SUMMARY:Good Morning SLO | October
DESCRIPTION:A dynamic and informative 90-minute breakfast program geared to San Luis Obispo business people. Held the fourth Thursday of each month\, experts take on a wide variety of community and business topics. \nThis month’s sponsor: \n \nDeadline to register is 5 p.m. Oct. 22. If the program sells out\, we open a waiting list at the door at 7 a.m. and typically can accommodate everyone. \nThis month’s topics include: \nCAN YOU ALSO USE IT TO MAKE SOUP? \nIn Cal Poly professor Taufik’s native Indonesia\, most people live on remote islands with limited electricity. So his patent-pending invention combining low-power inputs into one stronger source could be a game-changer\, bringing light to more than a billion people living far off the grid. He’ll tell us more about the power of the device known as MISO. \n\nWE’VE COME A LONG WAY\, BABY \nSLO has been recognized as a great place for women-owned businesses. But just 30 years ago\, women couldn’t even take out a business loan on their own. In honor of National Women’s Small Business Month\, Lindsey McConaghy\, head of SLO’s National Association of Women Business Owners chapter\, will share progress and work still to be done. \n\nPLANNING FOR PLANNED OUTAGES \nThe Central Coast escaped the first round of planned power outages aimed at preventing wildfires. But we still face the prospect of several days without power sometime down the line. Former SLO City fire chief and co-founder of Resolute Associates Garret Olson will share guidance and top tips for preparing for an extended power outage. \n\nDISABILITY DOESN’T MEAN UN-EMPLOYABILITY \nFor the fifth year\, businesses that employ people with disabilities and those employees were recently celebrated in a awards ceremony. Making those partnerships work is an organization called PathPoint\, and we asked regional vice president April Lewallen to share some of the benefits and innovative collaborations behind the program. \n\nPASSING THE TORCH \nA new director of Leadership SLO (and Insight Studio) has been announced. But we can’t let long-time Leadership sage Sandi Sigurdson move on without some parting words of wisdom. Sandi’s legacy ripples far beyond the 360 or so Leadership SLO grads she’s shepherded and we’ll also take the opportunity to celebrate her many accomplishments. \n\nGETTING JAZZED WITH CUESTA VOCE \nThe Cuesta Voce jazz ensemble has been entertaining audiences far and wide for almost 40 years\, appearing at jazz festivals throughout the West Coast and Europe. As they prepare for their own Vocal Jazz Festival Nov. 8-9\, the dozen-plus members will get us jazzed up for the day with a medley of audience favorites.

SUMMARY:Mohamad Hafez Retrospective Art Exhibit at Cuesta College
DESCRIPTION:For its flagship show of the year\, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents a Retrospective exhibition by Syrian-American artist and architect Mohamad Hafez from Oct. 24 through Dec. 20. \nBorn in Damascus\, Hafez was raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and educated in the midwestern United States. His art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint\, and scrap metal. Using architectural skills\, he creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in appearance and politically charged in content. \nHafez’s work reflects his deep interest in the cross-disciplinary exploration of street art and realistic\, yet ironic sculptures. He purposefully infuses a stark contrast between the scenes he creates and the messages imbued in his work. Messages could include verses from the holy Qur’an\, audio recordings from his homeland\, or other elements of Islamic heritage reflected in the architectural typography. \n“It’s our biggest show of the year\,” said Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Coordinator Emma Saperstein. “It is a huge honor for the gallery to host Hafez’s very first retrospective in his career. The show will span over 20 years of his work and practice.” \nHafez’s artwork was recently featured in several highly acclaimed exhibitions. He is profiled in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The New Yorker\, and National Public Radio. Hafez is the recipient of the 2018 Connecticut Arts Hero Award for his extensive and continuous body of work on issues such as the Syrian civil war\, the worldwide refugee crisis\, and an overall desire to counter hate speech. \nRetrospective marks the first time Hafez’s artwork will be seen on the Central Coast. The opening reception is on Oct. 24 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. A sneak peek reception for students is at noon in the art gallery. A Syrian film screening and talk-back with Hafez will be held on Oct. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in Room 6304. \nThe Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202 for a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation.

SUMMARY:Sure Sure at SLO Brew Rock!
DESCRIPTION:SLO Brew Rock\n855 Aerovista Place\, San Luis Obispo\, CA\nOctober 24\, 2019\n7:30 pm  | Ages: 18+\n$16.00\n Buy Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\nSure Sure will be live at SLO Brew Rock on Thursday\, October 24! \nSure Sure is an art pop band from the Eastside of Los Angeles\, California. The highly prolific group has been releasing music since 2014 and has already amassed over 30 million combined streams. In addition to receiving praise for their songwriting and production skills\, Sure Sure has played over 150 shows in the past two years\, sharing the stage with artists such as Young The Giant\, Hippo Campus\, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise. \n  \nChris\, Charlie\, Kevin\, and Mike self-produce all their music in their house-turned-studio – a myriad of instruments positioned throughout the attic\, with cables snaking down the walls to the recording console in the producer’s bedroom. Sure Sure’s recordings and infectious live show have quickly solidified them as one of the most exciting up and coming bands out of Southern California. \nMike describes the bands sound as a mix between Steely Dan and the Talking Heads\, “we take inspiration from The Beatles\, D’Angelo\, and Feist among other artists that I can’t remember right now.” \nThe band has achieved multiple number ones on the Hype Machine charts and gained praise from Grizzly Bear\, Rostam of Vampire Weekend\, and other staples in the indie music community. Summer 2019 found the band releasing a new EP What’s It Like?\, playing a select set of dates\, and locking the door to their house to record new music.
