SUMMARY:Mohamad Hafez Retrospective Art Exhibit at Cuesta College
DESCRIPTION:For its flagship show of the year\, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents a Retrospective exhibition by Syrian-American artist and architect Mohamad Hafez from Oct. 24 through Dec. 20. \nBorn in Damascus\, Hafez was raised in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and educated in the midwestern United States. His art reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint\, and scrap metal. Using architectural skills\, he creates surrealistic Middle Eastern streetscapes that are architectural in appearance and politically charged in content. \nHafez’s work reflects his deep interest in the cross-disciplinary exploration of street art and realistic\, yet ironic sculptures. He purposefully infuses a stark contrast between the scenes he creates and the messages imbued in his work. Messages could include verses from the holy Qur’an\, audio recordings from his homeland\, or other elements of Islamic heritage reflected in the architectural typography. \n“It’s our biggest show of the year\,” said Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Coordinator Emma Saperstein. “It is a huge honor for the gallery to host Hafez’s very first retrospective in his career. The show will span over 20 years of his work and practice.” \nHafez’s artwork was recently featured in several highly acclaimed exhibitions. He is profiled in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, The New Yorker\, and National Public Radio. Hafez is the recipient of the 2018 Connecticut Arts Hero Award for his extensive and continuous body of work on issues such as the Syrian civil war\, the worldwide refugee crisis\, and an overall desire to counter hate speech. \nRetrospective marks the first time Hafez’s artwork will be seen on the Central Coast. The opening reception is on Oct. 24 from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. A sneak peek reception for students is at noon in the art gallery. A Syrian film screening and talk-back with Hafez will be held on Oct. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in Room 6304. \nThe Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202 for a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation.

SUMMARY:Presqu’ile Winery Presents: 3rd Fridays with ALBERT KASS
DESCRIPTION:3RD FRIDAYS \nfrom 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the Tasting Room \nand continues on every 3rd Friday of each ensuing month \n  \nFriday\, December 20\, 2019 \nALBERT KASS \nFeatured Pairing: Gamay Nouveau \n  \n  \nAlbert Kass – Young Old Man\nIndie/alternative/folk artist Albert Kass is from Los Angeles. Kass has returned to writing and performing after two careers and two decades:  “Call me a late bloomer. All the perceptions were there. But I didn’t feel I was called to music until now.” His new album\, Young Old Man\, is a coming-of-age tale – a culmination of years of original songwriting and a coalescing of sound\, style and aesthetic. The young old man: broken-in yet modern\, vintage vibes that echo of tomorrow. Raw with an edge but softened with bittersweet nostalgia\, like the worn leather of a favorite jacket. \nTightly edited with 10 songs\, Young Old Man remembers the purity and clarity of youth\, and how the joys and miseries of growing up take on energies of angst\, abstraction\, and the sarcasm of adulthood. “I wanted to feel that in song\,” he says. The sound production is minimal\, to enhance intimacy and his easy\, deep melodies. “Stripped down is what my life sounds like now. Like ‘Shallow Sea\,’ putting my soul\, inside-out\, on display.” Kass utilizes only voice\, acoustic guitar\, upright bass—featuring soulful bowing on tracks like ‘The Void’ and ‘Awake’—and simple percussion. The result is less extreme\, with easy\, haunting hooks\, arpeggios\, as well as a subtly visceral quality\, like on ‘Hurricane.’ His next project features a combination of intensely personal ballads like ‘Our Place’ and ‘The Fair\,’ twangy protest songs like ‘The Living Man\,’ and an acoustic cover of Grizzly Bear’s ‘Two Weeks.’ \nPresqu’ile Winery looks forward to showcasing him during the holiday season 3RD FRIDAYS.
