SUMMARY:Scary Poppins at The Great American Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: Wednesday through Friday at 7 p.m.\, Saturday at 3 and 7 p.m.\, and Sunday at 6 p.m. \nIt’s Super-Nanny-Gone-Ballistic-Expialidocious! The Great American Melodrama presents the hilarious musical spoof Scary Poppins\, opening September 20. \nScary Poppins tells the story of Jack and Jill Peabody (Ben Abbott and Annali Fuchs-Wackowski) who live in London with their widowed father\, Professor Peabody (Jeff Salsbury). He’s a nutty inventor with little time for his children. When he hires a nanny\, though\, the whole family gets more than they bargained for: instead of Mary Poppins\, they get her twin sister\, Scary Poppins! This Poppins is a frightening creature who arrives with creepy music\, mind control powers\, and a host of wacky friends. But when the evil Russian ambassador (Billy Breed) shows up\, it’s up to Scary to save the day. Written by Ben Millet\, with direction and choreography by Eric Hoit\, this show is full of outrageous characters\, hilarious song satires and pop culture references. It’s a “practically perfect” parody for the whole family! \nFollowing each performance of Scary Poppins is the Halloween Party Vaudeville Revue. It’s no trick\, this new revue is a treat! The talented performers of the Melodrama are hosting a special Halloween costume party. Everyone is invited to hear them sing spooky favorites\, tell corny jokes\, and dance the night away! The new revue is a hilarious send up the Halloween season. Rachel Tietz directs and Michael Wilkins provides musical direction and accompaniment. \nThe Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $21 to $28\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.

SUMMARY:The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Presents: Industry of the Ordinary: demo(cra)tic
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nABOUT THIS EXHIBITION:\nWhen I was a small boy\, my parents would take me on road trips to see interesting things. In my child’s mind\, they seemed to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the interesting. They had\, I imagined\, always known what they knew\, and their jobs as parents essentially entailed enumerating the many things that my mind should find wonder in. But I found so many of these experiences at the time to be oddly underwhelming. Instead\, I was struck by their wonder and enthusiasm – and I noted how they would turn to see if I was seeing the world they saw. \nIn time we must surely turn to our own children and\, pointing at some important object\, look to see if wonder has flickered across the faces of our charges. We wander through the world pointing\, counting\, and turning to the faces of the uninitiated. And slowly we come to know that no amount of castles can populate the imagination of a child. Theirs are minds of infinite wonder\, but they examine their lives as they find them. Their streets\, their friends\, their favorite trees to climb. Extraordinary things are beyond counting\, but the wonder that we pass on to the ones we love is an ordinary thing. And no less precious for it. \nThis exhibition is about wandering as a child might. \nABOUT INDUSTRY OF THE ORDINARY:\nThrough sculpture\, text\, photography\, video and performance\, Industry of the Ordinary (IOTO) are dedicated to an exploration and celebration of the customary\, the everyday\, and the usual. Their emphasis is on challenging pejorative notions of the ordinary and\, in doing so\, moving beyond the quotidian. \nMaking use of a variety of art-making strategies\, IOTO have primarily been concerned with the dynamics and aesthetics of public and performative spaces. Drawing inspiration from Joseph Beuys’s theory of ‘social sculpture’ and the Situationists\, IOTO have explored non-traditional sites for art works where accidental audiences can be found. Often collaborating with multiple members of the community\, these works attempt to occupy and invigorate public thoroughfares. The work is intended to provoke and promote public discourse\, to bring fine art out of the gallery or performing arts venue\, and\, without becoming didactic or pedantic\, make it readily available to the non-art-trained audience. \nIndustry of the Ordinary were formed in 2003. The two artists who make up this collaborative team\, Adam Brooks and Mathew Wilson\, have long histories as visual and performative artists. They bring complementary sensibilities to their activities. \nTheir projects exist in temporal terms but have also been conceived to function on the web site associated with the collaboration\, http://www.industryoftheordinary.com.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly ROTC to Host Regional 2018 Ranger Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly will host a competition that seeks to make military leaders today who can lead change tomorrow. This weekend\, 11 ROTC programs from California schools — every ROTC program in the Golden State except UC Davis and UC Berkeley — and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas program will arrive at Camp SLO and compete with nine-person cadet teams in a grueling series of tactical and physical challenges. In addition to planning\, organizing and executing this year’s event\, Cal Poly ROTC will field an outstanding cadet team. The competition begins at 6 a.m. Saturday and continues through the night with land navigation competition in the dark. \nParticipation in Ranger Challenge offers cadets an opportunity to learn and practice skills beyond those instructed in class and during labs. Events include: an obstacle course; weapon qualification using the M-16 rifle; crossing the Chorro Reservoir in Zodiac boats; leader reaction course; day-and-night-land navigation; calling for and directing artillery; and moving/treating a casualty during a chemical attack — all while carrying 35-pound ruck sacks. Between each event \,the teams will be required to “ruck march” a total distance of 12 miles. \n  \nContact Ken Harris at 805-756-7690 (office) or 805-258-3357 (cell) for more information.

