SUMMARY:SLO REP Presents\, Always... Patsy Cline
DESCRIPTION:Show Times\nFebruary 7 – March 8\, 2020\nWed-Sun @ 7 pm\nSat & Sun @ 2 pm\nBased on a true story. \nAlways…Patsy Cline is a delightful musical about friendship\, country music and a brilliant artist who left us all too soon. More than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963\, Always…Patsy Cline is a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger\, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961\, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. \nThe musical play\, complete with down home country humor\, poignant tales of life on the road and even some audience participation\, includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy\, I Fall to Pieces\, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight — 27 songs in all!  The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger\, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.” \nCreated and originally directed by Ted Swindley\nDirected by Kevin Harris\nMusical Direction by Wendy Feaver\nScenic Design by David Linfield

SUMMARY:Mark Bryan: Fake News at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Mark Bryan\, Las Meninas\, 2019\, oil on canvas \n  \nFrom February 28 to April 26\, 2020\, the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art will be hosting the exhibition Fake News by Central Coast artist Mark Bryan. This exhibition features Bryan’s well-known political satire and pop-surrealism paintings. \n  \nRaised during the turmoil of the 1950s and 60s\, Bryan is notably influenced by the pop-culture and political dissent that defined those decades. The influences of cheesy Sci-Fi and horror movies\, comic books\, and Salvador Dalí are informed by his coming-of-age experiences during the violence of the Vietnam War\, the Red Scare\, and the Civil Rights Movement. Many of Bryan’s references go much deeper though\, and require a keen eye. Bryan combines art historical references with contemporary topics\, and adds in a healthy dose of humor. One such painting is the reinterpretation of Arnold Bröklin’s Isle of the Dead. In Bryan’s version\, the desolate island is filled with fun-loving skeletons diving off rocks into the water\, paddle-boarding\, and tight roping. Another such painting is Las Meninas\, a reinterpretation Diego Velázquez’s famous painting in the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid\, Spain. Bryan’s version replaces Velázquez’s cleverly placed self-portrait with his own “big baby” self-portrait\, which is featured in numerous other paintings. Instead of the studio floor\, the Infanta and ladies-in-waiting are engulfed in a stormy sea\, in which a menacing serpent-like creature cuts through the waves. The painting has been updated to a surrealistic scene\, but one that still turns the attention back onto the viewer as the subject matter\, something many of Bryan’s paintings do. Viewers are often confronted with familiar imagery and behaviors in his artworks. From tabloid news stories\, to modern technology\, to the climate crisis\, Bryan’s work is truly a product of our times. \n  \nIn his political work\, Bryan doesn’t make one statement and move along. He beats a steady drum and stands with firm ground in a political environment that benefits from short attention spans. He frequently revisits stories and motifs\, creating connections and repetition between all his paintings. His work has the unique ability to make viewers gasp\, think\, and chuckle. Originally noticed for his critical paintings of the Bush Administration\, Fake News features newer paintings of Bryan’s that turn the lens on the behavior of Donald Trump. This series of paintings is featured alongside his works of pop-surrealism and religious satire. Although politically charged\, they are undoubtedly outstanding works of art\, regardless of one’s political affiliation. Visitors are welcome to explore these paintings\, see what they can discover\, and perhaps be challenged along the way. \n  \nSLOMA will be hosting an opening reception for the exhibition on March 6 from 6 to 9 PM\, in conjunction with Art After Dark. This event is free and light refreshments will be served. Visitors who also wish to hear Bryan speak in more detail about his influences and technique are invited to attend an ARTalk on March 5 at 12 PM. \n  \nThe San Luis Obispo Museum of Art\, dedicated to the education\, presentation and preservation of the visual arts of California’s Central Coast\, is located at 1010 Broad Street\, on the west end of Mission Plaza. Hours are 11 AM–5 PM. Closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Free admission\, donations appreciated. For more info\, visit SLOMA.org.

