DESCRIPTION:*This is a hybrid event — attendees have the option to either attend in person or via Zoom.  \nHear from the people representing you about their priorities\, things to keep an eye on in 2022\, and how policy and politics in Sacramento impact us here on the Central Coast. \nWith the continuing impacts of the pandemic\, a spate of recently approved bills\, and a record-setting budget\, California’s political landscape is more interesting — and more relevant — than ever.\n\nWe have invited our representatives Senator John Laird and Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham to give us a behind-the-scenes look into how it’s all playing out\, how the Central Coast will be impacted\, and to share the story of the politics around policy at the state level.\n\n\n\nFEATURING:\n\n \n\nSenator John Laird \nJohn Laird was was sworn in to represent Senate District 17 on December 7\, 2020. Prior to his Senate service\, Laird served in multiple roles including as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency\, in the State Assembly\, and as the mayor of Santa Cruz. The son of teachers and raised in Vallejo\, Laird graduated with honors in politics from the University of California Santa Cruz in 1972. Cunningham is a former prosecutor and a local businessman and attorney. Born and raised on the Central Coast\, he graduated with honors from Point Loma Nazarene University before attending law school at UC Berkeley. Together\, he and his wife Shauna run a family business and raise their four children on the Central Coast. He has volunteered with international organizations that are dedicated to improving the lives of marginalized groups and has collaborated on projects with United Nations University\, the White House\, and the International Federation of the Red Cross. His focus has turned to local issues including carceral education at the jail and CMC and inequitable racial/ethnic representation in positions of SLO leadership. He is the main author of Systemic Racism and Microaggressions in San Luis County\, recently published by the Sheriff’s Department. \n  \n\nJaime Lewis writes\, speaks and podcasts about the good life in California. That typically means food\, drink\, and travel\, as seen in her multiple food columns\, her podcast CONSUMED\, and speaking engagements. Lewis also makes a point of discovering where cultural markers like food\, drink and travel are inaccessible. She presses for diversity\, inclusion\, and discovery in her work\, including the short documentary she produced with R.A.C.E.
