SUMMARY:Cal Poly Kennedy Library Exhibit to Showcase Hip-Hop Culture
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the five elements of hip-hop culture: graffiti writing\, breakdancing\, deejaying\, emceeing\, and knowledge production — used to speak truth and justice to social ills in the U.S. and beyond. \nThe public is invited to an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday\, April 19\, on the second floor of Kennedy Library. The reception will include performances by student emcees\, deejays\, spoken-word artists and the SLO Breakers\, Cal Poly’s breakdancers club. \nThe exhibit\, “Don’t Believe the Hype: The Radical Elements of Hip Hop\,” will feature the work of Cal Poly ethnic studies Professor Jenell Navarro and student curators\, who “explored each of the elements and placed them under a campus and regional lens to showcase the conscious roots of hip-hop culture\,” Navarro said. “Hip-hop crosses four decades and many generations\, speaking truth to power. Its wordplay\, influence and cross-generational fluency provides a voice that continues to change the world.” \nCollaborative and participatory — the exhibit integrates faculty and student-driven scholarship\, creativity and curation to showcase hip-hop culture as an important narrative role in telling a corrective history of urban life in the face of racism\, classism and sexism. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public. “See hip-hop culture for what it is — a truth-telling reality check with a pedagogical agenda — where young people take the mic\, the floor\, the turntables or a subway car and dare to write a radical vision of their world\,” Navarro said. \nThe exhibit is sponsored in collaboration with Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library\, Ethnic Studies Department and Architecture Department.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly University Art Gallery presents: the “2018 Juried Student Exhibition”
DESCRIPTION:Gallery opening reception set for April 12 from 5-7 p.m. \nSAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s University Art Gallery will present a vetted showcase of artwork made in the Art and Design Department\, to run April 12 through May 11. \nA reception will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday\, April 12\, in the gallery\, located on the ground floor of the Dexter Building (No. 34). \nThe exhibit was juried by painter and sculptor Peter Charles\, a San Luis Obispo resident who has exhibited work in many museums and galleries throughout the U.S. As juror\, Charles selected the artwork that will be included in the show. \n“Selecting is a tough job\, because only about one third of submitted pieces make the cut\,” said Gallery Specialist Garet Zook. \nCharles earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University School of Art and Architecture. Prior to moving to San Luis Obispo in 2015\, he taught sculpture and foundation design in the Art and Art History Department at Georgetown University in Washington\, D.C. He also received a National Endowment for the Arts and a Visual Arts Fellowship Grant. He is currently represented by Green Chalk Contemporary in Monterey\, California. \nThe University Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. \n– Art & Design Department: www.artdesign.calpoly.edu/\n– College of Liberal Arts: www.cla.calpoly.edu/\n– Peter Charles: www.petercharlesart.com/

SUMMARY:ELECTRIC ABSTRACTIONS
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBITS // ELECTRIC ABSTRACTIONS \nAPR 20 – JUN 10 \nOVERVIEW // Electric Abstractions focuses on three California artists using computer technology to create contemporary fine art. Daniel Leighton\, Robert Chapman\, and Jayne Behman have been creating images digitally for years—drawing with digits and painting with pixels. Jayne Behman and Robert Chapman both have had formal training and years of experience and backgrounds in traditional studio art. Their forays into digital art started after they had already established themselves as artists. \nDaniel Leighton came to digital art already well-versed in programming computer apps and making moving pictures when he decided to create computer art. “For SLOMA\, this is an opportunity to embrace new media\, celebrate three artistic talents with visually compelling artwork\, and present an exhibition that also appeals to younger audiences\,” said Ruta Saliklis\, SLOMA curator. Daniel Leighton’s digital art can be transported by the viewer from a static image into a moving art piece using apps on an iPhone or iPad\, making for a more participatory and personalized experience. \nRobert Chapman’s artwork starts with under drawings associated in technique to abstract expressionism. Triggered by the subconscious\, he proceeds by adding layers to define objective realistic art with that of the objectivity found in the observable nature of reality. \nJayne Behman embraces the iPad as her canvas and uses computer apps to provide her drawing and painting tools. Her images reflect her inner child that deals with adult challenges. \nRelated Programming\nSaturday\, April 21 at 2 PM: Panel discussion with the three artists of Electric Abstractions. \nThursday\, June 7 at 12 PM: Art at High Noon with artist Jayne Behman. Free admission. \nSunday\, June 10 at 5 PM: Concert with pianist Josh Nelson with multimedia video and light presentation to compliment Electric Abstractions. $20 general seating. \nDETAILS // A public reception with the artist will take place on Friday\, May 4 from 6-9 PM in conjunction with Art After Dark. Members-only preview 5 to 6 PM.

