He states about his oversized paintings\, “Flower blossoms have been the promise before the fruit. It is nature’s way of announcing its unfolding power to create and to deliver future nourishment … flowers have done so for thousands of years. The diversity and large amounts of blossoms fill and overflow the formal ground to the max\, producing heighten feelings of positive human emotions of plenitude and abundance.” \nImmerse yourself in these splendid paintings at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden. All pieces are for sale\, and proceeds benefit the Garden. \nJuan Manuel Perez Salazar resides on the central coast\, where he is an avid artist and gardener. His work has been displayed in\, Mexico\, India\, and throughout California. His studio practice explores boundaries of painting and sculpture\, crossing and transposing various modes of styles in search of his own images. The experiential and cultural associations of specific subjects and materials fuels his exploration. Inspired by the symbolism and beauty of the natural world\, he utilizes blossoms to seduce the observer to take pleasure in watching flowers bloom. Inspired to compose what he gather with his senses in the garden; he often cuts his own flowers to serve as models. \nView more artist work at @JuanManuelPerezSalazar

SUMMARY:Drop-In Classes: Art Making for Stress Relief
DESCRIPTION:De-stress this summer and get your creative juices flowing with two drop-in classes with Judy Johnson-Williams.\n\nJune 22: Nature Journaling\nWant to get out in nature? Art blocked? This introductory class is about being attuned to the natural world and how to participate as an artist-scientist. We will sketch the wonderful bounty of plants and wildlife around the museum. Can’t draw? The first hour will feature friendly drawing instruction to get you started and there are many alternative techniques: tracing leaves\, rubbings\, and counting for noticing and recording what’s around us. Then we will go outside and see what we can find.\n\nJune 29: Make a Sketchbook\nBetter than buying one! You can make your own in the perfect size size (to fit in your backpack\, pocket)\, with the paper you like\, hard or soft covers. We will make three different book forms (stitched\, sidebound\, one sheet) and then take them outside to try them out. No experience necessary. \nAbout the Instructor\nJudy Johnson-Williams is an artist exploring line\, sometimes in the abstract\, and sometimes figurative. It is the expressiveness and adaptability of line to many forms that is interesting. She exhibits widely on the West Coast and is active in a number of art groups. Learn more by visiting her website. \nDetails\nSaturdays\, June 22 and 29 from 11 AM to 1 PM. Register online or at the door (space permitting). $25 members\, $29 general per class. All materials included. \nNot a SLOMA member? Join online and get discounts on workshops\, youth classes\, film nights\, trips\, and more!

SUMMARY:United Methodist Church Hosts The 2nd Annual Cal Poly High School Honor Choir Festival Concert
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 29\, 2019\n1 p.m.\, San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church\nFree \nHigh school singers from throughout the state will combine with Cal Poly singers for the second annual Cal Poly High School Honor Choir Festival Concert at 1 p.m. Saturday\, June 29\, at the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church. \nThis year\, the festival will feature a chamber women’s chorus of 16 singers. Established by Cal Poly Director of Choral Activities Scott Glysson\, the festival provides an opportunity for talented high school singers to perform great music alongside collegiate singers and work with accomplished conductors. \nStudents arrive Thursday\, June 27\, for the festival\, when they will check in and begin their stay at Cal Poly. Throughout the weekend they will take part in rehearsals\, live in campus housing and get a chance to experience some of the culture of San Luis Obispo. \n\nScott Glysson\, conductor; Meredith Brammeier\, soprano;\nPaul Woodring\, organ.  \n“The event is intended to give the students the full college experience and simulate what it is like to be a music major at Cal Poly\,” Glysson said. \nAs a part of the festival\, each singer will also receive a private lesson from one of Cal Poly’s world-class voice teachers. \nThe festival will culminate with a concert. The centerpiece of the concert will be the “Messe basse” by Gabriel Fauré. “This is a very simple and beautiful piece\, originally composed as a charitable collaboration with Fauré’s pupil André Messager\,” Glysson said. \nPaul Woodring will serve as the accompanist for the festival. The soprano soloist will be Cal Poly music professor Meredieth Brammeier\, who is also a composer. One of her works will be performed in the concert. \nGlysson will conduct the festival. As a conductor of university\, high school and community ensembles\, he has performed both nationally and internationally. On May 25\, he conducted Joseph Haydn’s “Te Deum” in Carnegie Hall\, and he’s been invited to conduct Mozart’s “Vesperae solennes de confessore\,” K. 339\, with the PanEuropean Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw\, Poland\, in June 2020. \nThis July\, he and six Cal Poly students will travel to Kenya. Glysson will lead a lead a choral conducting workshop in Nairobi from July 1-8 at the invitation of the Kenyan Government and Kenyatta University. \nThe June 29 concert will be in the sanctuary of the church at 1515 Fredericks St. The concert is free and open to the public; no tickets or advanced reservations are required. Donations will be accepted at the door to support the Cal Poly Choral Program. \nThe festival is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department\, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information\, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406 or visit its calendar website.
