share stories of the people getting a fresh start.\nREFLECTIONS FROM THE SLO CITY TRENCHES \n\n\nSLO City Manager Katie Lichtig has shepherded the city through many volatile issues in her seven-year tenure\, from increasing housing and improving infrastructure to recovering from a tough recession and negotiating early stages of Diablo Canyon’s closure. As she departs for a new job in Santa Monica\, we invited Lichtig to say farewell and share what she’ll take away from her time here. \nTHE BUZZ ON CIDER \n\nCider\, an age-old beverage especially popular in the United Kingdom\, is cropping up among the area’s wineries\, breweries and spirits-makers\, giving drinkers yet another option for locally produced libations. Connor Meznarich\, half the duo behind Jean Marie Cidery\, will talk about what’s behind cider’s resurgence and how it complements to the area’s wine country.\nLIFE UNDER DACA \n\nMatias Bernal is a busy member of the community\, juggling a demanding job combatting sexual and intimate partner violence as client services director at the nonprofit RISE with studies toward a PhD and JD. He also lives under the uncertain future of DACA\, his work and residence status as risk of being rescinded. We invited Bernal to share his story and what it’s like to face a future in the balance.\nMADAMA BUTTERFLY TAKES FLIGHT \n\nOpera San Luis Obispo is readying for its annual Citywide Arts Collaboration\, a production of the tragic but beloved Madama Butterfly\, with Puccini’s soaring arias\, elaborate sets\, period costumes and stirring ballet. SUMMARY:Vina Robles: The Shins with special guest Day Wave
DESCRIPTION:The Shins will perform live at the Vina Robles Amphitheatre on September 28 in support of their latest release Heartworms (Aural Apothecary/Columbia Records) with special guests\, Day Wave opening the show. \nProduced by James Mercer\, The Shins’ fifth album\, Heartworms\, was released March 10 to a wave of critical acclaim: Entertainment Weekly called Heartworms the “band’s boldest album yet” and “a rewarding and singular addition to the Shins’ catalog\,” Rolling Stone lauded its “home-brewed feel\, heavy on Beach Boys grandeur\, New Wave kicks\, squiggly synth-pop and warm-weather soft rock – with lyrics tenderly balanced between midlife malaise and youthful romanticism. The result is some of the most charming music he’s ever made\,” while Time magazine opined “Heartworms works on a grander scale\, with ornate sonic tableaux.” \nMercer and crew celebrated the release of Heartworms by launching a competition to win the band’s original touring vehicle\, a 1990 Ford 350 Clubwagon which they newly refurbished and in which they gave Stephen Colbert a ride after their Late Show appearance. \nThe Shinsworld tour will include Mercer\, who is joined by Yuuki Matthews (bass)\, Jon Sortland (drums)\, Mark Watrous (guitar\, keys\, vocals)\, Casey Foubert (guitar) and Patti King (keys).