SUMMARY:Slo Rep Theatre presents Ubu's Other Shoe Readings: Life X 3
DESCRIPTION:April 20 – April 21\, 2018\n Friday @ 7 pm\n Saturday @ 2 pm & 7 pm \nHenry and Sonia are having a difficult evening with Arnaud\, their wakeful six-year-old son; but Henry has other worries. About to publish the results of two years’ research on the flatness of galaxy halos\, he’s desperate to make a good impression on the distinguished astrophysicist Hubert Finidori\, who wields a decisive influence over the question of Henry’s longed-for promotion. So when Hubert arrives with his rebellious wife\, Inez\, in tow for dinner on the wrong night\, the fact that there is no food in the apartment (merely an ample supply of Sancerre) is only one of the potentially disastrous elements in play. Add to this Hubert’s often brutal treatment of Inez; his lust for Sonia; Inez’s weak head for alcohol; Henry’s discovery that rival scientists may have beaten him to the punch; Sonia’s equivocal feeling of attraction towards Hubert; and the entirely unpredictable behavior of the invisible Arnaud—and the stage is set for a catastrophic unraveling of normal civilized behavior. But will it be this kind of catastrophe? Or that? Or\, perhaps\, worse still\, will catastrophe be averted altogether?

SUMMARY:SLO County YMCA's 10th Annual Jump-In Competition & Healthy Kids Day
DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of elementary school jump ropers from all over San Luis Obispo County will descend upon the Cuesta College gym Saturday\, April 21 for the 10th Annual Jump-In Competition. This family-oriented competition at Cuesta College is from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.\, Saturday\, April 21. There will be healthy living displays and fun for the whole family. Sponsors for this event include Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center\, Heal SLO and Cuesta College. Attendance is free to the public.\nPut on by the San Luis Obispo County YMCA\, this competition is two-part\, with timed speed jumping and choreographed performances by YMCA after-school program participants. This year\, the event incorporates the Y’s Healthy Kids Day\, and events will be happening across the nation. All Central Coast families are invited to come learn about the Y’s summer programs\, and there will be information stations and activities promoting healthy eating and active living. There will also be some fun giveaways at the event.\nFor the jump rope portion of the day\, local students have been busy practicing and perfecting their jumping skills. Each school site team picks a theme\, music and costumes\, and choreographs a routine. A panel of local judges will choose the best performances based on skill and creativity. The top three teams will get trophies. All participants will receive medals for their hard work and dedication.\nThe Jump-In event demonstrates the SLO County YMCA’s motto: “For youth development\, for healthy living\, for social responsibility\,” and is part of their HEPA (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity) program. Jumping rope is not only a great activity for kids after school but also an excellent form of exercise. It also encourages children to participate in other forms of exercise besides traditional sports teams. More information about the SLO County YMCA can be found at sloymca.org.

SUMMARY:Community Concussion Symposium hosted by Dignity Health
DESCRIPTION:In response to the estimated 300\,000 concussions that high school athletes sustain nationally every year\, Dignity Health Central Coast\, including Arroyo Grande Community Hospital (AGCH)\, French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC)\, and Marian Regional Medical Center (MRMC)\, have partnered with Dignity Health’s Barrow Neurological Institute and the Dignity Health Foundation to locally launch the Dignity Health Concussion Network.\nTo educate athletes and community members about concussions\, Dignity Health Central Coast is hosting a free Community Concussion Symposium on Saturday\, April 21\, 2018 from 1:30 to 3:30p.m. in the Arroyo Grande High School multi-purpose room at 495 Valley Road\, Arroyo Grande. Join us for an afternoon of education and information about prevention\, identification\, treatment\, and recovery protocol. The informative event will include: \n•	Light snacks and refreshments\, information and materials\, educational booths\, and demonstrations of the Barrow Brainbook\n•	Dignity Health Central Coast Concussion Network introduction and information by Willard Chung\, MD\, Clinical Chairman\, Dignity Health Central Coast Concussion Network\n•	Featured guest speaker Chris Nowinski\, PhD\, cofounder and CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation and author of Head Games: Football’s Concussion Crisis\, will discuss what you need to know about concussions \n “We know that a significant number of student athletes in high contact sports suffer a concussion each year\, says Willard Chung\, M.D.\, Clinical Chairman for the Dignity Health Central Coast Concussion Network. “Dignity Health Central Coast is pleased to be partnering with local athletic trainers\, coaches\, and high school student athletes to establish baseline measurements and educate on the symptoms of a concussion so that they can seek necessary and critical medical attention when needed.”\nThe program\, a first-of-its-kind student athlete focused approach to concussion education and prevention\, is now available to Central Coast high school athletic programs. Currently\, six Central Coast high schools – Arroyo Grande High School\, Mission College Prep High School\, Santa Maria High School\, Orcutt Academy High School\, Pioneer Valley High School\, and St. Joseph High School – participate in Dignity Health Concussion Network’s comprehensive concussion education\, cognitive assessments\, and pre-and-post concussion testing\, but all are welcome to attend the symposium.\nWhile almost half of high school concussions occur in football\, concussions are prevalent in many other youth sports including: soccer\, cheerleading\, water polo\, and hockey. The program will continue its progress by expanding\, as additional local high schools continue to join the network.\nFor more information on the program\, visit: www.dignityhealthfoundation.org
