SUMMARY:Steel Magnolia's at the Great American Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:One of the country’s most popular plays is set to premier at the Great American Melodrama in Oceano: Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias. This charming comedy about the bonds of friendship spawned the popular Oscar-nominated film version and follows the same story. “It’s a delightful play to open our season with. It’s so funny\, so well-written\, and the best actors wanted to work on the project\,” said Melodrama Artistic Director Dan Schultz. \nSet in Louisiana in the 1980’s\, Steel Magnolias is the tale of six Southern women who gather under the hair dryers of their local salon to gossip\, laugh\, and share stories and insults. Full of big characters\, big hair\, and big laughs\, the events turn serious when the group shares a tragic loss. You’ll fall in love with these women who are “delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.” Directed by Robyne Parrish\, and featuring Suzy Newman (M’Lynn)\, Patty Thayer (Clairee)\, Katie Worley Beck (Annelle)\, Eleise Moore (Truvy)\, Bonner Church (Ouiser) and Rebecca Tucker (Shelby)\, the show is sure to delight audiences from across the Central Coast. \nFollowing each performance of Steel Magnolias is the brand new vaudeville revue\, The Queens of Comedy. It’s a hilarious tribute to your favorite comediennes from the last 100 years. Featuring song\, dance\, and comedy\, the Queens of Comedy is a perfect capper to an evening of incredible live theatre. It’s directed by Sarah Wussow and features choreography by Katie Fuchs Wackowski. \nThese shows play January 24 – March 10. Performances are Thursday and Fridays at 7 pm\, Saturdays at 3 and 7 pm\, and Sundays at 6 pm. The Melodrama’s in-house snack bar features great food and drinks served before the show and during intermissions. Castillo will appear for a presentation and book-signing event at the Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center (CPAC). \nGeneral admission tickets for the public ($15) are now on sale at tickets.cuesta.edu. Tickets for Cuesta students are free; RSVP at cuestabook@gmail.com. \nCastillo will also lead a classroom discussion with Cuesta College’s North County Campus students in Paso Robles. \nThe memoir includes a collection of essays that offer an intimate look at pivotal experiences in Castillo’s life across three generations: the relationship between Castillo and her immigrant mother\, Castillo’s own challenges as a single mother to her son\, and her childhood memories of growing up in the Mexican barrios of Chicago.\n“Leading up to the March event\, free cultural activities—films\, dance performances\, art workshops—will take place throughout the county\,” said Book of the Year Program Coordinator Carina Love. Film screenings of John Leguizamo’s humorous hit Latin History for Morons will be held on both Cuesta College campuses and the documentary The Latino List at local public libraries. About author Ana Castillo: Born in Chicago\, Castillo is a novelist\, poet\, short story writer\, essayist\, editor\, playwright\, translator and independent scholar. Castillo received her MA in Latin American Studies from the University of Chicago\, after teaching ethnic studies at Santa Rosa Junior College. \nConsidered one of the leading voices in Chicana experience\, Castillo is known for her experimental styles as a Latina novelist. Castillo has written more than 15 books and numerous articles and is widely regarded as a key thinker and a pioneer in the field of Chicana literature. Her novel Sapogonia was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. She has attained numerous awards\, including an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation for her first novel\, The Mixquiahuala Letters\, a Carl Sandburg Award\, a Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award\, a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in fiction and poetry and in 1998 Sor Juana Achievement Award by the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum in Chicago. \nThe Book of the Year Program is a project of Cuesta College’s Academic Senate in partnership with San Luis Obispo County Public Library SLO Reads.
