SUMMARY:Cal Poly Kennedy Library Exhibit to Showcase Hip-Hop Culture
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing the five elements of hip-hop culture: graffiti writing\, breakdancing\, deejaying\, emceeing\, and knowledge production — used to speak truth and justice to social ills in the U.S. and beyond. \nThe public is invited to an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday\, April 19\, on the second floor of Kennedy Library. The reception will include performances by student emcees\, deejays\, spoken-word artists and the SLO Breakers\, Cal Poly’s breakdancers club. \nThe exhibit\, “Don’t Believe the Hype: The Radical Elements of Hip Hop\,” will feature the work of Cal Poly ethnic studies Professor Jenell Navarro and student curators\, who “explored each of the elements and placed them under a campus and regional lens to showcase the conscious roots of hip-hop culture\,” Navarro said. “Hip-hop crosses four decades and many generations\, speaking truth to power. Its wordplay\, influence and cross-generational fluency provides a voice that continues to change the world.” \nCollaborative and participatory — the exhibit integrates faculty and student-driven scholarship\, creativity and curation to showcase hip-hop culture as an important narrative role in telling a corrective history of urban life in the face of racism\, classism and sexism. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public. “See hip-hop culture for what it is — a truth-telling reality check with a pedagogical agenda — where young people take the mic\, the floor\, the turntables or a subway car and dare to write a radical vision of their world\,” Navarro said. \nThe exhibit is sponsored in collaboration with Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library\, Ethnic Studies Department and Architecture Department.

SUMMARY:ELECTRIC ABSTRACTIONS
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBITS // ELECTRIC ABSTRACTIONS \nAPR 20 – JUN 10 \nOVERVIEW // Electric Abstractions focuses on three California artists using computer technology to create contemporary fine art. Daniel Leighton\, Robert Chapman\, and Jayne Behman have been creating images digitally for years—drawing with digits and painting with pixels. Jayne Behman and Robert Chapman both have had formal training and years of experience and backgrounds in traditional studio art. Their forays into digital art started after they had already established themselves as artists. \nDaniel Leighton came to digital art already well-versed in programming computer apps and making moving pictures when he decided to create computer art. “For SLOMA\, this is an opportunity to embrace new media\, celebrate three artistic talents with visually compelling artwork\, and present an exhibition that also appeals to younger audiences\,” said Ruta Saliklis\, SLOMA curator. Daniel Leighton’s digital art can be transported by the viewer from a static image into a moving art piece using apps on an iPhone or iPad\, making for a more participatory and personalized experience. \nRobert Chapman’s artwork starts with under drawings associated in technique to abstract expressionism. Triggered by the subconscious\, he proceeds by adding layers to define objective realistic art with that of the objectivity found in the observable nature of reality. \nJayne Behman embraces the iPad as her canvas and uses computer apps to provide her drawing and painting tools. Her images reflect her inner child that deals with adult challenges. \nRelated Programming\nSaturday\, April 21 at 2 PM: Panel discussion with the three artists of Electric Abstractions. \nThursday\, June 7 at 12 PM: Art at High Noon with artist Jayne Behman. Free admission. \nSunday\, June 10 at 5 PM: Concert with pianist Josh Nelson with multimedia video and light presentation to compliment Electric Abstractions. $20 general seating. \nDETAILS // A public reception with the artist will take place on Friday\, May 4 from 6-9 PM in conjunction with Art After Dark. Members-only preview 5 to 6 PM.
