SUMMARY:Scary Poppins at The Great American Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: Wednesday through Friday at 7 p.m.\, Saturday at 3 and 7 p.m.\, and Sunday at 6 p.m. \nIt’s Super-Nanny-Gone-Ballistic-Expialidocious! The Great American Melodrama presents the hilarious musical spoof Scary Poppins\, opening September 20. \nScary Poppins tells the story of Jack and Jill Peabody (Ben Abbott and Annali Fuchs-Wackowski) who live in London with their widowed father\, Professor Peabody (Jeff Salsbury). He’s a nutty inventor with little time for his children. When he hires a nanny\, though\, the whole family gets more than they bargained for: instead of Mary Poppins\, they get her twin sister\, Scary Poppins! This Poppins is a frightening creature who arrives with creepy music\, mind control powers\, and a host of wacky friends. But when the evil Russian ambassador (Billy Breed) shows up\, it’s up to Scary to save the day. Written by Ben Millet\, with direction and choreography by Eric Hoit\, this show is full of outrageous characters\, hilarious song satires and pop culture references. It’s a “practically perfect” parody for the whole family! \nFollowing each performance of Scary Poppins is the Halloween Party Vaudeville Revue. It’s no trick\, this new revue is a treat! The talented performers of the Melodrama are hosting a special Halloween costume party. Everyone is invited to hear them sing spooky favorites\, tell corny jokes\, and dance the night away! The new revue is a hilarious send up the Halloween season. Rachel Tietz directs and Michael Wilkins provides musical direction and accompaniment. \nThe Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $21 to $28\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.

SUMMARY:Cosmic Evolution Project and the Cal Poly Astronomical Society Present: How Exoplanets Are Discovered
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAstronomy Professor to Discuss How Exoplanets Are Discovered on Oct. 10 at Cal Poly \n  \nSAN LUIS OBISPO — An Amherst College astronomy professor will discuss discovering and researching planets outside of the solar system from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Oct. 10\, in Spanos Theatre at Cal Poly. \n  \nKate Follette will explore how\, when and where planets form. She will explain how astronomers can “de-twinkle” stars to make incredibly accurate observations of these faint\, distant exoplanets\, including detecting the light coming from newly formed planets. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. \n  \nThe event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. \n  \n“I’ve always been interested in space and dreamed of being an astronaut as a kid\, but I didn’t have any intention of pursuing a science career until I took an introductory astronomy course as a freshman in college\,” Follette said. “My interest in exoplanets stems from its focus on one of the fundamental human questions: Are we alone? \n  \n“It’s pretty amazing that I’m now making a career studying exoplanets when they were pure science fiction until I was in middle school.” \n  \nIn the past two decades thousands of exoplanets have been discovered — mostly with NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope\, which launched in March of 2009. Some are gigantic planets orbiting near their parent stars; others are icy or even rocky. \n  \nFollette is a member of the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey team\, which announced the discovery of exoplanet 51 Eridani b\, a methane-shrouded gas giant similar to a young Jupiter. \n  \nThe group uses large\, ground-based telescopes and adaptive-optics technology that corrects for the blurring effects of the Earth’s atmosphere. This combination allows Follette and her colleagues to search for planets around other stars and the disks of gas and dust that form these planets. \n  \nFollette has traveled the globe\, from Chile to Hawaii\, to use the world’s largest telescopes to observe planets in our galaxy. She was formerly a NASA Sagan Fellow at Stanford University\, a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow at the University of Arizona\, and a Fulbright Fellow at Japan’s Kyoto University. \n  \nThe talk is sponsored by the Cosmic Evolution Project and the Cal Poly Astronomical Society. For more information\, visit https://evolution.calpoly.edu/exoplanets of call 805-756-2448. \n  \nLinks \nEvent page: https://evolution.calpoly.edu/exoplanets \nKate Follette: http://www.katefollette.com \n  \ncircumstellar disk.jpg — Artist’s illustration of planets forming in a circumstellar disk like the one surrounding the star LkCa 15. The gas and dust are in the process of creating new stars\, while also being eroded by the light from nearby stars that have recently formed. \n  \n
