SUMMARY:Southern Pacific's Coastline Comes to San Luis Obispo
DESCRIPTION:From this (construction of the line into SLO) \nTo this (30 years later)\n \n\n\n\nSouthern Pacific’s Coastline Comes to San Luis Obispo\nSaturday\, May 4\, 2019\, 11am \n1894 was a banner year for San Luis Obispo. The extension of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Coastline route from San Francisco meant San Luis Obispo and other coastal communities finally had an efficient physical link to northern (and to southern California seven years later) that could be accomplished in under 12 hours. The connection created nearly immediate effects on growth\, local economies and changed social and cultural expectations as well. \nThe emphasis of this Power-point presentation will be on the construction and operation of the railroad in San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara Counties. Engineering obstacles\, operational conditions and historic insights are included as well as an overview of the equipment and the character of operating a railroad in a somewhat difficult territory. \nMay 4th 2019 marks the 125th anniversary of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s arrival into SLO. \nThe presentation is by Andrew Merriam\, railroad historian and board member of the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum. Andrew has been a resident of San Luis Obispo for 60 years.

SUMMARY:Cuesta College Presents Behind the Ides
DESCRIPTION:World Premiere \nA New Play by David Armstrong\nDirected by Joan Marie Hurwit \nFrom the perspective of box office call operators\, this new documentary-style play follows the very real backlash NYC’s The Public Theater received during the summer of 2017. Amidst a charged political climate\, they chose to portray the title character of Julius Caesar as the 45th president which brought on a firestorm of negative callers from around the U.S. This artistic choice sparked a conversation about the role & responsibility of art in politics and how it can be used to navigate deeply rooted divisiveness while maintaining our humanity. \nJoin us as we try to answer the age old and yet still very relevant question: How do we – the public – not let the few dictate the many? Most of the calls and voicemails you’ll hear in this production are verbatim; real people\, real concerns. Warnings include: graphic\, gratuitous language; descriptions of mutilation; swearing – PG 13 rating.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nEvery song is fresh.\nEvery scene is new.\nEvery night is different.\nIt’s all improvised\nand it’s all funny! \nDeb Rabbai\, Producer “It’s something like you’ve never seen before\, because nobody’s ever seen it before ” \nThe hilarious Broadway’s Next Hit Musical is the only unscripted theatrical awards show and stage musical. The cast is a team of some of the most talented and experienced improv comedians and musicians in New York City. \n \nThe first half of the show is a parody of a typical awards show. The cast takes fictional “hit song” suggestions from the audience. They improvise the lyrics and create an entirely spontaneous evening of music and laughs\, competing against each other to create the audience’s favorite song of the evening. \nThe audience votes for a winner\, and in the second half of the show\, the cast turns the winner’s song into a full-blown improvised musical\, complete with memorable characters\, witty dialogue\, and plot twists galore. \nBroadway’s Next Hit Musical has been seen recently at The Triad\, the Tribeca Film Festival\, and the New York Musical Theatre Festival. \nUnder the direction of improv veterans Rob Schiffman and Deb Rabbai\, the show was hailed by TheaterWeek as “brilliant”\, and the New York post called Broadway’s Next Hit Musical “remarkable”. \nDon’t miss the next great American musical – it could be written for you! \nWhat fake “Hit Song” title will YOU suggest? (Can’t be an actual song title.) \nNote: Only Family – friendly humor! \n\nReserved Seating: Gold-$48 Silver-$45 Bronze-$39*\nTickets available through Box Office ONLY until July 31.
