SUMMARY:Mohamad Hafez Retrospective Art Exhibit at Cuesta College
DESCRIPTION:For its flagship show of the year\, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents a Retrospective exhibition by Syrian-American artist and architect Mohamad Hafez from Oct. 24 through Dec. 20. \nBorn in Damascus\, Hafez was raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and educated in the midwestern United States. His art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint\, and scrap metal. Using architectural skills\, he creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in appearance and politically charged in content. \nHafez’s work reflects his deep interest in the cross-disciplinary exploration of street art and realistic\, yet ironic sculptures. He purposefully infuses a stark contrast between the scenes he creates and the messages imbued in his work. Messages could include verses from the holy Qur’an\, audio recordings from his homeland\, or other elements of Islamic heritage reflected in the architectural typography. \n“It’s our biggest show of the year\,” said Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Coordinator Emma Saperstein. “It is a huge honor for the gallery to host Hafez’s very first retrospective in his career. The show will span over 20 years of his work and practice.” \nHafez’s artwork was recently featured in several highly acclaimed exhibitions. He is profiled in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The New Yorker\, and National Public Radio. Hafez is the recipient of the 2018 Connecticut Arts Hero Award for his extensive and continuous body of work on issues such as the Syrian civil war\, the worldwide refugee crisis\, and an overall desire to counter hate speech. \nRetrospective marks the first time Hafez’s artwork will be seen on the Central Coast. The opening reception is on Oct. 24 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. A sneak peek reception for students is at noon in the art gallery. A Syrian film screening and talk-back with Hafez will be held on Oct. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in Room 6304. \nThe Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202 for a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Presents Annual Fall Jazz Concert with New Director
DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly Presents Annual Fall Jazz Concert with New Director on Nov. 22 \n  \nSAN LUIS OBISPO — A new era for jazz at Cal Poly begins with the first student concert of the 2019-20 academic year as the new director of jazz studies leads three ensembles in concert. The Cal Poly Jazz Ensembles will present the annual Fall Jazz Concert with new director Arthur White at 7:30 p.m. Friday\, Nov. 22\, in Spanos Theatre on campus. \nThe Cal Poly Jazz Ensemble\, formerly University Jazz Band I; and the Cal Poly Jazz Band\, formerly University Jazz Band II; will perform\, as will the newly re-formed Cal Poly Vocal Jazz Ensemble. \nThe jazz program has expanded to include six chamber jazz groups — combos of five-to six members each — with styles including hard bop\, fusion\, Latin jazz and contemporary jazz. These new groups are slated to perform at upcoming concerts. \nThrough the years Cal Poly jazz groups have performed with jazz luminaries James Carter\, Kevin Mahogany\, Louie Bellson\, T.S. Monk\, Arturo Sandoval and Joshua Redman\, among others. The bands have gone on numerous performance tours and perform at a variety of festivals\, including the annual Pismo Beach Jubilee by the Sea in October. \nPrior to his appointment at Cal Poly\, White was the director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri (MU) and Northeastern State University. He produced six critically acclaimed recordings by the MU Concert Jazz Band\, and ensembles under his direction were selected to perform at conferences for the International Society for Music Education\, Missouri Music Educators Association\, Jazz Education Network and International Society for Improvised Music. \nWhite\, a saxophonist\, gave his Cal Poly debut recital Oct. 18\, premiering his new work\, “Pictures of the Heartland\,” with vibraphonist Joe Locke and drummer Peter Erskine. \nTickets for the Nov. 22 event are $14 for the public and $9 for students and Jazz Federation members. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are available at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone\, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849). \nThe Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events. \nThe concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department\, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information\, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406 or visit its calendar website. \n  \nLinks \n— Spanos Theatre: maps.calpoly.edu/place/bldg-044-0/\n— Cal Poly Ticket Office: tickets.calpoly.edu\n— Cal Poly Music Department Calendar: music.calpoly.edu/calendar/

SUMMARY:Luna Lounge Presents: Chris Beland
DESCRIPTION:LUNA LOUNGE WITH CHRIS BELAND \nNovember 22\, 2019 \nFriday @ 10:30p \nSinger/Songwriter \nChris Beland is a singer/songwriter who has recently returned to the Central Coast after eight years in Bend\, Oregon. His performances in the Pacific North West included the Sisters Folk Festival and the Bend Roots Festival. \nSince his return to California\, Chris has become a sought-after local talent at the finest vineyards including Edna Valley\, Sextant\, and Chamisal. In 2014 he joined the line-up for the Central Coast’s Roll Out the Barrels Festival\, and he was awarded “runner-up” for Santa Barbara County’s Best Local Musician. \nHis music nods stylistically to folk gods Paul Simon and Bob Dylan as well as contemporary artists Vance Joy and Josh Ritter. Beland’s soulful silk vocals flesh out his subtly profound lyrics of love\, humanity\, and humility. As a solo act\, he accompanies his words with the seasoned strum of an acoustic guitar\, the haunted twang of a harmonica\, and the steady heartbeat of his kick drum.
