SUMMARY:Alyssa Monks: Be Perfectly Still\, A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:The SLO Museum of Art is pleased to present the first museum retrospective by contemporary artist Alyssa Monks. The exhibition will bring together paintings that span the arc of Monks’ career\, from the early 2000’s to works created during the pandemic. Through paintings that are expressive\, lush\, and often intimate\, Monks conveys the very essence of being human through works that meditate on love\, loss\, and the perennial search for self. \nThe paintings included in this exhibition feature large-scale portraits of Monks and those closest to her\, portrayed in vulnerable or intimate contexts. Often capturing fragmented elements of a scene\, or layering together various spaces and moments\, Monks’ works disorient the viewer and invite reflection on one’s own vulnerability. Through the use of thickly applied brushstrokes\, and her tendency to flip the background and foreground in her work using semi-transparent filters of glass\, vinyl\, steam\, water and or foliage over shallow spaces\, Monks creates surface tension in her work that eschews easy interpretation of her subject matter. \nThis exhibit is showing from August 27th – November 13th at the SLO Museum of Art. See SLOMA website for more details.

SUMMARY:SLO Repertory Theatre Presents: RED
DESCRIPTION:Red takes us into the mind of abstract expressionist artist Mark Rothko. \nWinner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play\, Red takes us into the mind of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko\, for whom paintings are “pulsating” life forces and art is intended to stop the heart. Red chronicles the tormented painter’s two-year struggle to complete a lucrative set of murals for Manhattan’s exclusive Four Seasons restaurant\, and his fraught relationship with a seemingly naïve young assistant\, who must choose between appeasing his mentor—and changing the course of art history. \nSLO Rep Theatre is going to be showing Red by John Logan from October 14th until October 30th. Show times will be Thursdays – Saturdays @ 7PM and Saturdays – Sundays @ 2PM. See the website for details and to buy tickets online.

SUMMARY:7:30 AM | Good Morning SLO - October 2022
DESCRIPTION:Your community newspaper brought to life. \nGood Morning SLO is our platform for sharing ideas\, news and inspiration. A monthly program that brings community leaders\, business owners\, nonprofit executives and staffers together\, and enables us to reconnect\, engage and learn from each other. \nOur goal is to provide insight into business\, community and legislative issues and share the stories of those making a difference. We want audience members to leave with ideas and information about how to better their personal and professional lives. \nGood Morning SLO happens on the fourth Thursday of every month except November when it is on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. \nThank you to this month’s featured sponsor: \n \n\nPRECISION GROWTH \nWhile it’s not unusual to see a local company on the Inc. 5000\, recognition as the fastest-growing construction business in California is an exceptional achievement. Erik Wright\, Principal at Precision Construction Services\, will share a sneak peek into their unique approach and some of the game changing projects that they have undertaken. \n\nGOVERNING CANNABIS \nSix years ago voters legalized cannabis use for adults in California. Since then\, jurisdictions have been working to create rules to manage this budding industry. Matt Bronson\, Grover Beach City Manager\, will join us to talk about how Grover has managed cannabis\, leading to growth in the industry and investment in the community. \n\nBRIDGE TO A NEW LIFE \nFor those who have been through the justice system\, reintegrating into society can be difficult. Restorative Partners has launched a new project\, the Bridge Cafe\, to help formerly incarcerated people learn new skills and jumpstart community connections. Sister Theresa Harpin and Eric Blanco will share more about this endeavor. \n\nLEADING SLO’S RESPONSE \nThe mental health crisis facing our community continues to present challenges. The City of SLO has launched a Mobile Crisis Unit that will assist with mental health and behavioral crisis intervention. Keith Aggson\, Fire Chief for the City of SLO\, will fill us in on how the first months have gone and introduce the person doing this crucial work. \n\nDIABLO CONTINUES ON? \nCalifornia recently passed legislation that could extend the life of Diablo Canyon in order to preserve the state’s grid reliability. There are still hurdles to clear before that becomes a reality. The PG&E team will be at Good Morning SLO to talk to us about what will be taking place over the coming months. \n\nMUSTANG MARCHING BAND \nWe’ll finish our morning off on an exciting note with a performance from the Cal Poly Marching Band. The 210-member strong Pride of the Pacific Mustang Marching Band is an organization of Cal Poly students who perform at sports games and special functions throughout the year. \n\nThank you to our 2022 Good Morning SLO Annual Sponsors:

SUMMARY:SLO Friends of the Library Presents: Book Sale
DESCRIPTION:Book Sale\nWe’re happy to announce our next book sale\, to be held in the Community Room adjacent to the Library\, October 27-30. Thursday and Friday hours are 10 am to 6 pm\, and Friday and Saturday hours are 10 am to 5 pm. \nPricing has been rolled back to the old $1 per inch of stacked books\, and $1 each for DVDs and CDs.  All day Sunday books will be $5 a bag. \nCome and select from a rich selection of books\, including fiction\, non-fiction and Children’s\, plus a selection of unusual books specially priced. \nTraditionally SLOFOL held an annual book sale in March\, but we are moving toward holding more frequent smaller sales. As always they feature a wide selection of adult\, children’s and teen books\, as well as DVDs and audio books. Books are typically priced by the inch\, when stacked\, and DVDs and CDs by the box. \nTo see the Tribune’s video of preparation for a past book sale\, click here. \nTo watch the excitement of opening night at a book sale\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Sale History\nThe first Book Sale was organized in March 1979 by Marjorie Johnson who was then the Assistant Library Director and was held in the lower floor of the Veterans Memorial Building\, now home to the Veterans Museum. Since the room size limited patrons to 250 at a time\, there were lines of patrons waiting for a chance to buy books at a price of 15 cents per inch. The first sale netted over $1700\, and the success of that sale resulted in a move to the main hall in the Vets Building. \nIn preparation for the Sale\, Marjorie secured space in a large warehouse on Kansas Avenue – formerly the laundry for Camp San Luis Obispo. For over 25 years Marjorie and her husband Richard led a team of volunteers who sorted and boxed books for the Sale. Many years later\, volunteers still meet regularly to sort and box books. \nOver the years Friends of the Library book sales have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Library. \nThe key to success of the book sale is the work of our volunteers. In addition to those working at the warehouse\, dozens of volunteers turn out for the Sale itself. It’s a joyful event\, and both volunteers and customers return year after year. \nIf you would like to volunteer for the Sale or if you would like to donate books for the Sale\, please contact us using the appropriate email contact form. \n\nLocation: 995 Palm St\, San Luis Obispo\, CA 93403
