SUMMARY:Mohamad Hafez Retrospective Art Exhibit at Cuesta College
DESCRIPTION:For its flagship show of the year\, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents a Retrospective exhibition by Syrian-American artist and architect Mohamad Hafez from Oct. 24 through Dec. 20. \nBorn in Damascus\, Hafez was raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and educated in the midwestern United States. His art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint\, and scrap metal. Using architectural skills\, he creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in appearance and politically charged in content. \nHafez’s work reflects his deep interest in the cross-disciplinary exploration of street art and realistic\, yet ironic sculptures. He purposefully infuses a stark contrast between the scenes he creates and the messages imbued in his work. Messages could include verses from the holy Qur’an\, audio recordings from his homeland\, or other elements of Islamic heritage reflected in the architectural typography. \n“It’s our biggest show of the year\,” said Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Coordinator Emma Saperstein. “It is a huge honor for the gallery to host Hafez’s very first retrospective in his career. The show will span over 20 years of his work and practice.” \nHafez’s artwork was recently featured in several highly acclaimed exhibitions. He is profiled in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The New Yorker\, and National Public Radio. Hafez is the recipient of the 2018 Connecticut Arts Hero Award for his extensive and continuous body of work on issues such as the Syrian civil war\, the worldwide refugee crisis\, and an overall desire to counter hate speech. \nRetrospective marks the first time Hafez’s artwork will be seen on the Central Coast. The opening reception is on Oct. 24 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. A sneak peek reception for students is at noon in the art gallery. A Syrian film screening and talk-back with Hafez will be held on Oct. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in Room 6304. \nThe Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202 for a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation.

The 21-year-old from Gilroy\, California plans to attend graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in botany after she graduates in the spring. \n“Being a part of the succulent team has helped me grow tremendously\,” Funke said. “We have the opportunity to work directly in nursery production in an environment where we are able to test new propagation techniques and production skills. It has been an amazing experience\, and I am excited to continue to work with my team to test and grow new varieties of succulents and cacti.” \nThe cost of the plants will range from $4.50 to $7 for 4-inch plants. Larger plants are priced accordingly\, mostly below $12; 6-inch succulent gardens are $12.50; and 8-inch succulent gardens are $25. SUMMARY:Cal Poly Choirs Preview Concert "Cry Out!"
DESCRIPTION: The Cal Poly Choirs will present a season preview concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday\, Oct. 26\, in the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church. \n  \nTitled “Cry Out\,” the concert celebrates the choral tradition of passionate and powerful singing\, said Scott Glysson\, director of choral activities. Choral music is full of bold exclamations of faith\, love\, fear\, hope and a wide variety of human emotions. \n  \nAll four Cal Poly choral groups will perform: PolyPhonics\, University Singers\, the Women’s Chorus and Chamber Choir. These groups\, as well as several soloists\, will give the audience a taste of what is to come for the numerous 2019-20 choral concerts. \n  \nPolyPhonics\, the university’s premier choir\, will perform John Mackey’s “Rumor of a Secret King\,” an exciting and rhythmically complex work commissioned for the Eric Whitacre Singers in 2017. A beautiful setting of the William Blake poem “The Lamb” by Kim André Arnesen — a popular modern Norwegian composer — will also be performed. \n  \nThe Women’s Chorus will begin its second year since being formed with selections from the famous “Ceremony of Carols” by Benjamin Britten. The group is comprised of 45 highly skilled and experienced choral singers. \n  \nThe Chamber Choir — the nucleus of the annual Cal Poly Bach Week — will perform a selection from J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor\, which is the grand finale piece for Bach Week in January. The University Singers will perform a delightful lesser-known “Magnificat” setting by J.S. Bach’s son\, C.P.E. Bach. \n  \nSeveral vocal solos will highlight the diversity and skill of the department’s vocal performance majors. \n  \nPaul Woodring is the accompanist for the choirs. Glysson conducts the choirs. Glysson conducted in New York at Carnegie Hall in May and in Nairobi\, Kenya\, in July and has upcoming conducting engagements in France\, Bulgaria and Poland. \n  \nTickets are $14 for the public and $9 for students. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. on Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849). Tickets will also be sold at the door the night of the concert. \n  \nA 10 percent discount is given to patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events. \n  \nThe concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department\, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information\, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406 or visit its calendar website.

SUMMARY:SLO Blues Society presents\, Café R&B
DESCRIPTION:7:00 – Doors Open\n7:30 – Burning James & The Funky Flames\n8:45 – Cafe R & B – featured headliner band\nCafe R&B\, featuring vocalist “Roach” and her guitar-slinging husband Byl Carruthers\, have been wowing audiences throughout America\, Canada\, and Europe\, since they were first discovered in Los Angeles by the likes of Ike Turner and Buddy Guy in the late 90’s… After seeing the band at L.A.’s famed Troubadour nightclub\, Ike Turner exclaimed: \n“I ain’t seen nuthin’ like that since Me and You-Know-Who!” \nBuddy Guy heard about the commotion\, and invited the band to his Southside Chicago club where\, opening for blues legend Otis Rush\, the band received a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd. They were soon recognized as a force to be reckoned with\, leaving a trail of incendiary performances\, as they shared stages with Etta James\, Little Feat\, The Black Crowes\, and Bettye LaVette\, to name a few. They gained a reputation as one of the most exciting live acts in blues and beyond. \nSoon they were in the studio recording the first of their four critically acclaimed albums\, and spreading their message throughout the U.S. and Europe\, one stage at a time. Encountering Roach and the band’s blisteringly contemporary skills\, wrapped around such a deeply reverent passion for the real blues\, critics raved… \n“This is a group that knows its material better than most people know themselves…” \n“Stunned is not a strong enough word to describe what they did to the audience…” \n“She is fearless -a torch in a Holy Roller’s body!” \nWhile firmly rooted in the Blues\, theirs is a tapestry of Blues\, Jazz\, Rock\, R&B\, and every other stitch in the fabric of American Music. As Blues Historian Dick Shurman put it: “No one ever forgets the first time they see CAFE R&B” \nNow in Summer/Fall 2019\, after staying close to home in California for a few years\, while Roach and Byl’s son finished school\, CAFE R&B will be releasing their long-awaited 5th Album and heading back out on tour throughout  the U.S. and Europe. And your SLO Blues Society has called in many many favors to bring in this high energy group to wow the Central Coast! \nAdvance Tickets for this kick up your heels show may be purchased in SLO at Boo Boo Records and Cheap Thrills\, in Santa Maria at Paradise Records\, or online at My805tix. Day-Of Tickets are also available at the door.
