SUMMARY:Scary Poppins at The Great American Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: Wednesday through Friday at 7 p.m.\, Saturday at 3 and 7 p.m.\, and Sunday at 6 p.m. \nIt’s Super-Nanny-Gone-Ballistic-Expialidocious! The Great American Melodrama presents the hilarious musical spoof Scary Poppins\, opening September 20. \nScary Poppins tells the story of Jack and Jill Peabody (Ben Abbott and Annali Fuchs-Wackowski) who live in London with their widowed father\, Professor Peabody (Jeff Salsbury). He’s a nutty inventor with little time for his children. When he hires a nanny\, though\, the whole family gets more than they bargained for: instead of Mary Poppins\, they get her twin sister\, Scary Poppins! This Poppins is a frightening creature who arrives with creepy music\, mind control powers\, and a host of wacky friends. But when the evil Russian ambassador (Billy Breed) shows up\, it’s up to Scary to save the day. Written by Ben Millet\, with direction and choreography by Eric Hoit\, this show is full of outrageous characters\, hilarious song satires and pop culture references. It’s a “practically perfect” parody for the whole family! \nFollowing each performance of Scary Poppins is the Halloween Party Vaudeville Revue. It’s no trick\, this new revue is a treat! The talented performers of the Melodrama are hosting a special Halloween costume party. Everyone is invited to hear them sing spooky favorites\, tell corny jokes\, and dance the night away! The new revue is a hilarious send up the Halloween season. Rachel Tietz directs and Michael Wilkins provides musical direction and accompaniment. \nThe Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $21 to $28\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.

SUMMARY:The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Presents: Industry of the Ordinary: demo(cra)tic
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nABOUT THIS EXHIBITION:\nWhen I was a small boy\, my parents would take me on road trips to see interesting things. In my child’s mind\, they seemed to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the interesting. They had\, I imagined\, always known what they knew\, and their jobs as parents essentially entailed enumerating the many things that my mind should find wonder in. But I found so many of these experiences at the time to be oddly underwhelming. Instead\, I was struck by their wonder and enthusiasm – and I noted how they would turn to see if I was seeing the world they saw. \nIn time we must surely turn to our own children and\, pointing at some important object\, look to see if wonder has flickered across the faces of our charges. We wander through the world pointing\, counting\, and turning to the faces of the uninitiated. And slowly we come to know that no amount of castles can populate the imagination of a child. Theirs are minds of infinite wonder\, but they examine their lives as they find them. Their streets\, their friends\, their favorite trees to climb. Extraordinary things are beyond counting\, but the wonder that we pass on to the ones we love is an ordinary thing. And no less precious for it. \nThis exhibition is about wandering as a child might. \nABOUT INDUSTRY OF THE ORDINARY:\nThrough sculpture\, text\, photography\, video and performance\, Industry of the Ordinary (IOTO) are dedicated to an exploration and celebration of the customary\, the everyday\, and the usual. Their emphasis is on challenging pejorative notions of the ordinary and\, in doing so\, moving beyond the quotidian. \nMaking use of a variety of art-making strategies\, IOTO have primarily been concerned with the dynamics and aesthetics of public and performative spaces. Drawing inspiration from Joseph Beuys’s theory of ‘social sculpture’ and the Situationists\, IOTO have explored non-traditional sites for art works where accidental audiences can be found. Often collaborating with multiple members of the community\, these works attempt to occupy and invigorate public thoroughfares. The work is intended to provoke and promote public discourse\, to bring fine art out of the gallery or performing arts venue\, and\, without becoming didactic or pedantic\, make it readily available to the non-art-trained audience. \nIndustry of the Ordinary were formed in 2003. The two artists who make up this collaborative team\, Adam Brooks and Mathew Wilson\, have long histories as visual and performative artists. They bring complementary sensibilities to their activities. \nTheir projects exist in temporal terms but have also been conceived to function on the web site associated with the collaboration\, http://www.industryoftheordinary.com.