SUMMARY:Cal Poly Kennedy Library Exhibit to Showcase Hip-Hop Culture
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the five elements of hip-hop culture: graffiti writing\, breakdancing\, deejaying\, emceeing\, and knowledge production — used to speak truth and justice to social ills in the U.S. and beyond. \nThe public is invited to an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday\, April 19\, on the second floor of Kennedy Library. The reception will include performances by student emcees\, deejays\, spoken-word artists and the SLO Breakers\, Cal Poly’s breakdancers club. \nThe exhibit\, “Don’t Believe the Hype: The Radical Elements of Hip Hop\,” will feature the work of Cal Poly ethnic studies Professor Jenell Navarro and student curators\, who “explored each of the elements and placed them under a campus and regional lens to showcase the conscious roots of hip-hop culture\,” Navarro said. “Hip-hop crosses four decades and many generations\, speaking truth to power. Its wordplay\, influence and cross-generational fluency provides a voice that continues to change the world.” \nCollaborative and participatory — the exhibit integrates faculty and student-driven scholarship\, creativity and curation to showcase hip-hop culture as an important narrative role in telling a corrective history of urban life in the face of racism\, classism and sexism. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public. “See hip-hop culture for what it is — a truth-telling reality check with a pedagogical agenda — where young people take the mic\, the floor\, the turntables or a subway car and dare to write a radical vision of their world\,” Navarro said. \nThe exhibit is sponsored in collaboration with Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library\, Ethnic Studies Department and Architecture Department.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly University Art Gallery presents: the “2018 Juried Student Exhibition”
DESCRIPTION:Gallery opening reception set for April 12 from 5-7 p.m. \nSAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s University Art Gallery will present a vetted showcase of artwork made in the Art and Design Department\, to run April 12 through May 11. \nA reception will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday\, April 12\, in the gallery\, located on the ground floor of the Dexter Building (No. 34). \nThe exhibit was juried by painter and sculptor Peter Charles\, a San Luis Obispo resident who has exhibited work in many museums and galleries throughout the U.S. As juror\, Charles selected the artwork that will be included in the show. \n“Selecting is a tough job\, because only about one third of submitted pieces make the cut\,” said Gallery Specialist Garet Zook. \nCharles earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University School of Art and Architecture. Prior to moving to San Luis Obispo in 2015\, he taught sculpture and foundation design in the Art and Art History Department at Georgetown University in Washington\, D.C. He also received a National Endowment for the Arts and a Visual Arts Fellowship Grant. He is currently represented by Green Chalk Contemporary in Monterey\, California. \nThe University Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. \n– Art & Design Department: www.artdesign.calpoly.edu/\n– College of Liberal Arts: www.cla.calpoly.edu/\n– Peter Charles: www.petercharlesart.com/

SUMMARY:Establishing a Lean Culture
DESCRIPTION:— The Central Coast Lean program in Cal Poly’s Orfalea College of Business will host the seventh annual Central Coast Lean Summit on Apr. 16 and 17\, at the SLO Brew Rock Activity Center to showcase successful “lean” strategies in health care\, education\, government and non-profit agencies. \n“Establishing a Lean Culture” is this year’s theme. Industry leaders and lean experts will focus on creating high-performing workplaces from a human perspective. \nLean business practices aim to increase customer value while minimizing waste across all facets of an organization. The philosophy originated in manufacturing\, but has influenced other sectors to streamline processes and require less human effort\, less space\, less capital\, and less time to make cost-effective products and services with fewer defects.\n“I think this year’s theme will help organizations reap true value from their investment in lean tools and processes by engaging their workforce\,” said Cal Poly Professor Eric Olsen\, who is host and facilitator of the lean summit. “This event will benefit everyone from CEOs to new hires across a variety of industries.”\nThe Summit on Monday\, Apr. 16 will feature two keynote addresses. In the first\, Jeff Hastie – Bose Global Director of Lean Enterprise\, will share the story of their Lean Enterprise Maturity Model as an inflection point in the Lean Enterprise journey at Bose Corporation. In the second\, Carlos Scholz – Director of TPMG Strategic Initiatives for Kaiser Permanente\, North Valley\, will talk about the North Valley Way: A lean operating system as a vehicle to achieve engagement and continuous improvement by every team member. \nThe Summit will also include interactive breakouts led by experienced facilitators to allow participants to probe pertinent topics and share and apply concepts to their industry and function.\nThroughout the event\, a “Coaching Café” will give participants a chance to discuss lean challenges with Sam MacPherson\, Lean Transformation Leader and Founder of the Lean Leadership Academy. Attendees will be able to network with lean experts from throughout California and collaborate with Cal Poly faculty. Participants will also see lean posters of improvement projects from Cal Poly students and the Central Coast lean Community. The day will end with a reception where Summit participants can network in the SLO Brew Rock Beer Garden.\nThe event will end with a Post-Summit Workshop on Tuesday\, Apr. 17\, 9am-3pm. Jim Benson\, author of “Personal Kanban: Mapping Work Navigating Life\,” will discuss continuous improvement processes for back-office employees.\n “We hope to expand upon the lean community of local leaders by providing networking opportunities with like-minded managers engaged in lean strategies\,” Olsen said.\nRegistration is open. Tickets and corporate sponsorship information can be found at: https://www.cob.calpoly.edu/ccl/\nAbout the Orfalea College of Business and Cal Poly\nCal Poly’s Orfalea College of Business prepares career-ready\, global business leaders through the university’s Learn by Doing philosophy.
