SUMMARY:7:30 AM | Virtual Good Morning SLO - February 2021
DESCRIPTION:View this month’s GMSLO Digital Flyers HERE \n\nGrab breakfast and coffee and join us for this month’s Good Morning SLO program. To preserve some community connection in this time of being apart\, you’ll have the chance to interact with speakers by asking your most pressing questions. Zoom invite will be sent upon registration. \nThank you to this month’s featured sponsor: \n \n\nFROM VIRTUAL LEARNING TO LIVE PAINTING\nWhen SLOMA unveiled Juan Alberto Negroni’s ‘Pacificcarabean’ mural\, they were also showcasing the work of students like Celeste Dowlan who assisted in its creation. Celeste will share her experience working side by side with an internationally renowned artist and how art can help people find connection and hope amidst separation and grief. \n\nGIVING LIFE TO AN ESSENTIAL INDUSTRY\nEveryone knows it’s a good thing to donate blood but so few of us really know how the industry works. Vitalant’s Laura Kamada will explain why it feels like there is endless urgency around donations\, where they go once they leave the center\, and how the business model makes access to this essential human need possible. \n\nFROM EMBERS TO WOOD-FIRED PIZZA\nWhen the pandemic hit\, Kean McCabe was among the 400\,000 US restaurant workers to be laid off nationwide. He turned his setback into a once in a lifetime opportunity and went from building a pizza oven in his Los Osos backyard to leading a flourishing catering company that serves the Central Coast. \n\nFINDING THE HELPERS\nOne of the most heart-warming aspects of the pandemic has been the surge of strangers coming together to support one another. Through the Facebook Group HelpSLO\, Leah Wood created a place for those who need help\, and those who want to offer help to find each other. She will share how the group has blossomed beyond Facebook and helped thousands of people in need. \n\nSHOOTING FOR THE STARS ON THE CENTRAL COAST\nNearly 65 years after humans first ventured into space\, possibilities continue to grow on the Central Coast. Vandenberg’s Colonel David Rickards will offer insight into the 30th Space Wing’s latest missions\, how new funding and private contracts will impact space exploration\, and what growing support for the US Space Force means for our region’s economy. \n\nFINDING JOY IN THE JOURNEY\nKiah Twisselman couldn’t have anticipated the experiences and national coverage she would receive when she started her quest of personal development. But through it all\, she realized she could help others who were interested in their own transformations. Kiah will join us to share her journey and offer some of the lessons she’s learned along the way. \n\nThank you to our 2021 Good Morning SLO Annual Sponsors:

SUMMARY:Virtual Community Meeting: Downtown Paving 2021-22
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an upcoming virtual community meeting! (The meeting will be recorded if you cannot attend)\n\n\nThursday\, February 25\, 2021 at 6 PM  \nJoin the meeting by clicking this link at the meeting time: https://slocity-org.zoom.us/j/92266081708?pwd=emxYLzdzdmxlRUVyeHR6WUx0YWprdz09 \nOverall Project Goal:\nRepair and reseal Higuera and Marsh Streets through the downtown while increasing accessibility and safety for all roadway users. \nProject Objectives:\n1. Repair damaged pavement and potholes\, and extend life of existing pavement surface\n2. Improve ADA access and parking availability for persons with disabilities\n3. Improve safety and access for pedestrians and bicyclists\n4. Minimize impacts to on-street parking\n5. Minimize inconveniences to businesses during construction\n6. Implement elements of Downtown Concept Plan\, where feasible \nWhen and Where?\nThe below graphic shows the street segments on Marsh and Higuera that will be repaired. Some segments will be constructed starting the summer of 2021\, while segments in the downtown core (between Santa Rosa and Nipomo) will be constructed starting the summer of 2022. The paving within the downtown core is planned to be deferred to 2022 in order to reduce further disruptions to downtown businesses following impact of COVID-19 starting in 2020. Each paving project will last approximately 5-6 months. \n(Note that some short segments of Johnson/Peach/Pepper outside of the downtown will be sealed in 2021. Focused outreach to properties near that area will be conducted outside of this planning effort.) \n \nWhat is proposed?\nThe below graphic calls out specific locations for improvements based on preliminary plans. Final designs will be refined based on community input.\n \n\nNew ADA on-street parking spaces will also be provided throughout the project area consistent with current guidance. \nConsistent with the Downtown Concept Plan\, the paving project proposes removal of one auto travel lane on Marsh and Higuera in order to reduce illegal speeding and provide more street width for pedestrian and bicycle facilities\, as well as existing and future parklets. These modifications would retain sufficient traffic capacity to accommodate existing and future auto traffic volumes. These plans would extend the current pilot lane reductions and bikeway enhancements on Higuera Street (Santa Rosa to Nipomo) to a permanent configuration. Existing pilot parklet installations will be retained\, and may become permanent pending City Council approval. \n\nHow can I stay engaged and provide input?\nYour feedback and input will help make this a successful project!\n\nPlease visit https://www.opentownhall.com/10178 to leave comments and questions regarding the Downtown Paving Project.\nFuture virtual presentations are being planned. Stay tuned for when they will be offered. This webpage will be updated as events are scheduled.\nTo be included on project-specific email distributions\, please contact jrice@slocity.org.
