SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents | In The Moment
DESCRIPTION:The paintings on display in this exhibition all represent specific moments that at first glance may appear mundane but in actuality reflect profound realities of the artists’ lives. Rooted in the unique specificity of each artist’s story\, these works depict the value found in the simple moments of our lives\, an invitation to create and contemplate\, and a reminder to be present in moments that you might otherwise pass by. \n\n\n\n\nImage credit: Jamie Dietze\, Sleep Now\, Little One(s)\, 2013\, oil on canvas (detail). SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents | Faig Ahmed: Collision
DESCRIPTION:The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of prolific contemporary artist Faig Ahmed. \nFrom his studio in Baku\, Azerbaijan\, Ahmed creates textile works that transcend and transform the history of carpet making in the region. Ahmed is interested in how the contemporary and the traditional collide to create something new that defies genres\, borders\, and even history. Ahmed and his weaving collaborators infuse new breath into the carpet-making practice\, turning his textiles into a rich meeting ground between the new and the old\, the common and the holy\, the rich and the ordinary. \nWorking in collaboration with Nina Levent\, Director of Sapar Contemporary\, the Museum is organizing an exhibition of works that spans Ahmed’s career — while focusing on works primarily made within the past five years — 2016 to 2021. Presenting this work for the first time on the Central Coast of California offers the arts community a unique opportunity to engage meaningfully with a practice and a body of work that has never been exhibited in this region. Complementary programming with local school districts\, guided docent tours\, and a lecture program will accompany the exhibition. The works in this exhibition are loaned from major collections from all over the world. \nAbout the Artist\nFaig Ahmed is a multimedia artist working with textiles\, painting\, video\, and installation. Ahmed is best known for his conceptual works that deconstruct and rearrange fragments of traditional Azerbaijani rugs to create contemporary sculptural forms. His work reimagines ancient crafts and creates new visual languages by disassembling traditional works and stereotypes. Born in Sumqayit\, Azerbaijan\, in 1982 Faig Ahmed went on to graduate from the Sculpture Faculty at the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Art in Baku in 2004. He represented Azerbaijan in nation’s inaugural pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and participated in the 2013\, “Love Me\, Love Me Not” event. In 2013\, he was nominated for the third edition of the Jameel Prize organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. He now lives and works in Baku\, Azerbaijan.

SUMMARY:Speckled Planter Workshop at Next Door with Night Owl Pottery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a beginner Speckled Planter Workshop at Next Door with Night Owl Pottery!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin us for Speckled Planter Workshop at Next Door at Granada Hotel and Bistro! You will learn how to make a Speckled Planter using the slab construction method while sipping on a glass or two of wine! Adriana Lemus and Chad Franco from Night Owl Pottery will guide you through this 2-hour intro to clay workshop. ***7 spaces available*** \nThe $80 fee includes speckled stoneware clay\, all materials to use during the workshop\, instruction by experienced ceramic artists\, and a glass of wine(for 21+)! Once your planter is created\, you will leave it with the instructors where they will take it back to their studio in San Luis Obispo to be fired\, glazed (painted)\, and fired a second time. This process takes about 4-5 weeks. When complete\, the planters will be brought back to Next Door to be picked up! \nNight Owl Pottery is a combination and collaboration of ceramic work by artist Adriana Lemus and natural builder Chad Franco. They create almost all of their pottery at night—thus\, Night Owl Pottery. Both artists are from the Central Coast and come from artist families. Adriana Lemus studied art at UC Berkeley and has been showing her work on the Central Coast and in the Bay area for the past five years. Chad Franco studied natural building and permaculture design in Santa Cruz\, Texas\, and Portugal\, this led to organizing his own workshops and commission work within the community. Both artists sell their work at local Makers Markets\, online\, and are currently working on commission work for restaurants\, hotels\, spas\, and homes. \nGranada Hotel and Bistro is a historic 17 room boutique hotel in Downtown San Luis Obispo. Granada is conveniently located within walking distance of downtown shops and restaurants\, Cerro San Luis Obispo Mountain\, and San Luis Obispo wine country. The workshop will be located “next door” to the bistro. Food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the workshop. \nDue to limited seating\, we have a strict 24-hour cancellation policy to reschedule or receive a refund. This will allow us to offer your spot to another guest. However\, if you are sick or experiencing any flu like symptoms\, we ask that you stay home and reschedule for a future workshop. Thank you for understanding. \n***Ages 16 and up to attend\, 21 and over to drink! VENMO OR CASH ACCEPTED***
