To Kate\, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. \nAnd Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn’t understand the relationship between man and dog. SUMMARY:Cal Poly Kennedy Library Exhibit to Showcase Hip-Hop Culture
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the five elements of hip-hop culture: graffiti writing\, breakdancing\, deejaying\, emceeing\, and knowledge production — used to speak truth and justice to social ills in the U.S. and beyond. \nThe public is invited to an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday\, April 19\, on the second floor of Kennedy Library. The reception will include performances by student emcees\, deejays\, spoken-word artists and the SLO Breakers\, Cal Poly’s breakdancers club. \nThe exhibit\, “Don’t Believe the Hype: The Radical Elements of Hip Hop\,” will feature the work of Cal Poly ethnic studies Professor Jenell Navarro and student curators\, who “explored each of the elements and placed them under a campus and regional lens to showcase the conscious roots of hip-hop culture\,” Navarro said. “Hip-hop crosses four decades and many generations\, speaking truth to power. Its wordplay\, influence and cross-generational fluency provides a voice that continues to change the world.” \nCollaborative and participatory — the exhibit integrates faculty and student-driven scholarship\, creativity and curation to showcase hip-hop culture as an important narrative role in telling a corrective history of urban life in the face of racism\, classism and sexism. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public. “See hip-hop culture for what it is — a truth-telling reality check with a pedagogical agenda — where young people take the mic\, the floor\, the turntables or a subway car and dare to write a radical vision of their world\,” Navarro said. \nThe exhibit is sponsored in collaboration with Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library\, Ethnic Studies Department and Architecture Department.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly University Art Gallery presents: the “2018 Juried Student Exhibition”
DESCRIPTION:Gallery opening reception set for April 12 from 5-7 p.m. \nSAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s University Art Gallery will present a vetted showcase of artwork made in the Art and Design Department\, to run April 12 through May 11. \nA reception will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday\, April 12\, in the gallery\, located on the ground floor of the Dexter Building (No. 34). \nThe exhibit was juried by painter and sculptor Peter Charles\, a San Luis Obispo resident who has exhibited work in many museums and galleries throughout the U.S. As juror\, Charles selected the artwork that will be included in the show. \n“Selecting is a tough job\, because only about one third of submitted pieces make the cut\,” said Gallery Specialist Garet Zook. \nCharles earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University School of Art and Architecture. Prior to moving to San Luis Obispo in 2015\, he taught sculpture and foundation design in the Art and Art History Department at Georgetown University in Washington\, D.C. He also received a National Endowment for the Arts and a Visual Arts Fellowship Grant. He is currently represented by Green Chalk Contemporary in Monterey\, California. \nThe University Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. \n– Art & Design Department: www.artdesign.calpoly.edu/\n– College of Liberal Arts: www.cla.calpoly.edu/\n– Peter Charles: www.petercharlesart.com/

SUMMARY:Ceramic Wine Tumbler Workshop @ Biddle Ranch Vineyard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another clay workshop! We will be making Ceramic Wine Tumblers! You will learn the basics of working with clay\, slab building\, and texturing clay. Amanda Eedle and Adriana Lemus will guide you through this beginning clay workshop. \n$45 ($40 for Wine Club members) includes clay\, all materials to use during the workshop\, instruction by experienced ceramic artists\, and a glass of wine! Members please log in to see special pricing. \nAmanda Eedle Bitetti is an art teacher and ceramicist in our community that has brought her instruction to Biddle Ranch. She moved from New York 2 years ago after completion of her M.A from Columbia University and B.F.A from Syracuse University. Aside from her teaching profession\, Amanda maintains her own company\, Lavender Lemon Pottery which sells primarily online. \nAdriana Lemus’ work ranges from abstract to realistic pieces inspired by the figure. She works primarily in ceramic sculpture and painting and is currently working on a series of figure paintings and abstract ceramic sculptures\, exploring ways to empower the female figure. Born in San Luis Obispo\, CA\, Adriana was raised by artistic parents. Her father’s work has been a huge inspiration for her own work. She graduated May of 2015 with a B.A. at the University of California\, Berkeley. She has shown in San Luis Obispo\, Oakland\, and multiple times at the Worth Ryder Art Gallery at UC Berkeley. \n*DISCLAIMER* in this class you will be making your own pottery. The work is not mass produced and will be handmade by you. Because of the unpredictable nature of the kiln and the handmade nature of your artwork\, pieces may warp or break. The artists are not responsible for remaking work. The turnaround time for work is roughly 3 to 4 weeks depending on how fast the works dry. You will also have the option for your work to be shipped.
