SUMMARY:Steel Magnolia's at the Great American Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:One of the country’s most popular plays is set to premier at the Great American Melodrama in Oceano: Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias. This charming comedy about the bonds of friendship spawned the popular Oscar-nominated film version and follows the same story. “It’s a delightful play to open our season with. It’s so funny\, so well-written\, and the best actors wanted to work on the project\,” said Melodrama Artistic Director Dan Schultz. \nSet in Louisiana in the 1980’s\, Steel Magnolias is the tale of six Southern women who gather under the hair dryers of their local salon to gossip\, laugh\, and share stories and insults. Full of big characters\, big hair\, and big laughs\, the events turn serious when the group shares a tragic loss. You’ll fall in love with these women who are “delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.” Directed by Robyne Parrish\, and featuring Suzy Newman (M’Lynn)\, Patty Thayer (Clairee)\, Katie Worley Beck (Annelle)\, Eleise Moore (Truvy)\, Bonner Church (Ouiser) and Rebecca Tucker (Shelby)\, the show is sure to delight audiences from across the Central Coast. \nFollowing each performance of Steel Magnolias is the brand new vaudeville revue\, The Queens of Comedy. It’s a hilarious tribute to your favorite comediennes from the last 100 years. Featuring song\, dance\, and comedy\, the Queens of Comedy is a perfect capper to an evening of incredible live theatre. It’s directed by Sarah Wussow and features choreography by Katie Fuchs Wackowski. \nThese shows play January 24 – March 10. Performances are Thursday and Fridays at 7 pm\, Saturdays at 3 and 7 pm\, and Sundays at 6 pm. The Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Tickets are $23 to $30\, with discounts available for groups\, seniors\, students\, active military\, and children. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. Come see they’re brand new box office building across from the theatre\, you can’t miss it.  The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.

SUMMARY:Save Our Seas Ride Across America
DESCRIPTION:The Central Coast Aquarium\, Bike SLO County\, and ECOSLO are teaming up to present “How Biking Helps Oceans and Animals” on Tuesday\, February 26\, 7:00 p.m. in the Large Conference Room at RRM\, 3765 South Higuera Street\, #102\, San Luis Obispo. (Entrance is on Hind Lane.) \nThis interactive talk is tailored for all ages and will be presented by Tim Oey\, retired engineer\, father of two\, passionate bike advocate\, and aquarium enthusiast\, on a stop over during his 4\,500 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Boston to raise awareness about ocean plastic pollution as well as bike safety. Oey’s cross-country journey includes visiting over two dozen aquariums to connect with people and encourage reduced use of plastics that make their way into the ocean killing marine life and\, eventually\, ending up in our own food chain. Oey’s goal is to have 90 talks in 90 days during his three month bike ride across the U.S. Oey explains that he’s visiting aquariums along his route because “oceans are difficult for people to explore and understand but aquariums bring oceans to people so they can learn about their wonders and how critical they are for life on earth. “ \nOey is the founder of ZeroW.org\, a nonprofit to help people learn to tread more lightly on the earth and pursue zero waste. He states that “bicycling is one of the most impactful ways to go zero waste and it’s fun!” In addition\, Oey is a League Cycling Instructor certified by the League of American Bicyclists. About his adventure\, Oey states\, “People are powerful. We have changed the world in many ways already and we have the power to improve our world. Connecting with each other is key to working together\, which is why I’m doing this ride. Together we can do it.” \nFor more information about “Save Our Seas Ride Across America\,” visit www.zerow.org. \nFor more information about the event in SLO\, please contact CCA’s Executive Director\, Christine Johnson\, Christine@centralcoastaquarium.com or #805-595-7280\, ext. 1002. \n  \n  \nAbout the Central Coast Aquarium\nFor 25 years\, the Central Coast Aquarium (CCA)\, located in Avila Beach\, has been providing unique hands-on learning\nopportunities to children and adults in the fields of Marine Biology and Oceanography\, as well as local history.
