SUMMARY:Mohamad Hafez Retrospective Art Exhibit at Cuesta College
DESCRIPTION:For its flagship show of the year\, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents a Retrospective exhibition by Syrian-American artist and architect Mohamad Hafez from Oct. 24 through Dec. 20. \nBorn in Damascus\, Hafez was raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and educated in the midwestern United States. His art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint\, and scrap metal. Using architectural skills\, he creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in appearance and politically charged in content. \nHafez’s work reflects his deep interest in the cross-disciplinary exploration of street art and realistic\, yet ironic sculptures. He purposefully infuses a stark contrast between the scenes he creates and the messages imbued in his work. Messages could include verses from the holy Qur’an\, audio recordings from his homeland\, or other elements of Islamic heritage reflected in the architectural typography. \n“It’s our biggest show of the year\,” said Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Coordinator Emma Saperstein. “It is a huge honor for the gallery to host Hafez’s very first retrospective in his career. The show will span over 20 years of his work and practice.” \nHafez’s artwork was recently featured in several highly acclaimed exhibitions. He is profiled in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The New Yorker\, and National Public Radio. Hafez is the recipient of the 2018 Connecticut Arts Hero Award for his extensive and continuous body of work on issues such as the Syrian civil war\, the worldwide refugee crisis\, and an overall desire to counter hate speech. \nRetrospective marks the first time Hafez’s artwork will be seen on the Central Coast. The opening reception is on Oct. 24 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. A sneak peek reception for students is at noon in the art gallery. A Syrian film screening and talk-back with Hafez will be held on Oct. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in Room 6304. \nThe Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202 for a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation.

SUMMARY:Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR! Moves) at Precision Physical Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Precision Physical Therapy is proud to announce it is offering Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR! Moves) exercise classes twice a week taught by Dr. Kristen Carless\, a PWR! Moves Certified Physical Therapist. \n  \nThe classes began after the realization that there were very few consistent exercises classes for people diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in the San Luis Obispo area. The goal is to provide a space for the local Parkinson’s community to stay active while having fun. \n  \nDr. Carless became involved after working with Parkinson’s patients through Maria Allen\, Central Coast Home Health’s San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County Parkinson Coordinator. The two have worked together to create more opportunity for the Parkinson community. “There are very few Parkinson specific research-based exercise skill training programs dedicated to maintaining and restoring skills that deteriorate and interfere with everyday movements and function in the local area\,” said Allen\, “I’m extremely excited that Precision Physical Therapy owners\, Dr. Carless and Dr. Svetich\, have seen this need and are so welcoming to the Parkinson community.” \n  \n  \nPWR! Moves offers a flexible and functional exercise plan for Parkinson’s patient that targets many symptoms and is easily adjustable based on disease severity. PWR! Moves are performed as large movements with focus on posture and high effort\, meant to assist in mobility. \n  \nPWR! Moves classes are taught at 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at Precision Physical Therapy and Wellness located at 211 Tank Farm Rd.\, Suite A (across from Farm Supply). The cost of the class is $15 per person or $20 for two people. \n  \nAbout Precision Physical Therapy and Wellness \nPrecision Physical Therapy and Wellness is a locally owned and operated physical therapy clinic. SUMMARY:Dance Work ‘FLEX’ about Filipino Migration at Cal Poly
DESCRIPTION:Dance Work ‘FLEX’ about Filipino Migration to be Performed Nov. 14 at Cal Poly \n  \nSAN LUIS OBISPO — Central Coast native Jay Carlon will bring his dance and theatre piece about his family’s Filipino migration story to Cal Poly’s Spanos Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday\, Nov. 14. A discussion\, moderated by Professor Lucy Mae San Pablo Burns from UCLA’s Asian American Studies Department\, will follow the performance. \n  \n“FLEX” — a dance theatre work in search of the Filipino American narrative — is an in-depth focus on colonization\, obedience\, resistance and solidarity. The work is dedicated to the director’s father\, Honorio Carlon\, who was part of the first large wave of Filipinos to migrate to the U.S. and the Central Coast in the 1920s as agricultural migrant workers. \nFLEX also draws from Jay Carlon’s experiences as a competitive wrestler\, as the characteristics and dynamics of wrestling parallel that of his multicultural identity as the youngest of 12 in a Filipino\, Catholic\, working class family. The performance originally premiered last February at L.A. Dance Project Studios. \nCarlon is a contemporary choreographer who was born and raised in Santa Maria and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. In 2016\, he started CARLON\, a multidisciplinary dance company that creates evocative site-responsive theatre. \nFLEX\, free and open to the public\, is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Ethnic Studies Department\, Vice President of Student Affairs\, the Office of the President\, the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion\, University Housing\, the College of Liberal Arts (CLA)\, the CLA Associate Dean for Diversity and Curriculum\, and ASI Student Government. Registration is encouraged\, but not required. \n  \nLinks \n— Jay Carlon: www.jaycarlon.com \n— Event: www.eventbrite.com/e/flex-at-cal-poly-tickets-76584752055