And if it’s raining\, mud will be fun! \nParticipants may either be Zombies\, Survivors\, or Both.  Zombies may come in full costume or if needed there is zombification available for a suggested small donation (old\, ripped clothing is best to wear as it may become stained.)  Event shirt\, bag\, and goodies for participants.  Each survivor starts with three flags and to ensure survival must keep these flags. (Green flags – zombies LOVE these\, yellow flags – zombies walk to catch\, red flags – zombies eat only if you get too close to them.) But\, if you survive – you’ll help the world move on! SUMMARY:Fremont Theater Presents: Beats Antique
DESCRIPTION:Beats Antique returns to The Fremont Theater in downtown SLO on Saturday\, October 27! Special guest\, Balkan Bump\, will open the show. \nTickets On-Sale NOW! \n♦ SHOW INFORMATION ♦ \nDoor Time- 8:30 PM \nShow Time- 9:00 PM \nAll Ages \n♦ TICKET OUTLET ♦ \nBoo Boo Records \n978 Monterey St • SLO \nMon-Wed 10-8\, Thurs-Sat 10-9\, Sun 11-6 \n♦ BAND INFORMATION ♦ \nIt’s impossible to describe Beats Antique using just a single genre. One listen to their forthcoming album\, Shadowbox (released on their own Beats Antique Records imprint)\, and their unique hybrid of sound makes perfect sense; their ability to blend so many different kinds of music in to an incredibly vibrant\, distinctive and peerless album is what this band has been doing for the past ten years. \nBased in Oakland\, California\, Sidecar Tommy\, David Satori and Zoe Jakes make up Beats Antique\, who released their 10th album on October 5th 2016 to commemorate their tenth year as a band. They’ve mounted a larger-than-life cross-country tour that will take their vision to theaters across America. “Shadowbox is both the title of our new album\, the theme of our tour\, and our new store front in Berkeley CA. We decided to bring it all together on this release.“ \nMostly recorded at their studio in Oakland (which has been around since the 50s)\, the Bay Area band also recorded in Russia and Israel. “We were lucky to record in both Moscow and Tel Aviv\, because we had shows there and wanted to connect with the local artists. We had amazing sessions in both locations; In Moscow we recorded on the outskirts of the city in a wild Industrial complex. We ended up going through strange corridors into this plush bamboo-floored-Hare-Krishna-owned recording studio with state of the art gear. When we were in Tel Aviv\, we gave a call to a local legend Yossi Fine and he helped us get time at Pluto Studios\, which is one of the best in the city. We recorded with Talya Solan and her amazing group of musicians. We used elements of the Tel Aviv session to create our track “Bdna Salam\,” which is raising money for Syrian refugees.” Along with Talya other features on Shadowbox include Lafa Taylor\, Alam Khan\, Tatiana Kalmykova\, brasshouse trio Too Many Zooz (who are touring with Beats Antique)\, Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, Dana Elle\, Madoline Tasquin and Medium Troy Orchestra. \nShadowbox is a retrospective of sorts\, with Beats Antique pulling from all of their previous work as almost a homage to the first ten years of their career. “This will be our first full album produced in Beats Antique’s recording studio/dance performance space. We feel like Shadowbox touches on all our styles from down-temp Middle Eastern influences to cinematic orchestral arrangements. The songwriting process is also different for every song. Sometimes David will come in with a melody and Sidecar will add the bass and beats\, and vise versa. One thing that always makes the songwriting process unique is that Zoe creates and arranges music based around stories she wants to tell though dance\, so sometimes the performance aspect influences the creation of the music.” \nIn June\, the group premiered the first single\, “Killer Bee\,” featuring Lafa Taylor\, on Billboard.com. The track is “about standing up to prejudices. Just because someone calls you a killer bee\, doesn’t mean you need to kill. We want people to define themselves and not be defined by what people think they should be.” In addition to being a ‘killer’ track\, with a compelling music video directed by Kyrian Bobeerian\, Beats Antique donated a percentage of the proceeds from their July 1st show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre to The Honeybee Conservancy\, a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of bees. \nAn enthusiastic touring band\, a new album also means a new tour\, and since Beats Antique is all about the ‘concept\,’ Shadowbox (the album and the idea) is another opportunity for them to get the creative juices flowing for the live shows. The band plan to use shadows\, light\, Indonesian shadow puppetry\, custom-created lanterns\, dance\, story telling\, crowd participation and more to make sure this is an unforgettable visual spectacle\nfor their audience. \nShadowbox\, an album that is an amalgamation of the history of Beats Antique\, merged with a tour that will both tease and excite the senses\, shows off what this band does best – transform\, innovate and revolutionize what you think you know about music. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
