SUMMARY:"I'd Tell You If I Could"
DESCRIPTION:Now on view: “I’d Tell You If I Could” features paintings by U.K-based artist William Brickel. \nThe figures in William Brickel’s work presented in this exhibition are partly representations of himself\, but are also standalone actors that perform emotional distress for us to see. Each figure is absorbed in their two-dimensional world\, as the viewer is aware of their emotional intensity. Both intimately personal and emotionally closed off\, Brickel projects his face onto his subject matter. For Brickel\, these scenes are representations of his lived experience and each canvas is a window into a relatable state of vulnerability. This exhibition will be on display until February 5\, 2022.

SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents | Marrin Lee Martinez: Touchy Touchy
DESCRIPTION:The objects on display in this exhibition are a collection of kinetic creatures that explore a mother’s physical sensitivity to their child’s constant touch. Visitors are invited to interact with the forms\, as suggested by adjacent action words. This action is a symbolic provoking of “The Mother\,” who in turn reacts dramatically\, becoming a spectacle for others to witness. Created by artist Marrin Lee Martinez\, each work embodies her feelings in Motherhood; an experience that is both chaotic and magical. She references frenetic energy with bright colors – both attractive and mysterious – giving visuals to some of the most complex emotions a parent feels when caring for their child. Do you dare climb\, poke\, spin\, push\, or tug? If you do\, please be gentle. We wouldn’t want Mom to freak out! \nAbout the Artist\nMarrin Lee Martinez (b. 1989) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working on California’s Central Coast. Through her creative work and community engagement\, she is an advocate for maternal mental health. In Motherhood\, Marrin has found rhythm in the visual arts. Her work has been shown at several cause-driven events\, including Phase One Foundation’s Art vs. Cancer at Various Small Fires in Los Angeles. Marrin earned her Undergraduate Degree from Emerson College\, followed by a vibrant career in the Performing Arts. Notably\, she has performed at LACMA’s Bing Theatre\, internationally with The Walt Disney Company\, and taught dance at private studios all over Southern California. \n\nThe Museum of Art is open from 11 AM to 5 PM\, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Virtual Town Hall | Get The Facts About COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Answering Your COVID-19 Questions: COVID TOWN HALL sponsored by San Luis Obispo County Office of Education\, San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department and NAACP San Luis Obispo County Branch.  \nOverwhelmed by the amount of COVID-19 information and misinformation and constantly changing recommendations about how to stay safe? The SLO County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) wants to help. It is offering an online COVID-19 Town Hall on February 1\, 2022\, 7 – 8 p.m. to provide the latest medical answers to critical COVID-19 questions. You can submit written questions when you sign up and during the town hall. Simultaneous interpretation for Spanish speakers will be available. \nHear from trusted local medical professionals on variants\, boosters\, vaccines and how to protect yourself and your family. Panelists include Dr. Kevin Ferguson\, Dr. Miriam Lomelino\, and Dr. Renee Bravo. Dr. Ferguson said “The New Year has brought new challenges. This town hall will offer the opportunity to talk about changes in current testing and treatment strategies”. \nPotential COVID Town Hall topics include pediatric vaccine issues\, reducing Omicron spread\, vaccination effectiveness at preventing serious COVID-19\, and the safety of vaccines. \nThis town hall is one of the outreach activities being offered by the NAACP SLO County Branch as part of their effort to educate and bring awareness to the community. This event is partially funded by a grant from California Hawaii State Conference of the NAACP. The grant’s goal is to increase vaccination uptake\, particularly for our communities hardest hit by COVID-19. The focus is on reaching people who are the least likely to have access to vaccines services\, health care\, or who have high rates of vaccine hesitancy. \nOther activities funded by this grant include partnering with the Public Health Department to offer COVID-19 vaccines at a mobile clinic in Paso Robles in November\, 2021\, as well as promoting vaccination and disseminating COVID-19 information via digital infographics\, bus signage\, and billboards. \n“The grant is timely because nationwide\, there have been lower vaccination rates but higher hospitalization and death rates for Black and Latino compared to white and Asian-American communities”\, said NAACP SLO County President Stephen Vines. “We are trying to change that.” \nHesitancy to vaccinate among the Black community is partly due to a mistrust of the medical establishment. Increased hospitalization and death rates across the country also may be influenced by substandard medical care that too often occurs for Black individuals. President Vines says\, “Our grant activities help move us towards NAACP’s vision of a society in which all individuals have equal rights\, and there is no racial hatred or racial discrimination.” \nFor more information from NAACP SLO County Branch\, see https://naacpslocty.org; Facebook: NAACPSLO or contact \nSan Luis Obispo County Public Health Department at SLOPublicHealth.org/Covid19.
