SUMMARY:SLO Museum of Art Presents: Home/Work
DESCRIPTION:Home/Work presents the work of fourteen contemporary artists whose work together questions our collective experiences of home. The works gathered in this exhibition reflect on the unique and intimate experiences of the artists who made them — and invite us to consider how we achieve balance in our busy lives of making home and making work. Not designed to be exhaustive\, this show invites the public to consider their own experiences\, reflecting on the overlap of home and work\, and all that is in between. Including new works by emerging artists\, and recontextualized works by world-renowned leading feminist artists\, this exhibition asks the timely question: what does home mean to you? \nParticipating artists include: Brandy Eve Allen\, Zalika Azim\, Kate Barbee\, Phoebe Boswell\, Andrea Bowers\, Allana Clarke\, Geoffrey Chadsey\, Judy Chicago\, Mary Kelly\, Emmett Moore\, Sophia Narrett\, Woody de Othello\, Greg Scott\, and Chiffon Thomas.

SUMMARY:New Exhibition At SLOMA: Dirty Laundry
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nDetails\nThe average American throws away 70 pounds of clothing every year. This constant demand for clothing has given way to the expansion of the “Fast Fashion” industry\, a manufacturing model in which clothes are designed\, fabricated\, and sold quickly to keep up with the ever-changing trends. This industry consumes one tenth of all water used industrially and approximately 20% of the wastewater created worldwide is attributed to the process of mass-producing cheap clothes. The detriments of fast fashion extend far past the degradation of the environment and to racial and gender inequality as the industry exports its production overseas to factories that employ a disproportionate number of women whom they pay meager wages. \nWhere did the problem originate? What are the consequences? Where do we go from here? These are the questions the California-based artists included in this exhibition explore through site-specific installation\, sculpture\, and print media. This exhibition not only seeks to enlighten audiences about the impacts of textile consumption\, but to offer solutions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition is supported in part by the California Arts Council\, a state agency. SUMMARY:Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center Presents: Huell Howser Memorial Nature Walk at Oso Flaco Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center along Oso Flaco Lake’s 2½ mile boardwalk to the Pacific Ocean and view first-hand the first blushes of spring as the native flora and fauna emerge from winter’s rest. Huell appreciated and highlighted many of California’s backroad treasures\, including Guadalupe\, Oso Flaco Lake\, and the surrounding ancient dunes in his television shows “California’s Gold” and “Visiting with Huell Howser.” The annual February walk follows the path that Huell took while filming one of his popular episodes. \nJoin hike Docent\, Ray Segovia on Saturday\, February 11th at 9am to walk the same path Huell did when he visited the dunes 18 years ago. Ray will lead hikers through Oso Flaco Lake Natural Area out to the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. Be sure to dress in layers and bring a water bottle. We also ask that you please bring closed-toed shoes so you may access parts of the beach where Huell visited. \nThe canopy and understory of willows and wax myrtles along the first part of the riparian walk support an incredible array of diverse life near the ocean. You will see lace-like Spanish moss hanging from the tree limbs and hear the migrating songbirds. There will be silver dune lupine\, coyote bush\, deer weed\, and dunes paintbrush\, along with a wide variety of reptiles and mammals. From the viewing platform at the end of the boardwalk\, the entire San Luis Bay from Point San Luis to Mussel Rock will be seen. \nHuell was a beloved man who connected deeply to many different people through his shows. He highlighted and helped conserve many off-the-beaten-path heritage sites throughout California that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.  Huell visited the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center on several occasions and served as the lead on the Dunes Center’s capital campaign early in the organization’s history and was appreciated dearly. We hope you join us in honoring his memory\, conservation\, and enjoying Oso Flaco Lake this February. \nPlease register here for docent-led hike. \nSpace is limited\, reserve your spot today.
