SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents: For the Sake of Keeping
DESCRIPTION:For the Sake of Keeping is an exhibition of contemporary fine craft artworks created in the spirit of remembrance and commemoration. It will be on display at the SLO Museum of Art from June 3rd – August 1st\, 2022. \n“As a curator who frequently visits artists’ studios\, I find that many are in their homes where their most precious possessions are also on display. Their spaces are often filled with work by fellow artists\, trinkets\, or common objects that have been transformed into keepsakes. Occasionally\, artists even hang on their own walls work they created that was never meant for public viewing\, but rather an intimate reflection of their own personal practice. The visits and conversations that occur around these objects allow for deeper insights into the artist’s identity and the world they create for themselves. \nDuring my time visiting the studios of members of the Central Coast Craftmakers\, I have become more and more curious about the personal nature of craftmaking and the objects’ intimate and relatable origins. The artworks on display in this exhibition were all selected because of the story or intention they hold for the artist\, and the living attempt to preserve their own most precious memories. Many pieces even left the interior walls of the artist’s or loved ones’ homes to be displayed here at the Museum. Some were meant to be gifted to children\, some meant to commemorate a moment\, some even meant to house cremated ashes — what connects all these works together is the unmistakable intention to remember.” \nThis exhibition is hosted in partnership with the Central Coast Craftmakers. \nWritten by Courtney Davis\, Curator of For the Sake of Keeping

SUMMARY:Central Coast Gilbert and Sullivan Presents: Ruddigore\, or The Witch’s Curse
DESCRIPTION:Central Coast Gilbert & Sullivan Presents: Ruddigore\, or The Witch’s Curse \n\nJoin us for Gilbert and Sullivan’s wonderful 10th opera “Ruddigore\, or The Witch’s Curse.” You will love this hysterical take on a classic melodrama\, complete with a sweet maiden\, a bad baronet\, a chorus of professional bridesmaids…and even some ghosts! Don’t miss your chance to see a fully staged production of this rarely performed work with a live professional orchestra. \nSee website for more details and to purchase tickets. \n\n\n“Ruddigore\, or The Witch’s Curse” was the 10th collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan. The “supernatural opera” opened on January 21\, 1887 at the Savoy Theatre and ran for 288 performances. It was not revived until 1920 when it was substantially cut and provided with a new overture arranged by Geoffrey Toye. \nThe opera is a parody of the stock melodrama — the villain who carries off the maiden; the priggishly good-mannered poor-but-virtuous-heroine; the hero in disguise\, and his faithful old retainer who dreams of their former glory days; the snake in the grass who claims to be following his heart; the wild\, mad girl; the swagger of fire-eating patriotism; ghosts coming to life to enforce a curse; and so forth. But as one critic noted\, Gilbert turns the moral absolutes of melodrama upside down: Good becomes bad\, bad becomes good\, and heroes take the easy way out. \nThe Baronets of Ruddigore are cursed. Anyone who succeeds to the title has to commit a crime every day — or perish in inconceivable agony. \nRobin Oakapple\, a young farmer loves Rose Maybud\, but both are too shy to tell the other. But Robin has a secret. He is really Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd\, the rightful Baronet of Ruddigore\, in disguise. His younger brother\, Despard\, believing Ruthven to be dead\, has assumed the title. Robin’s foster brother\, Richard\, seeking Rose for himself\, tells Despard of Robin’s deception\, and Robin is forced to accept his true position\, losing Rose to Richard in the process. \nNow the Baronet of Ruddigore\, Robin is confronted by the he ghosts of his ancestors who step from their picture frames in the gallery of Ruddigore Castle to confront him for failing to conscientiously commit his daily crime. Robin eventually finds a way of satisfying his ancestors demands whilst continuing to live a blameless life…
