SUMMARY:Good Morning SLO | October
DESCRIPTION:A dynamic and informative 90-minute breakfast program specifically geared to San Luis Obispo business people. Held on the fourth Thursday of each month\, local experts focus on a wide variety of community and business topics. Deadline to register is 5:00 p.m. October 24. \nONLINE ACCESSIBILITY: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW\n \nMost of us are familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act and its requirement for wheelchair ramps\, elevators and the like. Websites and apps fall under the act\, too\, though specific standards have yet to be adopted\, leaving the door open to rampant litigation. We’ve invited (iii) Design CEO Wyatt Renew to tell us what we need to know to protect against lawsuits and make our sites accessible to all. \nTHE AFTERMATH OF WINE COUNTRY WILDFIRES\n \nThe recent fires in Napa\, Sonoma and Mendocino left staggering destruction in their wake\, hitting the wine industry and those who work in it particularly hard. Tolosa Winery’s June McIvor will give us a view of the situation on the ground from the winery’s sister property in Napa and gauge the impact the fires will have on the wine industry\, including for consumers and our own wine region. \nFROM BATTLEFIELDS TO FARMFIELDS: A NEW FUTURE FOR VETS \n \nA growing movement is guiding veterans into a different kind of ground operations\, helping them transition from war to work through careers in agriculture. Morgan Boyd will share how he and brother Eric are helping combat veterans like themselves at their family farm in Arroyo Grande and through Cal Poly’s innovative agricultural training program\, F.E.E.D. \nYOUR TURN: LET’S GAB ABOUT GIVING \nAs we head into the season of giving\, we got curious: how do local businesses and institutions decide how to distribute charitable donations to support our many local nonprofits? Verdin Marketing\, for one\, has hit on a unique way to engage the community and staff in its annual 24-hour Give\, and we’ve invited Verdin’s Ashlee Akers to lead a roundtable soliciting the best ideas from your organizations. \nFOSTERING HOPE FOR KIDS IN NEED\n \nEvery month\, almost a hundred kids are helped through the foster-care services at Family Care Network. But others are turned away due to a shortage of foster parents\, leaving them in group homes or dire circumstances. Jim Roberts\, who started FCN 30 years ago\, will provide a look at the situation locally and share the challenges and rewards of the work FCN and others do in recruiting care for deserving kids. \nGET READY FOR SOME INFECTIOUS BEATS \nA few overturned buckets\, drumsticks\, maybe a trash can lid or two – that’s all the Bucket Busters need to create a rocking good time. This talented group of kids led by Music Motive Director Steve Hilstein is a fan favorite at events throughout the region\, drumming up donations for underprivileged kids to take music lessons. Be prepared for your toes to start tapping as they take the stage at Good Morning SLO.
