SUMMARY:The Great American Melodrama Presents: THE HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA
DESCRIPTION:November 15 – December 31 \nNo holiday season on the Central Coast is complete without seeing The Holiday Extravaganza\, at the Great American Melodrama in Oceano. The annual production features the timeless classic A Christmas Carol\, a hilarious fractured fairytale\, and a vaudeville revue featuring the song\, dance\, and comedy of the season. Whether you’ve been naughty or nice\, The Holiday Extravaganza is a perfect for any holiday wish list.  \n  \nThe show opens with a one-act version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol\, directed by Melodrama Artistic Director Dan Schultz. Miserly Ebenezer Scrooge (Billy Breed)\, who thinks Christmas is a “humbug\,” is visited by spirits who teach him the true meaning of the holiday season. These magical encounters lead to heart-warming scenes of redemption\, punctuated with songs and laughter. \n  \nFollowing A Christmas Carol is the comedic operetta Rapunzel\, or Hair Today\, Gone Tomorrow by Eric Hoit and Marian Partee. This hysterical musical lark\, directed by Hoit\, follows Rapunzel (Annali Fuchs Wackowski) and a wacky cast of characters as they let their hair down. They sing classical music with fractured-fairy tale lyrics in a 30-minute production sure to delight one and all. \n  \nThe evening concludes with the company’s traditional vaudeville revue. This year’s show is based on children’s letters to Santa Claus. Enjoy musical numbers like the ever-popular “Reindeer Rap\,” the famous Water Glass Orchestra\, and Five Golden Rings Chorale. Musical direction and accompaniment for The Holiday Extravaganza is provided by Mike Wilkins with choreography by Sydni Abenido and Zach Johnson.  \n  \nMany performances are added to the Melodrama’s regular schedule to accommodate demand for this Central Coast favorite. A performance calendar can be found at www.americanmelodrama.com//show-calendar. This is the Melodrama’s most popular show of the season\, and tickets are sure to sell out soon. The Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $26 and $30\, with discounts available for seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. \n  \nThe Melodrama also announces that their affordable 2019 season subscriptions are on sale now. The theatre is offering a slate of seven comedies\, musicals\, and melodramas – all followed by ever-popular vaudeville revues. The complete lineup will be available at www.americanmelodrama.com/2019-season. Those purchasing passes to all seven shows receive a 30% discount off of the top ticket price. \n  \nFor more information and to purchase tickets or passes\, call the Melodrama Box Office at 805-489-2499\, or visit their website at www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975. \n

SUMMARY:Cal Poly to Co-Host Health Soils Project Demonstration Field Day
DESCRIPTION:SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly will co-host a demonstration field day on compost application in vineyards\, to be held 9 a.m. to noon Thursday\, Nov. 29\, at J. Lohr Vineyards in Paso Robles. \n  \nPresenters will discuss compost use from a variety of perspectives and showcase the types of soil monitoring taking place at J. Lohr Vineyards as part of a three-year project funded by a $200\,000 grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Healthy Soils Program. The project will demonstrate the potential for vineyard soils to capture and store carbon through the use of appropriate land management practices. \n  \nAn interdisciplinary team of Cal Poly professors and Central Coast vineyards have partnered to study the effects of compost application and no-till methods on soil carbon and greenhouse gas emissions relevant to the production of wine grapes on the Central Coast. Cal Poly’s Center for Sustainability\, the Horticulture and Crop Science Department\, and the Wine and Viticulture Department are collaborating with the Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department on the research\, taking place at two vineyards in Paso Robles — J. Lohr Vineyards and Tablas Creek Vineyard — over a three-year period. \n  \nThe free field day\, open to all agricultural professionals\, is being co-hosted by Cal Poly and the Vineyard Team\, an Atascadero-based organization dedicated to sustainable farming through research\, education and grower-to-grower networking. J. Lohr Vineyards is located at 6169 Airport Road in Paso Robles. For more information about the event\, visit: www.vineyardteam.org/events. \n  \nThe CDFA Healthy Soils Program will begin soliciting grant applications for its next round of funds in November. Growers interested in applying for their own Healthy Soils Program grant will be provided information about the application process for the incentives program at the Nov. 29 healthy soils field day. \n  \nAbout the CDFA Healthy Soils Program \nThe Healthy Soils Program (HSP) has funded the implementation of soil health practices on 8\,610 acres of farm and ranchland throughout California. These projects are estimated to collectively sequester 18\,683 metric tons of CO2e annually\, or the equivalent of removing 4\,000 cars from the road each year. Learn more at www.cdfa.ca.gov/oefi/healthysoils/. \nAbout the Center for Sustainability \nThe Cal Poly Center for Sustainability (www.cfs.calpoly.edu) is a cross-disciplinary initiative in the College of Agriculture\, Food and Environmental Sciences dedicated to advancing education on sustainable food and agricultural systems through curriculum\, professional development and on-farm education.
