DESCRIPTION:Profoundly interested in the idea of hybridization (sparked from her Hapa heritage – she is ½ Japanese and ½ Caucasian)\, Solomon’s mixed media works revolve thematically around discovering her heritage\, the notion of domesticity\, craft\, feminism\, and the pursuit of art as science/research. \nShe is obsessed with color and color theory and is drawn to found objects\, tending to alter them conceptually so that their meanings and original uses or intents are repurposed. She often fuses “wrong” things together – recontextualizing their original purposes\, and incorporating materials that inherently question and skirt the line between art and craft.

SUMMARY:SLOMA Vanessa Wallace-Gonzales Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Vanessa Wallace-Gonzales is a Black-Latinx and Santa Barbara\, California native artist who uses elements of mythology to explore her identity and personal experiences. She began this exploration during her attendance at the Maryland Institute College of Art and carried it on in exhibitions in Oxnard\, Ventura and Los Angeles\, California\, New York City\, Baltimore\, Maryland\, and Florence\, Italy. \nVanessa Wallace-Gonzales is attracted to mythology because it rides the line of reality and fantasy to tell the story of a people. Her passion has brought her to think of her own creation. With all the nuances that form her identity\, Vanessa has come to begin thinking of herself not just as one but a universe of beings in which the entirety is her. Her works consist of figures built from collaging transparent paper\, insects\, bugs\, flowers\, leaves while simultaneously playing with body language\, distortion\, and metaphor. In a visual language exploring the expanses of the human body and mind\, a vibrant color palette and organic materials\, Vanessa attempts to navigate the complex\, imperfect yet beautifully kaleidoscopic nature of a people and thus herself.

The programs run all year on the 1st and 3rd Saturday each month at the Addie St. beach access in beautiful Pismo Beach. \nWe encourage all Veterans\, First Responders and all those living with disabilities to join us for our bi-weekly Surf on Saturdays / VetSurf programs to share the camaraderie with like-minded brothers and sisters. Surfers and non-surfers are welcome\, enjoy coffee and snacks on the beach or paddle out to share some waves with fellow Veterans and those living with disabilities. \nAmpSurf provides all necessary surfing equipment and wetsuits for new surfers\, Certified Surf Instructors are available to teach any participants wanting to learn to surf. A beach access wheelchair is available for anyone who requires it. If you have your own gear and can surf independently\, please join us and share your love of surfing with your fellow Veterans\, First Responders\, and locally disabled. \nFREE SURFBOARDS AND WETSUITS FOR VETERANS

DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY-Award winners Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit announced today the upcoming release of their eighth album\, Weathervanes\, out June 9 via Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers. Written and produced by Isbell\, Weathervanes features 13 brand new tracks. “Death Wish\,” the debut release from the collection\, is available now. \nWeathervanes is a collection of grown-up songs: Songs about adult love\, about change\, about the danger of nostalgia and the interrogation of myths\, about cruelty and regret and redemption. Some will make you cry alone in your car and others will make you sing along with thousands of strangers in a big summer pavilion\, united in the great miracle of being alive. Isbell is a storyteller at the peak of his craft\, observing his fellow wanderers\, looking inside and trying to understand\, reducing a universe to four minutes. \n“There is something about boundaries on this record\,” said Isbell. “As you mature\, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.” \n“Death Wish” is about being in love with someone suffering from depression\, with a powerful universal undercurrent about the fragility of life and the power and limits of love. That grown-up kind of love. Musically the track is beautiful and fascinating. Now it feels complicated and intricate\, yet never fragile\, like the subject of the song itself.
