SUMMARY:Mohamad Hafez Retrospective Art Exhibit at Cuesta College
DESCRIPTION:For its flagship show of the year\, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents a Retrospective exhibition by Syrian-American artist and architect Mohamad Hafez from Oct. 24 through Dec. 20. \nBorn in Damascus\, Hafez was raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and educated in the midwestern United States. His art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint\, and scrap metal. Using architectural skills\, he creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in appearance and politically charged in content. \nHafez’s work reflects his deep interest in the cross-disciplinary exploration of street art and realistic\, yet ironic sculptures. He purposefully infuses a stark contrast between the scenes he creates and the messages imbued in his work. Messages could include verses from the holy Qur’an\, audio recordings from his homeland\, or other elements of Islamic heritage reflected in the architectural typography. \n“It’s our biggest show of the year\,” said Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Coordinator Emma Saperstein. “It is a huge honor for the gallery to host Hafez’s very first retrospective in his career. The show will span over 20 years of his work and practice.” \nHafez’s artwork was recently featured in several highly acclaimed exhibitions. He is profiled in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The New Yorker\, and National Public Radio. Hafez is the recipient of the 2018 Connecticut Arts Hero Award for his extensive and continuous body of work on issues such as the Syrian civil war\, the worldwide refugee crisis\, and an overall desire to counter hate speech. \nRetrospective marks the first time Hafez’s artwork will be seen on the Central Coast. The opening reception is on Oct. 24 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. A sneak peek reception for students is at noon in the art gallery. A Syrian film screening and talk-back with Hafez will be held on Oct. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in Room 6304. \nThe Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202 for a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation.

SUMMARY:SLOMA Presents: Painting the Inner and Outer Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Painting the Inner and Outer Landscape\nDate: Oct 29 2019 – Oct 31 2019 \n\nwith Adam Wolpert \nDESCRIPTION\nOverview\nPainting out of doors is a profound experience\, one that engages all of our senses\, our minds and our spirits. Faced with nature’s dynamic forces we are challenged to develop visual sensitivity\, flexibility and resilience. We come into deeper relationship with the world and with ourselves when we open to the living landscape around us. We begin to see the world as never before and our paintings give evidence of that new vision. \nThis workshop will invite both intermediate and experienced painters to immerse themselves in landscape painting. Daily sessions will be devoted to painting rapid sketches and more developed small oil paintings out of doors. Basic oil technique\, instruction in setting up a palette\, mixing colors and brushwork will be balanced with a slide lecture on visual theory\, composition and special issues in landscape painting. Workshop participants will learn from individual instruction and each other and have opportunities to share their paintings and experiences in a supportive environment. The spectacular beauty of the SLO area provides the perfect setting to explore this exciting practice. \nAbout the Instructor\nA passionate artist from an early age\, Adam Wolpert explored the media of performance\, ceramics\, sculpture\, and collage before turning seriously to painting while earning his BFA from the University of California Santa Barbara. After a rigorous 2-year training in classical realism at Studio Cecil-Graves in Florence\, Italy\, where he immersed himself in the work of the great European masters\, Wolpert completed an MFA at UC San Diego. He has had major gallery representation since 1988\, including many solo exhibitions and group shows and 18 years with the Jan Baum Gallery in Los Angeles. Wolpert co-founded the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center in 1994 and has taught and lectured extensively throughout California. Learn more about Adam Wolpert’s artwork at www.adamwolpert.com. \nDetails\nWednesday\, October 29 to Friday\, October 31\, 2019 (rare midweek workshop!). 9 AM — 4 PM with breaks. First day meets at SLOMA\, and then in spots around SLO County for plein air painting. \nRegistration $300 members\, $325 general. Materials list online. Plein air easels required.\nPlease register by Friday\, October 18\, 2019. Call SLOMA at 805-543-8562 to register over the phone. \nIn consideration of our instructors\, please review our cancelation policy: Students must pay in full at time of enrollment. Refunds may be requested up to 30 days prior to the workshop date and will be processed minus a $100 cancelation fee. No refunds will be granted after the 30 day mark.
