SUMMARY:BELONGING | Portraits and Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Portaits and Perspectives is a crucial component of R.A.C.E. Matters SLO County‘s event series entitled BELONGING: Local Expressions of Black Empowerment and Possibility. \nThe exhibit combines portraits by photographer Renoda Campbell with oral history excerpts — centering and amplifying local Black voices. The SLO library will exhibit additional portraits and perspectives to those shown at Downtown SLO; and will also feature listening stations — allowing visitors to dig deeper into local lived experiences. The SLO Library’s front display case on the first floor will feature a visual tribute to local Black culture and history. The exhibit will be installed though April. \nFebruary 1st through April 30th Portraits and Perspectives at Downtown SLO\, 1135 Chorro St. \nFebruary 1st through April 30th Portraits and Perspectives at San Luis Obispo Library\, 995 Palm St. \n\n		\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\nPhotos by Renoda Campbell featuring artist Abbey Onikoyi \n\nAdditional BELONGING events\, include: \nFebruary 1st Kut to be the Best documentary screening at The Kinney SLO\, 1800 Monterey Street. \nFebruary 7th Art After Dark at Downtown SLO \nFebruary 12th Black Business Belongs: Black Business Leaders Forum moderated by City Councilwoman Erica Stewart\, at SeaCrest Hotel. \nFebruary 29th Stories Matter: An evening of live storytelling at The Kinney SLO. \nIn commemoration of Black History Month\, on February 1st local organization R.A.C.E. Matters will launch a month-long\, multimedia\, multi-location event series entitled BELONGING. The series kicks off February 1st with the R.A.C.E. Matters produced short documentary film Kut to be the Best- the Last Black Barbershop in SLO. The BELONGING program also includes Portraits and Perspectives: photography and oral history excerpts at the Downtown SLO Association office and the San Luis Obispo Library. Rounding out the month\, R.A.C.E. Matters will also host a Black business leaders forum and evening of live storytelling. Some events have limited space and require reservations. More than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963\, Always…Patsy Cline is a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger\, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961\, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. \nThe musical play\, complete with down home country humor\, poignant tales of life on the road and even some audience participation\, includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy\, I Fall to Pieces\, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight — 27 songs in all!  The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger\, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.” \nCreated and originally directed by Ted Swindley\nDirected by Kevin Harris\nMusical Direction by Wendy Feaver\nScenic Design by David Linfield

SUMMARY:Mark Bryan: Fake News  at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Mark Bryan\, Las Meninas\, 2019\, oil on canvas \n  \nFrom February 28 to April 26\, 2020\, the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art will be hosting the exhibition Fake News by Central Coast artist Mark Bryan. This exhibition features Bryan’s well-known political satire and pop-surrealism paintings. \n  \nRaised during the turmoil of the 1950s and 60s\, Bryan is notably influenced by the pop-culture and political dissent that defined those decades. The influences of cheesy Sci-Fi and horror movies\, comic books\, and Salvador Dalí are informed by his coming-of-age experiences during the violence of the Vietnam War\, the Red Scare\, and the Civil Rights Movement. Many of Bryan’s references go much deeper though\, and require a keen eye. Bryan combines art historical references with contemporary topics\, and adds in a healthy dose of humor. One such painting is the reinterpretation of Arnold Bröklin’s Isle of the Dead. In Bryan’s version\, the desolate island is filled with fun-loving skeletons diving off rocks into the water\, paddle-boarding\, and tight roping. Another such painting is Las Meninas\, a reinterpretation Diego Velázquez’s famous painting in the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid\, Spain. Bryan’s version replaces Velázquez’s cleverly placed self-portrait with his own “big baby” self-portrait\, which is featured in numerous other paintings. Instead of the studio floor\, the Infanta and ladies-in-waiting are engulfed in a stormy sea\, in which a menacing serpent-like creature cuts through the waves. The painting has been updated to a surrealistic scene\, but one that still turns the attention back onto the viewer as the subject matter\, something many of Bryan’s paintings do. Viewers are often confronted with familiar imagery and behaviors in his artworks. From tabloid news stories\, to modern technology\, to the climate crisis\, Bryan’s work is truly a product of our times. \n  \nIn his political work\, Bryan doesn’t make one statement and move along. He beats a steady drum and stands with firm ground in a political environment that benefits from short attention spans. He frequently revisits stories and motifs\, creating connections and repetition between all his paintings. His work has the unique ability to make viewers gasp\, think\, and chuckle. Originally noticed for his critical paintings of the Bush Administration\, Fake News features newer paintings of Bryan’s that turn the lens on the behavior of Donald Trump. This series of paintings is featured alongside his works of pop-surrealism and religious satire. Although politically charged\, they are undoubtedly outstanding works of art\, regardless of one’s political affiliation. Visitors are welcome to explore these paintings\, see what they can discover\, and perhaps be challenged along the way. \n  \nSLOMA will be hosting an opening reception for the exhibition on March 6 from 6 to 9 PM\, in conjunction with Art After Dark. This event is free and light refreshments will be served. Visitors who also wish to hear Bryan speak in more detail about his influences and technique are invited to attend an ARTalk on March 5 at 12 PM. \n  \nThe San Luis Obispo Museum of Art\, dedicated to the education\, presentation and preservation of the visual arts of California’s Central Coast\, is located at 1010 Broad Street\, on the west end of Mission Plaza. SUMMARY:Dive-in with Mommies & Guppies at the Central Coast Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this one-of-a-kind early childhood education program is to engage young children in the wonders of the sea and to inspire future generations of marine scientists. \nThe Central Coast Aquarium (CCA) is pleased to present another season of its popular preschool program called Mommies & Guppies but\, fathers\, grandparents\, and caregivers are also welcome to attend with children five years old and younger. Mommies & Guppies is a monthly event from October through May designed just for preschoolers and adults to explore the Central Coast Aquarium together. Held during special operating hours when the Aquarium is closed to the public\, adults and tots enjoy up-close animal encounters with creatures like sea stars and urchins\, story time\, sing-a-longs\, games\, and crafts. A different educational theme is featured each month and CCA’s uses the unique setting of the Aquarium to\nhelp make learning fun. \nMommies & Guppies kicks off on Monday\, October 7th at the Central Coast Aquarium in Avila Beach and continues on the first Monday of every month through May from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30am. Cost is $6 per session\, payable at the door.
