SUMMARY:State of the State
DESCRIPTION:Each spring the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce brings together a panel of statewide leaders to discuss numerous timely\, hot button issues during the annual State of the State event. \nThe years topics include: \nThe impact of top State fiscal initiatives \nCalifornia State Treasurer John Chiang oversees trillions of dollars in transactions every year\, and as the State’s banker he manages the financing for schools\, infrastructure and health care. Chiang will provide a status update on the state budget and unfunded pension liabilities obligations\, and will discuss the impact of the new minimum wage increase as well as some of the top fiscal initiatives. \n\nFunding roads and infrastructure amid cuts \nRetiring in March from his position as executive director of the California Transportation Commission\, Will Kempton has been credited with rebuilding Caltrans’ reputation. Kempton will speak about the State’s infrastructure needs and what is happening to address them\, and give an update on funding for those needs. He will also comment on SLO becoming a self-help county and share his perspectives on transportation policy and implementation. \n\nElection year predictions from inside the statehouse \nJohn Myers has been covering the capital for more than two decades and in 2015 became the Sacramento bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times. Myers will give his election predictions for this year and how he sees the 2018 Governor’s race playing out\, as well as provide insight into what the political climate is like amongst State legislators and touch on ballot measures affecting businesses. \n\nModerator: \nKSBY President and General Manager Kathleen Choal has been running newsrooms for 16 years. The former Arizona police officer brings decades of experience in both state and local politics and an extensive background on the issues to her role as moderator.
