SUMMARY:Cuesta College Presents: Julie Heffernan at the Miossi Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:11:00-4:00 Mondays through Fridays Only\n\n\n\nPosted: August 15\, 2019Written by: Elliot Peters\n\nSAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery on the San Luis Obispo campus will host Julie Heffernan’s art exhibit As the Waters Rise from August 29th to October 11th. Heffernan’s artwork aims to offer a surrealist vision of the environment around us and the human condition\, reflecting environmental awareness. \n“Heffernan’s recent paintings create alternative habitats in response to environmental disaster and planetary excess\,” says Emma Saperstein\, curator of the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery. “With rising waters\, [Heffernan] imagines worlds in trees or on rafts in which undulating mattresses\, tree boughs\, and road signs guide the journey.” \nThe opening reception for this exhibit will be held on August 29th from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with an Artist Talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. Heffernan will also host an informal sneak peek at 12:00 p.m. in the gallery. \nJulie Heffernan received her MFA in Painting from Yale and a BFA from the University of California\, Santa Cruz. Heffernan is in the collection of major museums including the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Heffernan is a Professor of Fine Arts at Montclair State University. \nThe Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is located in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. For a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation\, please visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202.

SUMMARY:San Luis Obispo Symphony presents Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony
DESCRIPTION:The San Luis Obispo Symphony proudly begins the 2019-2020 season with Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony. Our signature “Concerts in the Cohan” series opens with two brief but powerful symphonies that are sure to leave you breathless. \n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\nBe sure to arrive early for Symphonic Forays\, an intimate discussion with Music Director Andrew Sewell and special guests that precedes each concert. Learn more about the evening’s musical selection\, composers\, and soloists in an up-close-and-personal conversation. Seating is general admission and Symphonic Forays is FREE to all ticket holders! \n\n\n\n\n\nSYMPHONY NO. 8\nIn 1812\, Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827) composed his imaginative Symphony No. 8. Experimental and exuberant\, Beethoven’s “little Symphony in F” packs a lot into a relatively short period of time. Its four movements are rhythmic and dynamic\, and Beethoven chose to break with traditional format by excluding a slow movement. What results is a complicated\, uplifting\, and occasionally playful symphony – the perfect selection to launch an exciting new season. \nClick here to hear Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 > \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nA HERO’S LIFE (EIN HELDENLEBEN)\nFor Richard Strauss (1864-1949)\, nothing said heroism like a lot of horns – so\, when composing his symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben (“A Hero’s Life”)\, he made liberal use of them. The six symphony begins by introducing us to a hero\, and then crafting a story across six movements\, performed with no breaks between. The hero encounters adversaries\, shares a tender embrace with his companion\, engages in ferocious battle\, and finally finds peace\, retirement and contentment with a conclusion steeped in serenity. Panned by the same critics Strauss famously caricatured as the hero’s adversaries in the second movement\, Ein Heldenleben went on to become one of the most beloved and oft-performed symphonies around the globe. \nClick here to hear Strauss’ “A Hero’s Life” > \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPONSORED BY\nPacific Eye \nOPENING NIGHT RECEPTION SPONSORED BY\nCalPoly Arts\nSLO Symphony Board of Directors
