SUMMARY:Mohamad Hafez Retrospective Art Exhibit at Cuesta College
DESCRIPTION:For its flagship show of the year\, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents a Retrospective exhibition by Syrian-American artist and architect Mohamad Hafez from Oct. 24 through Dec. 20. \nBorn in Damascus\, Hafez was raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and educated in the midwestern United States. His art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint\, and scrap metal. Using architectural skills\, he creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in appearance and politically charged in content. \nHafez’s work reflects his deep interest in the cross-disciplinary exploration of street art and realistic\, yet ironic sculptures. He purposefully infuses a stark contrast between the scenes he creates and the messages imbued in his work. Messages could include verses from the holy Qur’an\, audio recordings from his homeland\, or other elements of Islamic heritage reflected in the architectural typography. \n“It’s our biggest show of the year\,” said Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Coordinator Emma Saperstein. “It is a huge honor for the gallery to host Hafez’s very first retrospective in his career. The show will span over 20 years of his work and practice.” \nHafez’s artwork was recently featured in several highly acclaimed exhibitions. He is profiled in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The New Yorker\, and National Public Radio. Hafez is the recipient of the 2018 Connecticut Arts Hero Award for his extensive and continuous body of work on issues such as the Syrian civil war\, the worldwide refugee crisis\, and an overall desire to counter hate speech. \nRetrospective marks the first time Hafez’s artwork will be seen on the Central Coast. The opening reception is on Oct. 24 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. A sneak peek reception for students is at noon in the art gallery. A Syrian film screening and talk-back with Hafez will be held on Oct. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in Room 6304. \nThe Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202 for a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation.

SUMMARY:Ballet Unbound presented by The Movement Arts Collective
DESCRIPTION:On November 15th and 17th the Movement Arts Collective presents Ballet Unbound at the Performing Arts Center’s Spanos Theatre.  This annual Fall Season of ballet classics\, evocative modern dance\, and contemporary ballet highlights the best of concert dance on the Central Coast. This year’s iteration includes three original works works which focus on the theme of overcoming barriers. \n \nIn Harlequinade\, a one-act restaging by Catherine Barnickel of Petipa’s classic ballet\, love conquers all as classic Comedia Dell’Arte characters Harlequin\, Columbine\, Pierrot\, and Pierette engage in comedic scenes and lively dance sequences.  With dancers Jaydn Dowler and Eliana Tabarez\, Silver Medal winners at California Dance Classics San Francisco Competition\, in the lead roles bolstered by a cast of 30\, this production showcases refined ballet technique\, pointe work\, an orchestral score\, and storytelling that is fun for audiences of all ages. \nSecond on the program is a world premiere by Maartje Lawrence-Hermans\, titled Uprooted.  Based off of her own experiences emigrating from the Netherlands to the United States 8 years ago\, this emotionally driven work features 6 dancers and live multi-instrumentalist musician Logan Castro with an original score.  A conceptual piece\, the audience glimpses the complexity of leaving ones homeland and the emotions associated with finding home in another country.  Bolstered by the Psychology Masters Thesis entitled Immigration: Exploration of the Liminal Space Betwixt and Between Cultures by Maria Elena Castellano-Hsia\, herself an immigrant to the Central Coast from Argentina\, the author and choreographer discussed ways in which their own personal experiences may be universal.  Together the choreographer and dancers worked to establish a movement language that could be both lost and found in the swirling mental and physical landscape inhabited by many immigrants. \nFinally\, Ryan Lawrence will present a new work made as a co-production with Festival Mozaic.  Set to two of Bach’s famed cello suites\, In the Middle Range\, explores the co-existent and polar forces of creation and destruction with movement influence by classical ballet\, baroque dances\, and dance theater.  Lawrence used as research material biographical information on Bach and the famed cellist Pablo Casals\, and juxtaposes the two seminal figures\, their lives\, and the unique desire in Bach to highlight divinity in the creation of his music and Casals to discover the humanity between the notes. \n  \nPerformance Details: \n  \nWhat: Ballet Unbound presented by The Movement Arts Collective \nWhen: Friday November 15th at 7:00pm and Sunday November 17th at 2:00pm \nWhere: The Performing Arts Center\, San Luis Obispo\, Spanos Theatre \nHow: Tickets available at www.pacslo.org or by calling the box office at (805) 756-4849 \n  \nThe Movement Arts Collective is a local non-profit dance company founded by international dancers Maartje and Ryan Lawrence to present works of professional quality featuring local talent\, growing the dancers and dance audiences of the future. \n  \nFor more information or inquiries please contact us at (805) 704-2391 or info@movementartscollective.org