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly to Host Succulent Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:More than 125 varieties of succulents will be available at Cal Poly’s Succulentopia plant sale from noon to 6 p.m. Friday\, Oct. 19\, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday\, Oct. 20\, at the Horticulture Unit near the Poly Plant Shop. \nVarieties include Crassula\, Echeveria\, Sedum\, Sedeveria\, Aloe\, Gasteria\, Haworthia\, Kalanchoe\, Graptopetalum\, Graptoveria\, Senecio\, Agave\, Peperomia\, Aeoniums\, Callisia\, Cyanotis\, Adromischus\, Sempervivum\, and Orostachy\, among others. More than 2\,500 plants will be available for purchase. \nFour students are involved in the student-run project\, one of several such hands-on experiences offered by the College of Agriculture\, Food and Environmental Sciences’ Horticulture and Crop Science Department. Students learn how to grow plants on deadline (including propagation techniques and proper watering) and how to market them. \n“I have been part of the succulent crew since last spring\, and I worked alone on the project over summer\,” said Karianne Rydberg\, an agricultural and environmental plant sciences senior and the student succulent manager. “I spent a lot of time propagating leaves and cuttings and growing high quality plants for Succulentopia. Being involved in this project gives me a taste of what it’s like to work in a commercial nursery and provides me with valuable techniques in producing quality\, marketable plants. It’s the ultimate Learn by Doing experience.” \nThree additional agricultural and environmental plant sciences students assisted with this year’s succulent production: sophomore Boden Cunningham\, senior Ted Fitzgerald\, and senior Kelsea Jones. \nStudents have been caring for the succulents since last spring. \n“With the production of climate-worthy succulent plants now so important to our region\, we plan to make Succulentopia a twice-a-year event\,” said faculty member Mike Bush\, who oversees the enterprise project. “Our students learn not only the techniques to growing professional-quality succulent plants but also insights into marketing\, retail and detailed planning — skills future employers consider essential.” \nThe cost of the plants is determined by size: four-inch pots\, $4.50; 4.5-inch pots\, $5.50; 6-inch succulent garden\, $12.50; 8-inch succulent garden\, $25; and additional large plants priced accordingly. Parking will be available at the Poly Plant Shop and in parking lot H-14\, located across from the sale\, during both sale days. \nAbout Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture\, Food and Environmental Sciences \nCal Poly is a nationally ranked\, comprehensive polytechnic university. The university’s College of Agriculture\, Food and Environmental Sciences is comprised of expert faculty members who take pride in their ability to transform academically motivated students into innovative professionals ready to solve the complex challenges associated with feeding the world in sustainable ways. Students have access to state-of-the-art laboratories\, including ranch land\, orchards\, vineyards and forests\, all of which provide the basis for Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing methodology. It is the fifth-largest college of agriculture in the country\, with 4\,000 undergraduate students.

SUMMARY:Levity® Academy Aerial Arts Studio Hosts Inaugural Halloween Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Welcome Stranger Aerial Spectacular Offers Haunting Performances on October 19 & 20 \n  \nSAN LUIS OBISPO\, CA (October 2\, 2018) – Levity® Academy\, San Luis Obispo\, a new 1\,250-square-foot aerial silks and circus arts studio offering students and artists a full schedule of aerial arts classes for all ages and skill levels\, announces its inaugural studio performance on Friday\, October 19 and Saturday\, October 20\, 2018. Welcome Stranger Aerial Spectacular begins at 7 p.m. each night (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) and features a demonic MC as well as local performers dancing across the ceiling to thrilling and chilling aerial silks\, rope\, lyra (aerial hoop) and other acrobatic acts set to spooky\, Halloween themes and music. \nLevity® Academy owners recommend the show for mature audiences only\, due to the dark nature of the theme. \n“This will be the first in studio production for Levity® Academy\,” says Co-Owner Gigi Penton\, “so we are very excited to invite SLO County audiences behind the curtain for a stunning show with an intimate cast of performers. Welcome Stranger Aerial Spectacular will really demonstrate the depth of aerial talent here at the studio as well as introduce guests to the fresh\, inviting aerial arts space at Levity® Academy.” \nThe recently remodeled warehouse space opened its doors in June 2018 to reveal a bright\, elegant studio featuring a clean\, white backdrop with natural wood and earth-tone accents. Large indoor plants and minimalist décor give the space a serene\, elevated vibe. “Although\,” Penton says\, “for this show\, we will definitely stage the space with creepy Halloween decorations and spooky lighting.” For the Welcome Stranger Aerial Spectacular\, she explains\, seating will also be arranged throughout the studio so that audiences will be fully immersed in the chilling performances. \nWelcome Stranger also offers audiences a peek into Levity® Academy’s curriculum. The studio offers a spectrum of classes based on age and ability so that youth\, teens\, and adults can feel comfortable and learn with their peers. Gigi explains that classes are led by highly-trained teachers with more than 20 years of combined aerial experience. \n“We also know what it’s like to be a beginner\, a mom\, a former dancer\, or someone who’s stepping out of their comfort zone. There’s a lot of empathy and encouragement.” \nLevity Academy is located at 207 Suburban Road in San Luis Obispo. Doors open for the show at 6:30 p.m. each night\, and acts begin at 7 p.m. Tickets ($22) can be purchased online at https://my805tix.com/organizations/levity-avademy to guarantee chair seating.
