SUMMARY:Mohamad Hafez Retrospective Art Exhibit at Cuesta College
DESCRIPTION:For its flagship show of the year\, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents a Retrospective exhibition by Syrian-American artist and architect Mohamad Hafez from Oct. 24 through Dec. 20. \nBorn in Damascus\, Hafez was raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and educated in the midwestern United States. His art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint\, and scrap metal. Using architectural skills\, he creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in appearance and politically charged in content. \nHafez’s work reflects his deep interest in the cross-disciplinary exploration of street art and realistic\, yet ironic sculptures. He purposefully infuses a stark contrast between the scenes he creates and the messages imbued in his work. Messages could include verses from the holy Qur’an\, audio recordings from his homeland\, or other elements of Islamic heritage reflected in the architectural typography. \n“It’s our biggest show of the year\,” said Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Coordinator Emma Saperstein. “It is a huge honor for the gallery to host Hafez’s very first retrospective in his career. The show will span over 20 years of his work and practice.” \nHafez’s artwork was recently featured in several highly acclaimed exhibitions. He is profiled in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The New Yorker\, and National Public Radio. Hafez is the recipient of the 2018 Connecticut Arts Hero Award for his extensive and continuous body of work on issues such as the Syrian civil war\, the worldwide refugee crisis\, and an overall desire to counter hate speech. \nRetrospective marks the first time Hafez’s artwork will be seen on the Central Coast. The opening reception is on Oct. 24 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. A sneak peek reception for students is at noon in the art gallery. A Syrian film screening and talk-back with Hafez will be held on Oct. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in Room 6304. \nThe Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202 for a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation.

SUMMARY:Great American Melodrama Presents: A Great Big Concert Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock
DESCRIPTION:Melodrama Presents Woodstock Concert Series this November  \nKnown for producing side-splitting comedies\, the Great American Melodrama is doing something a little different for its next production. The little theatre in Oceano is presenting a great big concert commemorating the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. Featuring some of the Central Coast’s most popular bands\, this concert is sure to be a hit this fall. “A few local bands wanted to put together a cool show\, and we have a great venue; this felt like a perfect fit\,” Melodrama Artistic Director Dan Schultz said. \nIn 1969\, more than a half million people came to Max Yasgur’s dairy farm outside of Bethel\, NY for three days of peace\, love\, and music. What transpired was the most influential musical festival in history. 32 of the biggest acts of the 60s took the stage\, and many of their performances have become a part of our collective cultural memory. Even those that weren’t there likely know about Jimi Hendrix performing the Star Spangled Banner\, Santana introducing himself the masses\, Janis Joplin wowing us with her incredible vocals\, The Who rocking as the sun came up and being interrupted by Abbie Hoffman.  \nNow five Central Coast bands will pay tribute to this great event as they cover songs and artists who participated in that great American festival. Steppin’ Out\, Unfinished Business\, Back Bay Betty\, Hilary Watson\, and Baylove will take the Melodrama stage on Mondays November 4 and 11\, and Tuesdays 5 and 12. They’ll play famous hits\, share stories\, and celebrate the spirit of peace and love that Woodstock was all about. This isn’t a typical Melodrama show\, there is no vaudeville revue or booing and hissing; just a few hours of great music played by amazing musicians in an intimate setting. Come hear the tunes that defined a generation\, played by the best local musicians\, in a great Central Coast venue. \nTickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Doors open at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7:00. All seats are reserved so attendees are encouraged to reserve ahead of time for the best seats. The show will last approximately two and a half hours. Food\, drink\, beer\, and wine will be available for purchase. For more information and to purchase tickets\, call the Melodrama Box Office\, at 805-489-2499\, or visit www.americanmelodrama.com/woodstock. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano\, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. Come see their brand new box office building across from the theatre\, you can’t miss it.  The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.