SUMMARY:MOE. at the Fremont
DESCRIPTION:MOE. will be live in downtown SLO at the Fremont Theater on Wednesday\, March 4! \nTickets On-Sale Friday\, November 8 at 10 AM! \n♦ SHOW INFORMATION ♦ \nDoor Time- 8:00 PM\nAll Ages \n♦ TICKET OUTLET ♦ \nBoo Boo Records\n978 Monterey St • SLO\nMon-Wed 10-8\, Thurs-Sat 10-9\, Sun 11-6 \n♦ BAND INFORMATION ♦ \nmoe. is the preeminent progressive rock band on the music scene today. With 20 years of touring and just as many albums under its belt\, the quintet of Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey on guitars and vocals\, Rob Derhak on bass and vocals\, Jim Loughlin on percussion and vibes\, and Vinnie Amico on Drums\, continues to push the standard for performance art. \nCritical acclaim and a solid national and international fan base has built a dedicated following that grows each year. Whether touring across the globe\, headlining music festivals\, or sharing the stage with such celebrated acts as the Allmans\, The Who\, or Robert Plant\, among others\, what keeps moe. at the forefront of the music scene is not only the energy and vitality of their music and songwriting\, but the showmanship in which it is delivered. \nFrom its humble\, inconspicuous beginnings as a local bar band in Buffalo in the late 1980s\, to headlining Radio City Music Hall two years straight on New Year’s Eve\, moe.’s journey has been one of hard work\, perseverance\, and dedication. Their music is clever\, melodic\, refined; their performances are entertaining\, mesmerizing and epic. There’s a reason that Rolling Stone magazine placed Chuck and Al among the top twenty new “guitar gods\,” why the pair were featured in Guitar World and Modern Guitar; why Jim and Vinnie have been featured in Drum! magazine; why Rob in Bass Player and State of Mind magazines — all in the same year — because they’re that good! Critically acclaimed for its songwriting and studio work\, the group’s 2001 studio album\, DITHER\, was awarded four stars by Rolling Stone. 2003’s WORMWOOD received four stars by Blender Magazine. Their two latest efforts\, THE CONCH and STICKS & STONES\, received rave reviews including Rolling Stone\, Paste\, and Blender magazine. In honor of their 20th Anniversary\, the band released SMASH HITS\, VOLUME 1. Billed as a “Young Person’s Guide to moe.\,” the album features band and fan favorites — some recast in new recordings that showcase the band’s ongoing evolution. “It’s what we and others perceive as our strongest crowd pleasers of the past twenty years\,” Rob muses. “It’s a compilation that you can listen to over and over again. Something your mother might enjoy.” \nThe band continues to tour extensively: from San Fran to Amsterdam\, from Tokyo to Toronto\, from Chi Town to Bean Town\, from Austin to Atlanta\, playing and packing venues large and small\, or intimate and grand. Long a featured act at music festivals\, they have performed at Lollapalooza\, Bonnaroo\, Langerado\, and Vegoose\, to name a few; yet made time to promote and perform at their own festivals — Summer Camp\, Snoe.down\, and moe.down. \nmoe. was recently inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame\, being recognized not only for the impact they have made in their hometown\, but for their charitable work on a national and international level as well. The band hosted a Tsunami Benefit concert at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City on February 10\, 2005 and raised $150\,000 for Tsunami survivors. The concert earned moe. its second Live Performance of the Year Jammy Award. moe. also raised over $100\,000 for various charities\, including the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina survivors and for the music department at Bradley Elementary in Utica\, NY\, to help keep music in children’s lives. \nmoe. kicked off their 20th anniversary in style\, hosting a two-night stand in New York City at Roseland Ballroom\, which included a special benefit concert for WHY (World Hunger Year) http://www.whyhunger.org/. Throughout 2010\, moe. continued to bring awareness to World Hunger and other issues\, working with Headcount\, Freedom for Burma\, and many other charities. \nBy all accounts\, for this “legendary jam band\,” as Rolling Stone magazine recently described them\, it would be best to keep your eyes on this band and your ears tuned in to their music. Witness history in the making. This is welcome news for the moe. faithful and the band’s ever-expanding fan base. Yet — even better news for the world of rock and roll — moe. has finally come into their own.
