SUMMARY:Cal Poly Art Gallery to Exhibit Stössinger’s ‘Type Design’
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit will open with a talk by Stössinger\, a Swiss typeface designer\, at 4:30 p.m. Friday\, Sept. 22\, in Room 123 of the Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering Building (No. 8) on campus. A reception will follow at 5:30 p.m. in the gallery\, located on the ground floor of the Dexter Building (No. 34). \nThe exhibition traces Stössinger’s journey into typeface design\, from her first published font family through her more recent work including typeface design\, sketches and lettering. Her documented processes\, explorations and final results will be on display. They tell a story of discovering the formal language of letterforms and the myriad forms they can take. \n“Good typography is essential to good graphic design\, and we can all benefit from what Nina can teach us\,” said Bruno Ribiero\, professor of graphic design. “The appreciation for the details in typeface design improves anyone’s skills\, not only in design\, but in any craft one chooses.” \nThe University Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. \nAbout the Artist\nNina Stössinger is currently a senior typeface designer at Frere-Jones Type in Brooklyn. She previously worked as an independent typeface designer\, typographer\, graphic designer\, and tool developer in the Netherlands and in her native Switzerland. \nShe graduated with a degree in multi-media design from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art Halle/Germany\, where she discovered her love for type. She also earned a Certificate of Advanced Studies in type design from Zurich University of the Arts and a Master of Arts in type and media from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. \nStössinger teaches type design at Yale School of Art\, serves on the board of directors of the Type Directors Club\, and has spoken at numerous international events and conferences. Her work has been awarded the Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Club\, the Certificate of Excellence from the International Society of Typographic Designers\, the iF communication design award\, the Award of Excellence from Communication Arts and more. After being featured in group shows across three continents\, this is Stössinger’s first solo exhibition.

SUMMARY:HBA Builder's Breakfast: "A Greener SLO through Lower Energy Use"
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\nSteph Wise\, Ten Over Studio: use of trees to lower energy usage\nEric Meyer and Eric Veium: Zero carbon homes \nBuilder Update: Halsell Builders: There’s something about being from a big family. You learn how to get along. How to do more with less. How to find the thing that makes you different. How to cram a lot of ice cream on a cone. And no one knows this better than James and Joe Halsell. James and Joe are brothers from a family of nine. Yep\, you heard that right – nine. If you’ve been on the Central Coast for any time\, you probably know the Halsell name. The family’s lived here for nearly half a century. And though James and Joe left for a while to hone their skills in the Bay Area\, they returned home in 2002 to raise their families and founded Halsell Builders. They were eager to be a part of the area’s development and to invest themselves in the community that has given them so much.

SUMMARY:Learn About the Hollister Adobe During Cuesta Faculty Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In an effort to share Cuesta College faculty expertise with fellow instructors\, staff and the community\, the college will hold a Faculty Lecture Series on October 11 about the Hollister Adobe\, which is located on the San Luis Obispo Campus. Emeritus History Instructor Dennis Judd will host the lecture\, taking place from 4:00 p.m. – 4:50 p.m. in room 6305.\nConstructed in the 1830’s as a family home\, the Hollister Adobe stands today in the southeast corner of the college campus. Originally owned by a soldier of the California Mission system\, the three-roomed adobe was later owned by the Hollister Family from 1866-1907. Cuesta College inherited the adobe in 1963. Although restoration took place in 1970\, damage caused by the December 2003 San Simeon Earthquake resulted in the closure of the adobe. Fundraising efforts are currently underway to fully restore the structure.\nEmeritus Instructor Dennis Judd taught United States history and California history at Cuesta College from 1988 until his retirement in 2015. Judd also wrote the curriculum for and taught History 260\, An Introduction to Public and Environmental History within the San Simeon Region.\nSpace is limited for the Faculty Lecture Series. Those interested in attending are encouraged to call ahead at (805) 546-3100\, ext. 2659\, or email lbaxley@cuesta.edu.
