SUMMARY:Atmospheres Deep Exhibition to Explore Humans Connection to the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:San Luis Obispo Museum of Art Reopens for Visitors  \n Atmospheres Deep Exhibition to Explore Humans Connection to the Ocean  \nMarking San Luis Obispo Museum of Art’s (SLOMA) first public show since the beginning of the pandemic\, Atmospheres Deep will premiere for the public at the end of May. This multimedia group exhibition examines coastal regions above and below the ocean’s surface to emulate these atmospheres and uncover human impact on the ocean. The artworks selected for Atmospheres Deep present the feeling of increasing atmospheric pressure experienced during ocean exploration. Atmospheres Deep begins Saturday\, May 29\, and runs through Sunday\, August 1. Reflected in the reopening\, the Museum also announces new hours of 11 a.m. to 5p.m. from Thursday – Monday each week.   \nPresented in collaboration with SUPERCOLLIDER\, Atmospheres Deep draws metaphorical parallels between the real and the psychological pressure we experience in reaction to an impending ecological tipping point for the overall health of marine ecosystems.  \nThe artists featured in the exhibition include Christine Wertheim\, Carolina Caycedo\, Courtney Mattison\, Stephen Ehret\, Elena Soterakis\, Maru Garcia\, Isabel Beavers\, Danielle Parsons\, Richelle Gribble\, Emma Akmakdijan\, among others. For the Atmospheres Deep exhibition\, each artists’ work embodies a desire to rekindle society’s relationship with the world’s oceans and illustrates these critical issues in a range of mixed media video works\, sculptures and paintings.  \n“SLOMA is thrilled to be reopening to our public so we can continue our mission of being accessible\, relevant and exciting to the community we serve\,” said Leann Standish\, executive director of SLOMA. “The California Central Coast region benefits so much from the ecological beauty and diversity of the ocean. Atmospheres Deep will really strike a cord with our regional audiences and highlight important issues.”    \nIn celebration of the Atmospheres Deep exhibition\, SLOMA will host a Zoom panel discussion on June 23 from 6–7 PM PST. The panel discussion will be moderated by Guest Curators Richelle Gribble and Emma Akmakdjian with conversation between Maru Garcia\, Christine Wertheim Elena Soterakis\, and Benjamin Ruttenberg\, marine biologist and Director of Cal Poly’s Center for Coastal Marine Science. Interested parties may register for the panel discussion on the exhibition webpage: https://sloma.org/exhibition/atmospheres-deep/  \nIn addition to reopening\, SLOMA is launching “Gallery on the Go”\, free family art making activities every Second Saturday. For Atmospheres Deep\, the “Gallery on the Go” art kits will contain paintable ocean-themed postcards with Spira algae pigment to be used for the watercolor painting activity. The activity encourages people to think creatively about the use of ocean byproducts and sustainable artistic materials.  \nAtmospheres Deep is generously sponsored by Barbara Renshaw with additional support from Hotel SLO\, Pacific Western Bank and PG&E.   \nSLOMA will also be hosting Objectifying\, an exhibition featuring the sculptures of Elisa Ortega Montilla\, beginning May 29 through June 27\, 2021. Montilla’s work explores the objectification of women’s bodies and mixes fine woodworking with repurposed textiles\, mostly women’s undergarments. These mixed-media sculptures focus on three fundamental parts of who she is: her experience of being a woman and her feminist values; her feelings of acculturation from living in the US while maintaining her Spanish identity; and her opposition to consumerism and commitment to environmental sustainability. In conjunction with this exhibition\, Montilla will be giving an artist talk discussing her practices and the role of feminism in contemporary art via Instagram Live on Wednesday\, June 2 from 6–6:30 PM PST. Viewers can access the conversation at @SLOMuseumOfArt.

SUMMARY:Woods Humane Society ‘Oz’ Themed Virtual Fundraiser - There’s No Place Like SLOme
DESCRIPTION:Woods Humane Society Announces ‘Oz’ Themed Virtual Fundraiser \n‘There’s No Place Like SLOme’ Live Auction and Behind-the-Scenes Event Set for June 12\, 2021 \nTickets are now available for Woods Humane Society’s June 12th virtual fundraising event and live auction\, There’s No Place Like SLOme. The Wizard of Oz-themed event\, scheduled for 5 p.m.\, will feature a raffle and live auction in addition to special\, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the shelter’s dogs and cats\, and of their proverbial journey down the “yellow brick road” through Woods Humane Society\, and on to their adoptive homes. \n“This event will be unlike anything Woods Humane Society has ever hosted\,” says Woods CEO and SLOme “Wizard” of Ceremonies\, Neil Trent. “The unparalleled circumstances of the pandemic have\, sadly\, made our annual in-person gala event impossible\, but they have also inspired this one-of-a-kind opportunity for our community and supporters to join us from the comfort of their homes\, with their pets\, to see for themselves the dogs and cats in our shelter and aspects of our animal rescue efforts that they would not otherwise see.” \nThe event\, sponsored by lead sponsor Saint Francis Capital Wealth Management as well as Mechanics Bank\, Adamski Moroski Madden Cumberland & Green LLP\, Lance Parker Wealth Management\, Corvus Wealth Advisors\, Walsh Engineering\, Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic\, Elemental Wealth Advisors\, New Times SLO\, and KSBY\, will feature a short\, Oz-themed original film\, with a Woods-alumnus dog\, playing “Toto\,” followed by live cameos by Woods staff and animals. In solidarity with San Luis Obispo businesses affected by the pandemic\, the evening’s raffle and live auction will highlight local\, SLO County services and goods. \n“Toto’s Adventure” general admission tickets to the event ($25 each) include a raffle ticket\, while a limited number of VIP “We’re Off to See the Wizard” tickets ($150) include a Dorothy’s Basket of themed and locally-sourced event goodies. \n“All proceeds from this critical fundraising event will go toward helping the more than 3\,000 animals that Woods Humane Society cares for each year\,” Trent says\, explaining that\, as a nonprofit dog and cat adoption center\, Woods Humane Society is supported solely by donations\, grants\, bequests\, fundraising events and fees for services. “Without the abiding support of our community\, which has sustained us even during the challenges and unknowns of the last year\, we could not continue our mission to provide animals in need with the excellent care they deserve or bring them hope for a brighter future in a forever home.” \nWoods Humane Society spends an average of $800 per animal to provide industry-leading shelter\, veterinary care\, training\, and adoption services at its facilities in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero. Working closely with overcrowded partner shelters across the state\, and with individuals who are no longer able to care for their pets\, the organization has helped more than 1\,900 animals so far in 2021 alone. As part of its commitment to managing homeless pet populations\, its medical team also performs 4\,000 spay/neuter surgeries each year\, for animals in their care as well as for partner rescue organizations and for publicly owned pets. \nTo watch the There’s No Place Like Home event trailer\, learn more about the event\, buy tickets\, or donate\, visit www.WoodsHumane.org/SLOME.
