SUMMARY:Melodrama presents Baskerville - A Sherlock Holmes Mystery
DESCRIPTION:Get your deerstalker cap on — the play’s afoot! Comedic genius Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor\, Moon Over Buffalo) transforms the classic The Hound of the Baskervilles into a murderously funny adventure featuring 5 actors playing dozens of roles. The male heirs of the Baskerville line are being dispatched one by one. To find their killer\, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson must brave the desolate moors before a family curse dooms its newest heir. Does a wild hellhound prowl the moors of Devonshire? Can our heroes discover the truth in time? Join the fun and see how far from elementary the truth can be.

SUMMARY:Good Morning SLO | February
DESCRIPTION:A dynamic and informative 90-minute breakfast program specifically geared to San Luis Obispo business people. Held on the fourth Thursday of each month\, local experts focus on a wide variety of community and business topics. \nWe’re sorry\, registration for this event is CLOSED. You are welcome to come to the door\, and if space is available we will get you in on first-come-first-served basis. Doors open at 7:00 am. \nTopics this month include: \nPRIME TIME | AMAZON IN SLO\n \nDid you know that Amazon has a tech hub in SLO? Interested in learning more about what goes on at Amazon SLO? No need to ask Alexa. Spencer Voorheis – a senior software engineer for Amazon in SLO – will share how the company wound up here and what kind of work they’re doing locally.\nLAND OF MANY USES | DUNES IN THE NEWS\n \nThe Oceano Dunes are a jewel of the Central Coast\, beloved for beachcombing\, recreation and its unique ecosystem. Such diverse use in this dynamic environment creates challenges\, so we asked Dena Bellman\, who oversees the Dunes for California State Parks\, to address how they’re managing the vast area and reveal results from a new economic impact study. \nCONSTRUCTION AHEAD | AN UPDATE ON DOWNTOWN SLO\n \nAt moments of peak frustration\, it may seem like downtown SLO is one giant construction zone. But any minor inconveniences will soon yield swank new hotels\, additional parking and more housing options. Michael Codron\, SLO’s community development director\, will provide an overview of the work as well as some context on downtown’s past\, present and future. \nA DOOR TO THE WORLD OPENS AT CUESTA\n \nStep into a box and cross time and space to come face to face with someone in another part of the world. That’s the concept behind an immersive exhibit coming to Cuesta College’s Miossi Art Gallery next week. Gallery Coordinator Emma Saperstein will share how the project is forging global connections and how it reflects her vision for the community art space. \nLESSONS FROM THE THOMAS FIRE… \nThe devastating recent fires to our north and south stirred outpourings of compassion and support but also worries over similar tragedy striking at home. We invited Rob Lewin\, former SLO County fire chief and Santa Barbara’s director of emergency management\, to share his unique perspective on what our community can learn about disaster preparedness from the Thomas Fire and ensuing mudslides. \n…AND A ROCKIN RESPONSE  \nFrom Concerts in the Plaza to sharing a stage with The Temptations\, Damon Castillo has rocked his way into local legend. He’s also one of the headlining acts at San Luis Obispo Responds\, a benefit concert for Santa Barbara County fire victims and Puerto Rico hurricane relief coming to the PAC Feb. 23. Castillo will get us in the groove for a jam-packed evening of local vocals.

SUMMARY:Touchette “The Young Series”
DESCRIPTION:– Cal Poly’s University Art Gallery will present “The Young Series\,” portraits of teenagers in Oahu\, Hawaii; Tokyo\, and New York City\, by artist Amy Touchette from Feb. 22 through March 16. \nTouchette will open the exhibit with a talk at 4 p.m. Thursday\, Feb. 22\, in Room 149 of the Dexter Building (No. 34) on campus. A reception will follow at 5 p.m. in the gallery\, located on the ground floor of the same building. \nThroughout her career\, photographic artist Touchette has explored connections between humanity\, taking photographs of people within their social groups and communities. A documentarian and a street photographer\, she has utilized the power of photography to create authentic portraits of those who interest her. \nIn 2012\, The New York Times published images from New York Young\, Touchette’s street portrait series of teenagers in New York City. The newspaper described the work as “a potent mix of street savvy and aching vulnerability.” \nNew York Young inspired Touchette to make the same style of portraits of teenagers in Oahu and Tokyo to discover what teen culture looks like in three disparate island nations. She writes: “Before travel became so ubiquitous\, island populations were more sequestered. … Their culture would reflect that isolation in that it felt more unified and unique than landlocked settings. Although the world is globalized now\, significant remnants of each island culture still exist. I thought that because these three locations had strong and distinct personalities\, it would create a more heightened and interesting visual experience.” \nTrained at the International Center of Photography\, Touchette began her artistic career as a writer and painter\, earning a Bachelor of Arts in literature and studio art and a Master of Arts in literature. Her first monograph\, “Shoot the Arrow: A Portrait of The World Famous *BOB*\,” was published and funded by Un-Gyve Press in 2013. Other publications include The New York Times\, The New York Observer\, and Esquire Russia. Her photographs have exhibited nationally and internationally\, including MoMA-Moscow\, Leica Gallery-Warszawa\, Hamburg Triennial of Photography\, and in the U.S. embassies in Vienna\, Austria\, and Ashgabat\, Turkmenistan. She has given artist lectures at UCLA Extension\, B&H Superstore\, School of Visual Arts\, and the School of the International Center of Photography\, among other institutions. Touchette also works as a freelance photography writer for publications such as PDN\, Rangefinder\, and Emerging Photographer. She writes an ongoing series about street photography for Envato Tuts+. She is represented by ClampArt in New York City.
