SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents | Marrin Lee Martinez: Touchy Touchy
DESCRIPTION:The objects on display in this exhibition are a collection of kinetic creatures that explore a mother’s physical sensitivity to their child’s constant touch. Visitors are invited to interact with the forms\, as suggested by adjacent action words. This action is a symbolic provoking of “The Mother\,” who in turn reacts dramatically\, becoming a spectacle for others to witness. Created by artist Marrin Lee Martinez\, each work embodies her feelings in Motherhood; an experience that is both chaotic and magical. She references frenetic energy with bright colors – both attractive and mysterious – giving visuals to some of the most complex emotions a parent feels when caring for their child. Do you dare climb\, poke\, spin\, push\, or tug? If you do\, please be gentle. We wouldn’t want Mom to freak out! \nAbout the Artist\nMarrin Lee Martinez (b. 1989) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working on California’s Central Coast. Through her creative work and community engagement\, she is an advocate for maternal mental health. In Motherhood\, Marrin has found rhythm in the visual arts. Her work has been shown at several cause-driven events\, including Phase One Foundation’s Art vs. Cancer at Various Small Fires in Los Angeles. Marrin earned her Undergraduate Degree from Emerson College\, followed by a vibrant career in the Performing Arts. Notably\, she has performed at LACMA’s Bing Theatre\, internationally with The Walt Disney Company\, and taught dance at private studios all over Southern California. \n\nThe Museum of Art is open from 11 AM to 5 PM\, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents | Faig Ahmed: Collision
DESCRIPTION:The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of prolific contemporary artist Faig Ahmed. \nFrom his studio in Baku\, Azerbaijan\, Ahmed creates textile works that transcend and transform the history of carpet making in the region. Ahmed is interested in how the contemporary and the traditional collide to create something new that defies genres\, borders\, and even history. Ahmed and his weaving collaborators infuse new breath into the carpet-making practice\, turning his textiles into a rich meeting ground between the new and the old\, the common and the holy\, the rich and the ordinary. \nWorking in collaboration with Nina Levent\, Director of Sapar Contemporary\, the Museum is organizing an exhibition of works that spans Ahmed’s career — while focusing on works primarily made within the past five years — 2016 to 2021. Presenting this work for the first time on the Central Coast of California offers the arts community a unique opportunity to engage meaningfully with a practice and a body of work that has never been exhibited in this region. Complementary programming with local school districts\, guided docent tours\, and a lecture program will accompany the exhibition. The works in this exhibition are loaned from major collections from all over the world. \nAbout the Artist\nFaig Ahmed is a multimedia artist working with textiles\, painting\, video\, and installation. Ahmed is best known for his conceptual works that deconstruct and rearrange fragments of traditional Azerbaijani rugs to create contemporary sculptural forms. His work reimagines ancient crafts and creates new visual languages by disassembling traditional works and stereotypes. Born in Sumqayit\, Azerbaijan\, in 1982 Faig Ahmed went on to graduate from the Sculpture Faculty at the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Art in Baku in 2004. He represented Azerbaijan in nation’s inaugural pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and participated in the 2013\, “Love Me\, Love Me Not” event. In 2013\, he was nominated for the third edition of the Jameel Prize organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. He now lives and works in Baku\, Azerbaijan.

SUMMARY:Surfing For Hope hosts SLO Cal Open
DESCRIPTION:Four day surf contest at the Rock in Morro Bay \nWhen Surfing For Hope hosts a World Surf League Qualifying Series surf contest\, young California athletes are able to compete at the most important and recognizable events in their sport without having to leave the state or travel great distances. This also includes the ability to earn valuable WSL Qualifying Series points\, compete against international athletes\, and gain valuable competition experience.  We believe that several annual WSL Qualifying Series events are needed for California’s young athletes to maintain the same level of performance taking place around the world in other surfing regions.  Being able to compete in multiple events per year in California builds an athlete’s self-esteem and skill levels while remaining affordable as a local sport where they can drive to each event. \n

DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly to Host 20th Change the Status Quo Conference Feb. 26 \nHoda Katebi Will Deliver Keynote Speech at Annual Social Justice Leadership Event \n  \nIranian-American writer\, abolitionist organizer\, and creative educator Hoda Katebi will serve as this year’s keynote speaker to kick off Cal Poly’s 20th annual Change the Status Quo (CSQ) Social Justice Leadership Conference on Saturday\, Feb. 26. \nHosted by the university’s Center for Service in Action\, the annual conference aims to empower attendees to use Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing spirit to challenge social norms\, ask critical questions\, demand solutions and make lasting social change. The event is open to all college and high school students and the general public. \n“We are delighted to have Hoda Katebi joining us as our keynote speaker\,” said Bradley Kyker\, senior coordinator for the Center for Service in Action. “As a young activist\, we believe she will be very relatable and inspiring to our students as they explore how they can take ownership of their role in affecting social change.” \nKatebi is a founding member of Blue Tin Production\, an apparel manufacturing workers co-operative run by working class women of color that is setting new international standards in labor and sustainability within fashion supply chains. A celebrated author whose writing has appeared in Newsweek\, The Washington Post\, and the Columbia Journalism Review\, among other publications\, Katebi penned “Tehran Streetstyle” in 2016. She is also a contributing writer to the book “I Refuse to Condemn: Resisting Racism in Times of National Security.” \nIn addition\, Katebi is the host of #BecauseWeveRead\, a radical digital book club and discussion series mobilizing local communities. The club consists of more than 25 chapters globally.  \nThe conference will also feature a mix of 30-minute presentations and 60-minute interactive workshops focused on racial justice and allyship; service\, leadership and social justice; intersectionality; socio-economic justice; gender and sexuality; environmental justice; and Jewish culture and antisemitism.  \n  \nTickets purchased prior to Feb. 18 to the CSQ Social Justice Leadership Conference are $10 for Cal Poly students and AmeriCorps Fellows and $30 for the general public.
