SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents: For the Sake of Keeping
DESCRIPTION:For the Sake of Keeping is an exhibition of contemporary fine craft artworks created in the spirit of remembrance and commemoration. It will be on display at the SLO Museum of Art from June 3rd – August 1st\, 2022. \n“As a curator who frequently visits artists’ studios\, I find that many are in their homes where their most precious possessions are also on display. Their spaces are often filled with work by fellow artists\, trinkets\, or common objects that have been transformed into keepsakes. Occasionally\, artists even hang on their own walls work they created that was never meant for public viewing\, but rather an intimate reflection of their own personal practice. The visits and conversations that occur around these objects allow for deeper insights into the artist’s identity and the world they create for themselves. \nDuring my time visiting the studios of members of the Central Coast Craftmakers\, I have become more and more curious about the personal nature of craftmaking and the objects’ intimate and relatable origins. The artworks on display in this exhibition were all selected because of the story or intention they hold for the artist\, and the living attempt to preserve their own most precious memories. Many pieces even left the interior walls of the artist’s or loved ones’ homes to be displayed here at the Museum. Some were meant to be gifted to children\, some meant to commemorate a moment\, some even meant to house cremated ashes — what connects all these works together is the unmistakable intention to remember.” \nThis exhibition is hosted in partnership with the Central Coast Craftmakers. \nWritten by Courtney Davis\, Curator of For the Sake of Keeping

SUMMARY:7:30 AM | Good Morning SLO - July 2022
DESCRIPTION:Your community newspaper brought to life. \nGood Morning SLO is our platform for sharing ideas\, news and inspiration. A monthly program that brings community leaders\, business owners\, nonprofit executives and staffers together\, and enables us to reconnect\, engage and learn from each other. \nOur goal is to provide insight into business\, community and legislative issues and share the stories of those making a difference. We want audience members to leave with ideas and information about how to better their personal and professional lives. \nGood Morning SLO happens on the fourth Thursday of every month except November when it is on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. \nThank you to this month’s featured sponsor: \n \n\nA LEGAL SYSTEM FROM THE MIDDLE AGES \nGrand Juries\, a system that dates back to the Middle Ages\, are now only employed by two countries: Liberia and the U.S. They are one of the least understood and most powerful tools in the civil and criminal legal systems\, and we’ve asked SLO Superior Court Judge Craig van Rooyen to talk about how the system is used today. \n\n \nCENTRAL MEXICO VIA MORRO BAY \nMaintaining a line to her roots in central Mexico through delicious food is fundamental to Morro Bay-based food blogger Silvia Martinez\, whose warmth and authenticity earned her a role on PBS’s Great American Recipe. Join us to learn from her business leadership as one of the few bilingual bloggers in the U.S. \n\n \nECONOMIC IMPACT OF WAR \nWhile the human toll of Russia’s war with Ukraine is staggering\, the economic impacts will also be significant. Dr. Katya Vasilaky\, Cal Poly Economics Professor with Ukrainian roots\, will shed light on her role in Economists for Ukraine and impacts of the war on the global economy. \n\nBUILDING WITH OUR VALUES IN MIND \nWhat does it look like when a community prioritizes inclusivity? We’ve invited Anyeley Hallová\, founder of equity-centered real estate development company Adre\, to share about her experience delivering equity-centered projects and how we can be pro-business\, pro-environment and push for social justice all at the same time. \n\nAN UPDATE ON HOMELESSNESS \nEvery two years\, communities across the country conduct counts of individuals experiencing homelessness\, and SLO County’s 2022 numbers were just released. We’ve invited Susan Funk\, Atascadero Councilmember and Chair of the County Homeless Services Oversight Committee\, to talk about the count and how we will utilize the new data. \n\nCARING FOR THOSE THAT CARE FOR US \nIn the midst of a mental health crisis among firefighter ranks and wildfires of sizes and scales never seen before\, we have a responsibility to listen\, learn and step up to provide better support to first responders. SLO City Fire Captain John MacDonald will share his perspective and how care is being provided on the Central Coast. \n\nHAKEEM SANUSI OF SILK OCEAN \nWe’ve invited Hakeem Sanusi\, founder and vocalist of Silk Ocean and winner of a New Times Music Award\, to serenade us with pieces inspired from modern hip hop\, rock and classic funk\, seamlessly blending the old and new to facilitate a fresh listening experience. \n\nThank you to our 2022 Good Morning SLO Annual Sponsors:\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Festival Mozaic Presents Kaitlyn Smith at SLO Brew Rock
DESCRIPTION:Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is an American composer\, performer and producer\, originally from Orcas Island and currently based in Los Angeles. After several self-released albums\, Smith was signed to independent record label Western Vinyl in 2015\, who released her first official album\, Euclid\, in January 2015. Her latest album\, Tides: Music for the Meditation and Yoga\, was released in January 2019.\n\nSmith grew up and was home-educated on Orcas Island\, Northwestern Washington. She left the island to study composition and sound engineering at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, before returning to the island after her graduation. It was after returning home that Smith discovered synthesizers\, when a neighbor introduced her to the Buchla 100 Synthesizer. Having originally intended to use her voice as her primary instrument\, and then moving to classical guitar and piano\, Smith switched to the use of synthesizer after being lent and experimenting with the Buchla 100 for a year.\n\nSmith formed indie-folk band Ever Isles whilst still at Berklee but left the project after discovering the Buchla 100\, explaining\, “I got so distracted and enamored with the process of making sounds with [the Buchla’s potential] that I abandoned the next Ever Isles album”. When developing her composition skills\, Smith used visual aid as inspiration for her music. She has said that she is always composing to a visual in her head\, explaining\, “Sometimes I let the sound create the image for me and then I build off that. Or vice versa: I come up with imagery that is inspiring to me\, or I see something that is inspiring\, and then create sounds that I feel match it”.
