SUMMARY:Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department to Present ‘4000 Miles’
DESCRIPTION:The Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department will present Amy Herzog’s award-winning play “4000 Miles” as its opening show for the 2017-18 season. Performances\, held in the Spanos Theatre on campus\, will be at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday\, Nov. 2-4 and 9-11. \n“4000 Miles” was a 2013 Pulitzer Prize finalist and the winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New Play. Herzog also won the 2012 New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award. This honest and warm-hearted play is a rich study in two characters. While biking across America\, 21-year-old Leo experiences a horrific event. When he arrives in New York City\, Leo spends a month with his feisty 91-year-old grandmother\, Vera. Together\, the pair navigates a maze of heartbreak\, humor\, and healing. \nVera is played by Erma Stauffer\, a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and a lecturer in Cal Poly’s Communication Studies Department. Leo is played by Cal Poly theatre major Garrett Lamoureux. Additional cast members\, also Cal Poly theatre students\, include Gabrielle Duong\, Katryna Fogel and Jennifer McClinton. The show is directed by Al Schnupp. Guest designer Tim Dugan is designing the set\, new faculty member Brian Healy is designing lights\, costume shop manager Sarah Bryan is designing costumes\, and Clint Bryson is the technical director. \nIn a 2012 interview with Gerard Raymond\, Herzog said\, “(Vera is) based quite directly on my real biological grandmother\, who is 95 and lives still in Greenwich Village. Her name is Leepe; it’s an unusual name. She’s very sharp-tongued and quick\, very loving and also very critical\, and is just a legendary figure in my family. She actually worked in the theatre — as a production secretary and assistant — and she remains a very devoted leftist.” \nTickets are $20 for the public and $12 for students\, senior citizens and children. Tickets are available through the Performing Arts Ticket Office from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849). \nThe play is produced with the permission of Samuel French Inc.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly to Host Girl Scouts in Cybersecurity and Internet Safety Course
DESCRIPTION:About 75 members of the Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast (GSCCC) are expected to participate in a cybersecurity program offered by the California Cyber Training Complex (CCTC) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday\, Nov. 4. \nThe program\, titled “Being Secure in a Cyber World\,” will be held at various locations on the Cal Poly campus. It will provide the girls with hands-on education on internet safety and inform them about protecting their identities online. Participants will earn a patch upon completion. \nGirls will learn about the “cyber age” as it relates to smartphones\, computers and the web\, including internet safety and protecting private information. The event will introduce girls to cybersecurity careers and the skills they will need to navigate an increasingly tech-driven world. \n“We are excited to bring ‘Being Secure in a Cyber World’ to Girl Scouts\,” said Jody Skenderian\, CEO of Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast and a Cal Poly alumna. “The programs being offered by the CCTC are important for girls as parents look for resources to help keep their daughters informed and safe online. \n“Cal Poly and the CCTC value increasing the participation of girls and women into science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and furthering the training of our future cyber workforce\,” said Bruce Burton\, CCTC program manager. “This event allows us to help the local community make progress on both fronts.” \n“Being Secure in a Cyber World” is designed for Girl Scouts of all ages and levels. The cost for girls is $5 and includes a patch. There is no cost for adults to attend\, but they must register. For more information or to register\, visit girlscoutsccc.org/events. \nCybersecurity is part of today’s Girl Scout experience\, providing girls throughout GSCCC’s six counties a variety of opportunities to have a foundation and inspiration to embrace science and technology while developing leadership skills.

SUMMARY:Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center presents: The Lost City of Cecil B. De Mille
DESCRIPTION:$100/person\nIn 1923\, Cecil B. DeMille produced an early blockbuster film\, The Ten Commandments\, which required him to build one of the largest movie sets in history on our local coastline. He left the movie set buried near the beach where it sat for nearly a century. Fast forward several decades\, when documentary filmmaker\, Peter Brosnan\, began his search for this movie set during the early 1980s. He set out to make a film about the unique and significant contribution that Cecil B. DeMille made to the movie industry through this piece of Americana.\nNow Brosnan’s film\, The Lost City of DeMille\, a documentary about the thirty years that it took to archaeologically excavate DeMille’s work\, will be debuting the Far Western Tavern in Orcutt.

SUMMARY:SLOFolks Presents: Tony Furtado
DESCRIPTION:Join us in November for this indoor show.\nDoors open at 6:30\, show starts at 7:30.\n$20 per person \nTony Furtado is an indie record label’s dream artist. He has lived primarily on the road for the last two decades. He is gregarious\, engaging and entertaining\, on and off stage. He’s been called a genius on banjo and slide guitar\, and his own creative interpretation-hybrid of Americana and indie folk/rock is engaging and captivating. Furtado has often been compared to Ry Cooder and Paul Simon in his latest albums as he guides his attention to detail and proclivity for traditional music into the pop framework. Onstage\, whether playing with a band or solo\, he owns the room\, mixing stories of his travels with musicianship that is off the charts.

SUMMARY:Morrissey
DESCRIPTION:Morrissey has revealed a full US tour in support of his new studio album ‘Low in High School’ (out November 17 on Etienne/BMG). Backed by his full live band\, each performance promises to be an intimate evening with Morrissey where he will perform many of his beloved classics as well as new material from ‘Low in High School\,’ including lead single “Spent The Day In Bed.” Additionally\, on October 20th\, a special five LP box set deluxe version of The Smiths’ ‘The Queen is Dead’ will be released to celebrate what is perhaps the band’s most iconic album. \nThe tour will make a stop at Vina Robles Amphitheatre on Sunday\, November 5. Full itinerary on Morrissey’s official Facebook page: Facebook.com/Morrissey \n“Spent The Day In Bed” has been called an ode to self-care by The AV Club and received plaudits from Rolling Stone\, NPR Music\, and Billboard\, while Stereogum lauded its “slickly theatrical” imagery. \nPre-order ‘Low in High School’ here: https://morrissey.lnk.to/LiHSPR \nRecognized as one of the most influential artists of all time\, Morrissey is widely credited as a seminal figure in the emergence of indie rock and Britpop\, and his music acts as a rite of passage for all who discover alternative music. His lyrics\, at times blunt and fearless\, other times vulnerable and poignant\, continue to resonate with listeners around the world with their unmatched emotional depth and theatrical\, poetic delivery. After The Smiths\, Morrissey achieved greater success as a prolific solo artist. All 10 of his solo albums have entered the Top 10 on the UK album charts\, including three entries at No. 1. In 2013\, Morrissey published his record-breaking autobiography on Penguin Classics\, immediately topping the best-seller list with literary reviewers hailing it a masterpiece in writing and prose. Pitchfork called him “one of the most singular figures in Western popular culture\,” and the UK’s Independent declared\, “Most pop stars have to be dead before they reach the iconic status he has reached in his lifetime.”
