SUMMARY:Cal Poly to Host Talk with William P. Seeley
DESCRIPTION:William P. Seeley\, an East Coast artist and philosophy and humanities teacher\, will speak Nov. 2 at Cal Poly about his work on cognitive science and how it affects an individual’s perception of art. \nSeeley’s talk\, part of the CLA Speaks series\, will be held from 11:10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Baker Center (No. 180)\, Room 102. It is free and open to the public. \nSeeley teaches philosophy at the University of New Hampshire and humanities at Bates College. His welded steel constructions have been exhibited in New York City and at a number of colleges and university galleries\, including a solo show of outdoor works at Ezra Stiles College at Yale University. His installations as head assistant for sculptor Ursula von Rydingsvard include work currently on exhibit at the Storm King Art Center in New York and the National Gallery in Washington\, D.C. \n“Dr. Seeley works at the intersection of philosophy and artificial intelligence\,” said Cal Poly philosophy Professor Eleanor Helms. “His work also reveals the role of memory and attention in everyday perception.” \nHis work examines the concrete visual patterns that enable us to recognize and store complex narrative and cultural content\, even when viewing complex things like works of art. Seeley’s research lies at the intersection of philosophy\, art\, cognitive science and embodied cognition. He currently holds an NEH Digital Humanities Startup Grant to develop and conduct research in scientific workflows\, image analysis and visual stylometry in the digital analysis of art. \nSeeley earned a doctorate in philosophy from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York\, and a master of fine arts in sculpture from Columbia University.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department to Present ‘4000 Miles’
DESCRIPTION:The Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department will present Amy Herzog’s award-winning play “4000 Miles” as its opening show for the 2017-18 season. Performances\, held in the Spanos Theatre on campus\, will be at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday\, Nov. 2-4 and 9-11. \n“4000 Miles” was a 2013 Pulitzer Prize finalist and the winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New Play. Herzog also won the 2012 New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award. This honest and warm-hearted play is a rich study in two characters. While biking across America\, 21-year-old Leo experiences a horrific event. When he arrives in New York City\, Leo spends a month with his feisty 91-year-old grandmother\, Vera. Together\, the pair navigates a maze of heartbreak\, humor\, and healing. \nVera is played by Erma Stauffer\, a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and a lecturer in Cal Poly’s Communication Studies Department. Leo is played by Cal Poly theatre major Garrett Lamoureux. Additional cast members\, also Cal Poly theatre students\, include Gabrielle Duong\, Katryna Fogel and Jennifer McClinton. The show is directed by Al Schnupp. Guest designer Tim Dugan is designing the set\, new faculty member Brian Healy is designing lights\, costume shop manager Sarah Bryan is designing costumes\, and Clint Bryson is the technical director. \nIn a 2012 interview with Gerard Raymond\, Herzog said\, “(Vera is) based quite directly on my real biological grandmother\, who is 95 and lives still in Greenwich Village. Her name is Leepe; it’s an unusual name. She’s very sharp-tongued and quick\, very loving and also very critical\, and is just a legendary figure in my family. She actually worked in the theatre — as a production secretary and assistant — and she remains a very devoted leftist.” \nTickets are $20 for the public and $12 for students\, senior citizens and children. Tickets are available through the Performing Arts Ticket Office from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849). \nThe play is produced with the permission of Samuel French Inc.
