Her most recent book\, “Disappearing Destinations” (Penguin Random House\, co-authored with Heather Hansen) won the Outstanding Book Award for General Nonfiction from the American Society of Journalists & Authors. Kim chaired the journalism program at Cuesta College from 2012 to 2016 and has taught journalism at Cal Poly since 2004. She writes frequently about the spread of misinformation through social networks.

DESCRIPTION:Special Events and Faculty Recitals\n\n\nVirtual Music Faculty Showcase \n\nFriday\, Oct. 23\n6:30 p.m. \nThe Cal Poly Music Department will present a virtual Music Faculty Showcase and post-recital discussion at 6:30 p.m. Friday\, Oct. 23. \n“The recital\, which is part of Cal Poly’s Mustang Family Week\, is a fun opportunity for our faculty to collaborate and to demonstrate the breadth of talent across our teaching studios\,” said recital coordinator Christopher J. Woodruff. “There will be a live Q&A session with faculty immediately following the recital.” \nCal Poly’s applied faculty are recognized across the region for their expertise in solo and chamber ensemble performance. For this showcase recital\, intimate works that highlight their artistic achievements will be presented. \nWoodruff\, on trumpet\, will perform “Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury” by Benjamin Britten; Mark Miller\, trombone\, will perform “On Your Own Now” by Steven Verhelst; Emily Lanzone\, violin\, and Laura Gaynon\, cello\, will play the first two movements — Adagio and Allegro — from the Violin Sonata in C Major\, Op. 5\, No. 3\, by Arcangelo Corelli; Lisa Nauful and Nick Waldron\, bassoon\, will be joined by Cal Poly alumna Emmie Banninger (Music\, ’17) to play some bassoon trios; and Arthur White and David Becker\, saxophone\, and Ken Hustad\, bass\, will perform “Inner Urge” by Joe Henderson. Heidi Butterfield\, oboe\, will play “Two Pieces for Two Oboes and English Horn” by Gordon Jacob. The selection is written as an oboe trio for which all parts will be played and recorded by Butterfield. \nPaul Woodring\, who is also the university organist\, will perform “Theme and Variations” by Hendrik Andriessen on the Forbes Pipe Organ in the Performing Arts Center. Woodring will play piano with two other recitalists: Hustad\, bass: Adagio from the ballet “Unforgettable 1919” by Dmitri Shostakovich; and Alba Franco-Cancél\, pert-soprano: “Pueblito\, mi Pueblo” (“Little Village\, My Village”) by Carlos Guastavino and “Zapateado” from “La tempranica” by Gerónimo Giménez. \nFor information about the recitalists\, visit the Music Department’s faculty website. Franco-Cancél is teaching fall quarter only\, and her bio is on her website. \nMusic majors at Cal Poly are required to be enrolled in applied or private lessons each quarter. Many non-music majors who are enrolled in larger ensembles like the Cal Poly Symphony\, Cal Poly Wind Bands\, Cal Poly Choirs and University Jazz Bands also have lessons with faculty. \nTickets to the virtual event are $5 and can be purchased online from the Performing Arts Center. DESCRIPTION:THE WHAT??\nLegend says these ZOMBIE-like creatures were created in a secret laboratory located on this site over a century ago. \n\nStaying close to your expert guide all but guarantees you will make it out of this arena in the same condition as you entered.\n\n\nYou may have a few ZOMBIES jump out at you on the way to the bus\, so stay alert and keep your head on straight! Just be sure you do NOT look the ZOMBIES in the eye.\n\n\nYou will be escorted through our Zombie fields by an experienced Gladiator Guide to the “safe bus” where you will be entrusted with a “Zombie Annihilator Zapper filled with 125 Zombie Glowing Paintballs.\nIt’s lots of fun and best of all…the  ZOMBIES CAN’T SHOOT BACK!\n\n\n\n\nTHE BONUS\nAs an added BONUS every ticket holder will receive a free general public entry ticket (value $16) good for another day of fun at the Gladiator Paintball Park between October and ending December 27\, 2020. (sorry\, these tickets can not be redeemed for Zombie Hunt – must be day play on weekend) \n\n\n\n\nTHE NUMBERS\nEach bus group consists of 22 courageous ZOMBIE fighters.  Help save the planet while Rock and Roll music fills the night air! \n\nSign up individually or with a group of family and friends until we fill each bus!\nDon’t delay\, these events have sold out every night for the last 3 years!\nGroups start every 30 minutes at dark.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAPPROPRIATE AGES\nFun for ALL Ages.
